Christmas Decorations - Do you put other stuff away?

Just wondering if people put there regular year round decor / ornaments away before decorating for Christmas or if you just work around it? I’m trying to make decorating a bit easier this year.

I don't have that much stuff out on display anyway. I'm not a minimalist or anything, I just don't have loads of ornaments so my xmas decs are in addition to everything else.

Woodwanderer · 07/07/2026 08:22

Correction typo their not there…

I have loads of stuff (not clutter, definitely not clutter) and i just work the decs around it. I enjoy incorporating the seasonal stuff with the permanent stuff. So, for example, i have a big glass vase and I fill it with baubles each Christmas.

Nousernameideaaga · 07/07/2026 08:24

I keep everything the same apart from crockery. We have an old dresser and plate rack in the kitchen and I have an obscene amount of Emma bridgewater Christmas crockery so I do a total swap around of that, for all of December

Rose785 · 07/07/2026 10:58

I always put mine away. We have a lot of Christmas decs so it would look too cluttered if I left everything out. I pull out the xmas decs and use the same storage boxes to swap out my usual ornaments, including vases, candles, photos, bowls ect.

I don’t have other seasonal decor. I do put some pretty fabric bunting across the back wall for Spring summer and actually I do have an autumnal garland I put there in Autumn and a coordinated garland for the mantle. And an autumnal wreath for the front door (ok shoot me now). But that’s just up October/November- and it gets a bit added to it for Halloween. Then Christmas in December… but my regular ‘stuff’ remains throughout. And no decs for Easter though the bunting kind of goes as it’s all pastel colours… 🐣

LimestonePavement · 07/07/2026 11:31

No, regular stuff remains. In fact, we left up a brass branch of mistletoe hanging in the hall from last Christmas because it looked nice.

SJM1988 · 07/07/2026 11:32

I put the regular stuff away when the Christmas decoration come out. I've collected over the years to have something for each normal decoration so having both out would look cluttered

WinterAconite · 07/07/2026 11:33

I put stuff from the mantlepiece away to make way for a garland. Last year I put a small tree on a sideboard and I'll remove the books that are currently on there next time.

I box up all pics , photos and ornaments and replace with festive stuff!
Have a brand new lounge to go mad with this year and can't wait !

I work around the regular things, some of them might get moved but I don't actually put anything away. Like a pp, fill empty vases with baubles etc.

Dragonscaledaisy · 07/07/2026 11:41

I put most things away and move plants to different rooms/add grow lights etc to create space for Christmas trees and the rest of the decor.

I do exactly the same. My kids always say it looks like Santa's Grotto, we have so much Christmas stuff. Its lovely

ToadRage · 07/07/2026 11:44

I might rearrange things to make room but I don't remove anything. My husband complained cos i moved his drinks tray into the kitchen to make room for my stable. I said at Christmas stable takes priority, Mary and Joseph need somewhere to go at the end of their long journey around the living room.

dancingdeidre · 07/07/2026 11:48

I put some things away to make space for the decorations, then have a rethink about what goes back where on New Years Day.

Surely M and J deserve a drink though, after all that.

Whoops75 · 07/07/2026 11:49

I put away, take decorations out of their box and put regular stuff in there.

ShowOfHands · 07/07/2026 11:57

I put things away. Our mantelpiece usually has a clock, photos and a vase on it for example and I put that in the boxes I store Christmas things in for 10.5 months a year and replace with a garland. Likewise, I put other things away such as the art and photos atop the piano, non-seasonal candles etc and replace with my Christmas village. I also then swap out crockery, tea towels, cutlery and miscellaneous kitchen items with their Christmas equivalents. Mostly Spode Christmas Tree but lots of other vintage Christmasware.

I have a LOT of Christmas stuff though. Even the cushions on the sofa change at Christmas. It takes an entire day to swap everything over.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/07/2026 08:03

I do a mixture. I have some things I swap out e.g. regular cushions go away and are replaced by Christmas cushions. I don't put away photos and things though.

NoCheesesForUsMeeces · 08/07/2026 08:31

I swap stuff - I have a bookshelf with photos on. Photos go in the Christmas box and are replaced by Christmas ornaments and I have a candle and a few ‘bits’ on the mantle which go in the Christmas box and are replaced with a garland and Christmas lanterns.

I do have a few things I work around/alter. For example, I have a few plant pots that are pretty and have evergreen plants/cactus in and for this I work incorporate them by adding lights or decorations.

My table get swapped completely as it’s either neutral or blue (runner/mats etc). It’s new this year so the plan is to put that away and have the table cream and red for most of December, with Christmas crockery pitched about (I have most of the Spode Christmas tree set) but we’ll have to see how that works nearer the time.

I decorate for different seasons year round. So I have seasonal items for each season then for example Easter things go with my Spring things. Christmas goes with Winter. I like to do a bit of a 'spring clean' at the beginning of each season and put fresh things out.

hattie43 · 09/07/2026 16:49

I put mine away because it’d be too much with all my Christmas decs .

7238SM · 09/07/2026 16:59

regular year round decor / ornaments ???

I have a display cabinet with ornaments in but very little else. (tail end of renovating and haven't bought much home decor as yet). No, I don't need to move anything to add the tree, decorations around the house etc. I use different table napkins, trivets and some Christmas serving dishes but don't put the others away- they just stay in the drawers.

tinyspiny · 09/07/2026 17:01

We have very limited ‘clutter’ and it stays out , although it may get moved around a bit for the Christmas clutter .
