Done with Christmas?

Anyone else done with Christmas?
We have family coming today so I'll have to do it, but honestly, I love Christmas but we started a week ago by visiting family & now I'm over it! Im tempted to take decorations down tomorrow!

How long have the decorations been up for?

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 26/12/2025 09:24

End of November

No family today just champagne, leftovers and TV. Everyone in this household can fend for themselves today. Just waiting for noon to crack open the champagne!

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 26/12/2025 10:10

@Countduckula52 sounds lovely!

You started way too early. Next year put your decorating up mid December and don't start " Christmas " until it's actually Christmas!

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 26/12/2025 10:17

@Bigearringsbigsmile we always put decorations up beginning of December, so we put them up a few days earlier this year due to the way the weekend fell. I might do around 7th December next time. I love the run up to Christmas but once its done I'm over it. This bit between Christmas and New Year is a strange week!

I always read on MN that the answer to being ‘Christmased out’ is put the decorations up later but I often think it’a not a wreath and tree which is too much for people. OP what has been too Christmasy for you? Is it too many other people and not enough time for yourself, decorations for too long, too much indulgent food or some thing else?

NessShaness · 26/12/2025 10:20

I prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day, it’s much quieter and we’re all less tired so I’m not quite done yet.

Decorations have been up since 1st December, so I plan to take them down early next week and have a good clean!

queenofwandss · 26/12/2025 10:20

It’s my last day of being “on” for Christmas and seeing lots of family, being in very loud chaotic environments. It’s all good fun but I am bloody tired now. I don’t get a long break from work so it’s not like I have proper time to chill out.

I have enjoyed it but I am ready for it to be done now!

PrioritisePleasure24 · 26/12/2025 10:23

I think it’s different for different people. Some people do all the leg work and planning, cooking, organising so i can see the burnout.
It was my first day off work yesterday so i’m nowhere near done. But we’ve done no hosting and not too many family visits etc.a Tree is always up until new year but not 12th night.

WinterFrogs · 26/12/2025 10:26

I tend to let Christmas happen around me and take no notice of it until around the solstice. We keep it very simple, so don't get sick of it. Usually I rip decorations down before new year but I'm tempted to go the full 12 days this year. It's nice having lights in the house till the days start lengthening.
Fortunately my family know not to expect too much from me! We are doing a light trail this week.

ScottChegg · 26/12/2025 10:30

I think we're all pretty much over it full stop here. The kids are all adults now, it doesn't feel like Christmas somehow, even yesterday. I don't know. I wouldn't be bothered really if we didn't do it next year, I don't think.

bleakmidwintering · 26/12/2025 10:30

I put the decorations up mid November and I’m done with it all. I’m enjoying throwing rubbish away this am and I want my house back with no guests now.

Jinglejinglejingle7 · 26/12/2025 10:31

@Only2daystogo yes I think youre right, I think this year we went to family for 5 days and did christmas there a week before , then we were hone for christmas, but saw some of Dh family. I think I'm peopled out!! Had 2 christmas dinners and did lights, kids activities etc with lots of people. Im not back in work until the monday after new year-so I think i want that time to do house things etc.

Christmasfree · 26/12/2025 10:35

Yep! The decorations are down (been up since the second weekend of December) and replaced with our new years decs (lights, mirrorball etc)- not because we are bothered about new year its just a nice bit between xmas decs and back to normal.

Alovelyhotbath · 26/12/2025 10:41

I think that people start it too early, put too much pressure and stress on themselves and by the time it is actually christmas, the the time where it is actually time for the tree, decorations and family, people are overwhelmed and burnt out and end up being 'done' with Christmas.

Might be worth considering next year putting your decorations up later, spacing events, activities and family time out and most importantly, planning in some time to yourself and treating yourself. Maybe make the 27th a day to chill or head out somewhere where its your last day of christmas that is more chilled and relaxed.

I’ve said exactly the same. We don’t have any family and don’t do a big festive Christmas anyway, but this year felt very flat for all of us. Definitely considering going away next year for something different.

Jellycatspyjamas · 26/12/2025 11:47

I love Boxing Day, it’s a day to chill and relax in our house. DD is up and about, DS is still sleeping . I’m going to start making brunch/lunch soon. We’ll do a long dog walk, then movies, chocolate and treats maybe some board games later on and I’ve promised myself a long bath with some really nice bath stuff I’ve been gifted.

mondaytosunday · 26/12/2025 11:59

Im pretty much over it once the New Year comes, but never understood a couple friends who took the tree down right away. This coming week is the real time to chill and veg out, no pressure to do anything (though my son returns to work tomorrow and my DD has some hospital appointments and essays to work on for uni), eat leftovers and enjoy the coziness. Then it’s the NewYear and I feel that’s a perfect time to take all the decs down fir a clean start to the year, but my DD would not like it so we do wait til January 6.

soccermum10 · 26/12/2025 12:04

No I've loved Christmas again this year. No family round today we're sat watching volume 2 of Stranger Things and waiting for our maccies delivery! Bliss😊 😁🍔🍟

houseofisms · 26/12/2025 12:09

My tree got turfed out the house at 8am this morning! Boxing Day I hate all decorations after Christmas Day. Tree goes up 1st Dec

Peridot1 · 26/12/2025 12:16

I’m still in Christmas mode. Nice chill day today. Dinner is leftovers with some fresh roast potatoes.

Normally we have family come to stay over NY and we are all still in Christmas mode. Still loving the decorations and lights. This year they aren’t coming so we are going away to the sun tomorrow which will be nice but feels odd. I feel like I’m being short-changed my time of enjoying all the Christmas lights etc and chilling on the sofa with a good book.

I really don’t understand getting rid of it all on Boxing Day.

Well, we're all different, but for me Christmas has only just started and Boxing Day is my favourite day of the holidays- no pressure- everyone relaxing. My husband and I have been for a long walk this morning and now I can enjoy reading my book and eating cheese, under the festive glow of the tree lights. These 'twixmas' days are the ones I don't want to rush but to slow down and savour.

Ilikewinter · 26/12/2025 12:24

Our decorations will come down tomorrow, they went up 2nd weekend in December. What's been different for us is having annual leave from Friday 19th so we did lots of 'Christmas stuff" earlier in the week. Back to work Monday so just gonna enjoy last few days off.
