Looking for inspiration for breakfast ideas for Christmas Day morning.

We have done Nigellas Christmas muffins, Delias stollen toasted

Poached eggs on muffins with homemade chilli jam, croissants with christmas jam, or just tea and lebkuchen!

What do others do?

Christmas Stollen

At Christmas time in Austria, Germany and parts of France they traditionally serve something called stollen: it is a rich fruity yeast bread filled with almond icing (marzipan) and topped with a light glace icing. If you have a number of people staying...

People who have smoked salmon for breakfast, what do you have for your starter for Christmas dinner? We normally have smoked salmon or melon for vegetarians but maybe it’s time to mix things up a bit Xmas Grin

We have home made soup - family recipe that everyone loves, luckily. It's a tradition.

I don’t do a proper Christmas dinner - I live alone, and I usually manage to fend off all the people who think it’s scandalous to be on your own on Christmas Day. I don’t do Christmas lunch at all - I chill, watch TV or box sets, or read. Ok, I may have a chocolate or two.

In the evening, I may do roast veg with all the trimmings - bread sauce, Yorkshire puds, stuffing - but no meat, because although I’m not veggie, I don’t think meat is necessary with all that lot. No starter, and home made mince pies for dessert. Or I may just have something ordinary like sausages and chips. Some years, I’ve bought loads of really nice cheeses (there’s a brilliant cheese shop close by that will sell me small quantities of lots of different ones) and had bread, cheese and wine. I really can’t see the point in tucking into 2000-3000 calories in one meal and then feeling yuk for the next 24 hours.

No starter, it will just take up space that the roast could 😂 I suppose you could see your breakfast as an early starter!

LadyHexham · 28/09/2026 09:34

We have porridge with demerara, cream and a splash of whisky 😎

Gordon Ramsey’s pea and parsnip soup is lightweight, uses up what you already have in and for some reason the kids ask for it even now they’re adults.

My gran was from the Midlands and always had a pork pie on Christmas morning. We will do that if we're hosting my family. In-laws are not keen though and prefer Panettone with a choice of jams.

BirdsSinginInTheSycamoreTrees · 28/09/2026 10:21

Thick white toast with butter and then all-butter croissants with jam if any room left (probably more cals in that one breakfast than the whole of December breakfasts put together!). When DS lived at home, it was a bacon butty on thick white for him.

Love reading all the fancy treats for breakfast and ours sounds a bit dull in comparison but rarely have white bread so it always feels like a treat in our house. So I'd say go with what feels like a special treat for you, even if it's something simple.

ToadRage · 28/09/2026 10:47

My husband has salmon and cream cheese on a muffin be usually shares his salmon with the cat. I don't like salmon. I like to sleep in and just wait for lunch.

gingercat02 · 28/09/2026 11:07

Bacon and egg rolls, champagne. Perfect

troppibambini6 · 28/09/2026 11:21

Panatone, fruit, baked in the oven pastries, homemade hot cranberry and orange with Greek yogurt and homemade granola. Buck’s Fizz, naive juices and coffee.

troppibambini6 · 28/09/2026 11:22

I stay away from the bacon/sausage thing as bil is vegan and it seems a bit off filling the house full of bacon smell.

Ineffable23 · 28/09/2026 11:32

For Christmas breakfast is usually comparatively minimal but if I was doing a major breakfast, I would probably go for:

French toast made with some sort of fruit and nut bread - this one ideally: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/312987155/?icid=ghsandapp_ghs_pdp_share

Then I would do that with crispy bacon, maple syrup, fresh fruit and for the ultimate indulgence, clotted cream. Plus some mint to garnish, and if I can be bothered some fruit coulis as well.

luckylavender · 28/09/2026 11:34

Toast, No need to fill up so early

PurpleThistle7 · 28/09/2026 11:40

I did this at my inlaws last year and it was great - it soaks overnight so I made it last thing on Christmas eve, sat it to soak overnight and popped it in the oven while we opened a first round of gifts. It lasted really well so people could have a bit whenever they wanted. Will probably make it again even though it's just my immediate family this year as it was much, much easier than pancakes.

(We made eggs and bacon eventually too as it gets a bit sweet themed on Christmas)

Smoked salmon and cream cheese croissants for DH and I
Christmas shaped crumpets with Nutella and fruit for the kids
We all have bucksfizz (lemonade and orange juice for the kids)

ShadowManCometh · 28/09/2026 12:18

No starter for us, we have Christmas lunch at 1pm prepared by my amazing sister. I would rather fill up on the roast and the incredible vegetable sides she does. We bring dessert.

Breakfast for us, a lovely marmalade on toast as well as chocolate that we have as presents that morning. We try to not to fill up too much on this because my sister goes to a lot of effort to feed us which I am so grateful for. My children are adults so no crack of dawn waking up here.

Everyone's breakfasts sound lovely. We have bagel thins with smoked salmon and cream cheese or with scrambled eggs as a lunch just after Christmas.

OnlyOneAdda · 28/09/2026 12:35

Cup of tea with stockings in my Mum’s bed (with her grown up children and almost grown teen grandchildren ☺️). Cup of coffee with the first few presents. Then on with the feasting and booze…

Smoked Salmon and cream cheese bagels but it HAS to be proper Brick Lane Biegels which I collect or get delivered to my office; and it HAS to be Inverawe long sliced smoked salmon which we only get at Christmas 🎄🎅🏻 Lemon juice + black pepper. Served with a Bucks Fizz made with our favourite Cremant we bring back from France 🇫🇷 and a giant ice cube made with clementine juice, a couple of cranberries, a slice of orange and a sprig of rosemary - slowly melts into the fizz and looks gorgeous!

Other special Christmas brunches we enjoy over the festive period are:

Kedgeree - we have this Boxing Day and NYD and is delicious but also easy on the digestion if one has overindulged the day before 🙄

Bacon and scallop buns - lightly toasted Sussex Kitchen Demi-brioche buns, spread with salted French butter; then slowly pan-fried smoked streaky bacon - decent thick stuff dry-cured from the butchers and 4-5 fat scallops pan fried in the bacon fat. Light spritz of lemon. Absolutely bangin’ and really different. Recommend these scallops: https://thewrightbrothers.co.uk/products/fresh-scallop-meat?_pos=1&_sid=e97306e5a&_ss=r

Honestly? Terry's chocolate orange!! I generally can't do a proper breakfast on Christmas Day because it spoils my lunch (and I want to be STARVING for that) but at my mum's once we had sourdough toast with pesto instead of butter, then a layer of parma ham, and a poached egg on top. It's suitably fancy for the occasion and delicious 🙂

Forgot to mention Bucks Fizz!! The most festive start to a day!

Beer3000 · 29/09/2026 23:29

I prep this the day before, and it just goes in the oven. Looks quite fancy, but is really easy.

Our mornings are busy, mass and then visiting relatives and home to make dinner , so I get M&S frozen croissants, cinnamon roles etc and leave them and some fruit salad out.

We are out for dinner christmas eve, have christmas dinner and then boxing day dinner so I don’t go mad at breakfast !

MinnieMountain · Yesterday 16:52

Another frozen pastries person.

We add pork pie and beer to that when we're with PILs for Christmas Day. It's too heavy for me and DS though.

I might make cinnamon rolls this year.

That's very Leicestershire 😁
