Lighthearted it is just a Sunday dinner says most .....Any confessions of your Christmas dinner / lunch. For example I wanted to serve at 3.30 after the Kings speech but we actually ate at 5 oops and or did you have enough food , too much or did you forget a dish ???

We also ended up serving at 5pm - bloody goose fat roasties always seem to take hours for some reason! We did have enough of everything, and plenty for bubble and squeak. The gravy was the highlight, in my humble opinion. My confession is that I stubbornly insisted on mash as well as roast despite DH telling me it was superfluous and nobody would eat it. I had one spoonful and the rest is sitting in the kitchen as a monument to my wrongitude.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 25/12/2025 18:57

We were supposed to eat at 2 but it was nearer 3, @sprigatitoI also did mash as well as roasts and what is it about goose fat potatoes that make them take so long to cook?

I’ve just put cheese and nibbles out for supper, and no one has helped themselves yet, think we’re all still stuffed!

Keepoffmyartichokes · 25/12/2025 19:07

My FIL asked for Sherry trifle, which I bought despite no one in my house liking it, he opted for the Yule log I bought for me and DS as we don't like Christmas pud!! It's a good job I love him 🤣

wendywoopywoo222 · 25/12/2025 19:15

I prepped the parsnips but forgot to put them in the oven. 🤭🤣

My husband peeled and prepped mash this morning to go with roastieses and I stopped him as we only wanted a spoonful if mash I had some ready made root veg mash in the fridge we had that no one any the wiser.

Tripped over a sodding nerf gun and dropped most of the carrots! 🤦‍♀️🤣 and ran a good hour or 2 behind schedule, other than that it was great!

CornishTiger · 25/12/2025 19:47

I forgot to buy potatoes and ended up roasting some jacket potatoes!

ExquisiteDressing · 25/12/2025 19:52

I made braised red cabbage for the first time (Delia's recipe). No one else wanted to try it, I tried a bit before serving and was a bit meh, I did have some with dinner but it was lost amongst all the other flavours on the plate. DH is clearing up and just came in and said "can I chuck that last bit of cabbage" and without hesitation I said yes. Lucky I only made quarter a cabbage-worth of it.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 25/12/2025 19:57

Was a huge success, ds 2 had 2 platefuls. Still plenty of cold meat and such for tomorrow. But is it just me or when youre doing the cooking can you not face a whopping plateful? I didn't have any braised leeks or red cabbage because i was stuffed.

cheesychipsontheoche · 25/12/2025 20:07

Forgot to serve the gammon so that’s for tomorrow. Also forgot to cook the cauliflower cheese but no one was bothered fortunately.
absolutely shed loads of food left though. Cats having a ball with a small plate of turkey

Goinggreymammy · 25/12/2025 20:10

I offered my BIL soup for starter and managed to whack the bowl off the counter and broke it. Luckily I hadn't put in the soup! I then stabbed my finger picking up the pieces but managed to cover up and not get blood on any food and nobody noticed.
Dinner main course was about 30 mins late but the kids had wandered off to play and adults were happy drinking, chatting and picking at starters so nobody minded.
This has been my best Christmas day in a few years.

The way you typed that did make me laugh. 😂I might have employed the 5 second rule on a dropped potato. 😅

😱 Oh my gosh, it's lucky you had the 'spares' in!

Hedjwitch · 25/12/2025 20:30

Surprisingly,it all went to plan and only 5 minutes late to table! Dd1 has taken most of the leftovers home with her so enough for me and DH tomorrow then its all gone and no waste,so very happy with that.

IsThisLifeNow · 25/12/2025 20:32

30 minutes late, goose fat roasties took forever, but were very tasty, Brocoli was cold, but meh, still a great meal!

Roselily123 · 25/12/2025 20:39

Forgot to put the pigs in blankets in the oven
Forgot to take the roast parsnips out the oven - they burnt.
Should have eaten at 1pm - it was 4pm Blush

AllJoyAndNoFun · 25/12/2025 20:56

After 18 years MIL admitted that she doesn’t actually like bread sauce- I’ve been making it specially for her as DH said she likes it- apparently not 🤣🤣🤣. None of us like it so I never have to get it again.

Rictasmorticia · 25/12/2025 21:28

DH was in charge of shopping and cooking. He had to go out for pigs in blankets. The request of youngest son. Then forgot to cook them. Dinner was great and we are taking them to DD where we will be eating our third Christmas linch.

@Keepoffmyartichokes DM does the same. Goes on about Christmas pudding and Christmas cake, so I get some for her. Always, every time, she eats the other things instead and takes the cake and pudding home with her.

I bought pink prawns assuming they were cooked, but they weren’t so that set me back a bit. We got there in the end. I don’t rate the chilled potatoes at all. Prefer frozen, or my own.

SummerInSun · 25/12/2025 21:46

After a couple of years of there not being quite enough food with my mother and aunt (in their 70s with shrinking appetites) telling everyone how much of everything to bring (family Christmas of 20 people so everyone brings different dishes), one of my cousins and I got together and finally told them there wasn’t enough food, got the turkey person to get two more turkey breast rolls and ourselves tripled the amount of veggies and pudding. Everyone got to have as much as they wanted including seconds and we all got to take leftovers home!!!

Slurple · 25/12/2025 23:01

My goose fat roasties took ages too! At least an hour and a half, compared to the 45 mins I'd scheduled for them. Ended up serving them as the final course 😂

FairyBatman · 25/12/2025 23:04

I completely forgot to cook the sprouts, and I prefer Boxing Day bubble and squeak to Christmas dinner.

Kickinthenostalgia · 25/12/2025 23:08

We were about half hour later than planned as the gas pressure was shit. Luckily we’d cooked some yesterday.
