Volunteering often comes up as a suggestion but personally I would hate volunteering on Christmas Day, because it opens you up to other questions from fellow volunteers about how you’re spending the rest of Christmas Day.

Or maybe the people you’re helping inadvertently will painfully remind you of how alone you are by remarking upon how nice you are to leave your family for a few hours to spend it with them 😆

Plus I don’t drive and public transport is horrible on Christmas Day so I’d struggle to get around.

I would much rather get some good food and binge watch movies and read some books!

I’ve tried volunteering in previous years, but there is no shortage of volunteers and they want references!

I’m thinking of going away somewhere?
I had my first Christmas alone last year and it didn’t go particularly well, not because I was on my own as such but a series of unfortunate events conspired against me.
I’ve had a lonely year and I don’t think it would be good for me to spend Christmas alone.
i just don’t know what to do though.

Amsterdam is lovely at Christmas, most places are open and the canal bridges are lit with fairy lights. Madeira is popular as well.

I haven’t travelled alone before, I was half tempted to try and find some kind of Christmas thing at a hotel but then I thought it might be full of similarly sad misfits like me 😁

I usually spend the day alone since the last of my parents died and I'm more than happy to do so, I have a lovely day. I sometimes lie to people and say I'm going to a friend's place though, it's just easier.

Same, I just say I'm going to my brother's. People don't really want to know, they're just being polite.

As a veteran of Christmas alone, I get in decent food and wine and the bumper Radio Times.

I’ve travelled alone often and I don’t mind eating alone in a restaurant full of couples.

I’m doing that at Christmas.

MurphysColeslaw · 27/09/2026 10:15

I meant not doing that at Christmas.

My thoughts about going away at Christmas this year are - it’s expensive because so many people have the same idea, UK airports are cold/lots of traffic, would rather have a holiday in the summer, it’s just one day, some countries completely shut down for a week to spend family time, so they could be lonelier than the UK where everything opens up again on 27th December.

I didn’t know whether there might be some kind of thing where single people met up for a couple of days of socialising ? not for a hook up just not being alone.

That’s a very good idea @MurphysColeslaw

If you are being honest with yourself, would you want to do this?

MurphysColeslaw · 27/09/2026 11:48

Being on my own at home this year really wouldn’t be good for me.

So you would want to meet up with a group of strangers to spend a few days socialising with them over Christmas?

MurphysColeslaw · 27/09/2026 11:50

I don’t know what the alternative would have be ?

Again, would you want to do this? Spend a few days over Christmas socialising with a group of strangers?

MurphysColeslaw · 27/09/2026 11:52

In an ideal world no.

In an ideal world no.

But if the choice was Christmas alone or spending a few days socialising with strangers - you would choose the latter for this year?

MurphysColeslaw · 27/09/2026 11:55

Yes

Roosthename · 27/09/2026 11:58

MurphysColeslaw · 27/09/2026 11:55

Yes

So maybe see about setting something up?

Right - shame.

Yes

This thread comes up every year, I'm sure I remember in previous years people have commented that they were going solo to hotels, it might be worth searching previous threads to see where they were going and what they thought of it.

I've not been over the festive period, but these tend to be very sociable

Your husband will leave you with the cat to spend Christmas with his family?

Genuine question - but is this a happy marriage?

Edited

Hahaha, fair question! It sounds awful. It's a special year and the family want to be together one last time so its important he goes. Id never stop him. We're both teachers so will have plenty of time together during the holiday - so it's an arrangement we are okay with. If it wasnt a special year, he'd not even consider leaving me!
