Christmas Stollen

At Christmas time in Austria, Germany and parts of France they traditionally serve something called stollen: it is a rich fruity yeast bread filled with almond icing (marzipan) and topped with a light glace icing. If you have a number of people staying...

Bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese usually because my mum insists on dinner by 2, can’t opt for anything heavy

Billy47 · 27/09/2026 17:41

We dk frozen pastries, fruit and juice.

mondaytosunday · 27/09/2026 17:45

DH's family always do cinnamon rolls for Christmas breakfast. I'm still learning to bake them myself but I followed this recipe with the 'overnight' instructions last year and it worked so well. I made them after the children were in bed, whipped them out of the fridge when the first child woke up and then an hour later they were ready for the oven. https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/overnight-cinnamon-rolls/

I made these one Christmas and they were wonderful. I may do them again this year. Usually we have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or croissants depending on what time we are planning to have Christmas dinner

yonem · 27/09/2026 17:50

We normally have jus-rol pains au chocolat but I was thinking about getting the Pret frozen choc hazelnut or almond croissants this year instead 😋 with buck’s fizz or a mixture of cranberry and orange juice

CoffeeChocolateWine · 27/09/2026 17:56

We do Christmas bagels! A choice between the Christmas ham and scrambled egg, or smoked salmon and scrambled egg! And a bit of avocado on the side 🥑

Epoisses · 27/09/2026 18:00

Sausage baps before a walk. Then at about 4 ( not traditional xmas dinner)

fumingrightnow1 · 27/09/2026 18:02

We have a choice of chocolate pastries babybels and fresh fruit, with a hot chocolate for kids, 😋
and for adults we toast bagels with cream cheese, and on top have smoked salmon with fresh chives and a drizzle of balsamic glaze or poached/scrambled eggs on top. With a decent coffee of course!

Then afterward we all have a go at the old selection boxes 😆 🍫 🎅

If you have oodles of time then Brittany buckwheat crepes with egg, cheese and ham (mushrooms for the vegetarians, all buckwheat flour for the gluten free, Parmesan rather than Emmental for the lactose intolerant and something else for egg allergies-sorry)

minerva7 · 27/09/2026 18:04

We usually have a selection of pastries and some fruit. Tbh when the kids were wee it didn’t matter what I made… the selection box was more tempting 😂

PaperPanama · 27/09/2026 18:28

We don't make breakfast at all on Christmas Day. Ever since the dc were little, breaklast has been whatever they find in their stocking. Christmas Day was the one time in the year that they could eat in their beds - and we could get a lie in! As adults they still like this, and so do we.

ILoveGroot · 27/09/2026 18:49

I love all these ideas! Breakfast is a main event for us as don't have a traditional Christmas lunch due to seeing relatives over lunch and having a big buffet tea.

We have hot pain au chocolate and champagne.

danglethedingle · 27/09/2026 19:08

When my kids were little I used to put a carton of juice and a cereal bar in their stockings along with the traditional satsuma in the toe. This made me feel less guilty that the rest of their breakfast was probably going to be chocolate.

Now its just DH and me we usually have scrambled egg, smoked salmon and toasted bagels with nice coffee and fresh orange juice.

Brassknucks · 27/09/2026 19:27

We like others don’t do breakfast on Xmas day because of the Christmas dinner which we have at lunch time, but if breakfast was an event I’d make french toast using a brioche with bacon (brown sugar and butter cooked) with maple syrup.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 27/09/2026 19:29

Sweet things

  • white chocolate and cranberry muffins.
  • Gingerbread and xmas spice muffins
  • Cinnamon & sugar eggy bread
  • Waffles

Savoury things -

  • Avocado and smoked salmon on muffins
  • Shakshuka is brilliant - you can make the sauce up to a week beforehand and then breakfast is really easy to prepare on the day, just get the sauce warmed up in a shallow frying pan and crack an egg into it per person (so can do 8-10 in a large pan if there's lots of people) and pop a lid on and let it simmer for 4 minutes while the eggs poach
  • deep fried mozarella sandwiches (make sandwiches and soak in beaten egg then fry - you don't actually "deep" fry them, just make sure the oil comes half way up the thickness of the sandwich so that the middle gets fried. Can also put bacon or ham or pesto in with the mozz.
DilkushaKitchen · 27/09/2026 19:35

We have croissants with scrambled egg, or smoked salmon scrambled egg if we're not having it as a starter later on, or just croissants and nice jam. We always have Bucks' Fizz though.

Sometimessmiling · 27/09/2026 19:36

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on fancy bread toasted and bucks fizz.

VivIsBlonde · 27/09/2026 19:42

As we’re going to be having a roast dinner then we don’t have anything just coffee

LoserWinner · 27/09/2026 19:47

I have smoked salmon with shredded iceberg lettuce, capers, sour cream, onions and lemon juice, and wash it down with generous quantities of champagne. But I don’t have to do any cooking or socialising afterwards :-)

Reader19 · 27/09/2026 19:54

Swedish cinnamon buns. You can make them weeks ahead; they freeze really well. Defrost overnight and heat them in the oven, and they taste freshly baked. Dan Lepard's cinnamon bun dough recipe is lovely, but I have always used a more traditional filling (I mix 75g softened butter, 75g caster sugar and 2tsp cinnamon and spread on the rolled-out rectangle of dough).

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 27/09/2026 20:58

Frozen ready to bake almond croissants and pain au chocolat, a huge pot of coffee, Velvetiser hot chocolate and a glass or two of champagne.

yonem · 27/09/2026 20:59

People who have smoked salmon for breakfast, what do you have for your starter for Christmas dinner? We normally have smoked salmon or melon for vegetarians but maybe it’s time to mix things up a bit Xmas Grin

My Niece and Nephew have a 'Selection Box' breakfast! Not joking either! It's only once a year!
