Uneven amount of gifts! Help me

I’ve gone and done it again…dd12 has 30 gifts and ds10 has 23 😅

I need to balance it out. (and no, I don’t want to take away seven of hers)

so far I’ve thought of
a rubix cube
a plain chocolate orange( I had an order age one but forgot he doesn’t like orange flavour!)
a fidget toy of some sort

hit me with ideas please…nothing too big and no major tat. I like useful gifts.

Well you've missed a trick there because unless he has his fave drink all year round ready in the fridge, you can defo give them bits and pieces like that for xmas, even if its stocking filler

Unless your kids wouldn't appreciate them...but then you've got other issues going on!

It’s not that he wouldn’t appreciate as such, he just wouldn’t understand why I had wrapped it, I don’t do stockings.

What happened to the days when 4 gifts was a normal amount? I never got that many gifts from anyone. But my go to gift is bath stuff, my cousin loved a set of paw patrol bath toys I got him one year. I also like to gift craft sets, cos a) i love crafting and b) it's something fun for them to do that doesn't involve screens.

I don’t know I’m 40 and I never got 4 gifts…I got a sack full 🙌

4 or 5 each for me and my brother was normal plus stockings full of little things and gifts from friends and other relatives. My parents weren't poor.

Ok @ToadRage thats how you did Christmas. I had a sack and a main Santa gift. Never ever had a stocking. I did have a treasure hunt with clues for one gift though. My parents weren’t poor either…it’s almost like people have different traditions I suppose

If you spent equally what does it matter- just explain the money is the same

fair enough!

ItsAWonderfulLifeforMe · 19/12/2025 21:14

I think your children will be thrilled at all their lovely things that you have thoughtfully selected for them. Yes, it’s a lot of money you are spending but lots of those things they would need anyway or as you say some people would just buy them as they ask all year. We do stockings and under tree presents. You have saved yourself a serious amount of faff not doing stockings as that’s where all the small bits and tat find their way in!

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 19/12/2025 21:26

I think you are being ridiculous but since you insist on it I would recommend a game of Dobble. It's quick to play, good for mixed age groups and comes in loads of themes. I've bought a Lilo and Stitch one for my little goddaughter and a Star Wars one for my teenage nephew.

FrodisCapering · 19/12/2025 09:06

You can't be serious, surely?
Christmas is an absolutely magical time for children. Part of that is the thrill of presents.

Yes but 30 presents?! I've never known or heard of any child to get 30 presents, personally, max 5 is what I've seen/ experienced. Lots of my cousins have kids and they'd only get a small amount of carefully considered presents. Thought this was something they'd only maybe show in American films, even if that? Even in films kids seem to not be getting 30 presents?

Not sure if it's a cultural thing? We're Scandinavian/ mixed European/ Kiwi and quite comfortable, so it's not a 'can't afford more presents' thing.

Literally first time I hear of anyone getting this many presents, but people on this thread seem to think of it as perfectly ordinary, so perhaps that's normal for British children?

Or are these stocking fillers, not individually wrapped gifts under the tree?

I’m not sure where you’ve been but it’s pretty normal to get more than five presents at Christmas. I’m in my mid fifties and even when I was young we’d get more than 5 presents. 15ish was normal, now you can’t go onto facebook without seeing present mountains.

Statsquestion1 · 18/12/2025 18:01

Another book would be no harm 🙌

so…

book
rubix cube
pens
Plain chocoate orange

3 to go 🤣

Why are you buying things for the sake of buying things?

My child has five presents and I intend on picking up a larger present - bringing to
six in total.

He will also get presents from family.

I don’t understand why you are being so much??

Tamtim · 20/12/2025 05:11

Gravitrax is he likes stem toys.
You could make up your own box of different sweets or savoury snacks he hasn’t tried that you think he’d like. You could go to an Asian supermarket and pick out some Japanese items for example.
Magnetic fidget toy
Neon wall sign
Nike socks

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 20/12/2025 05:24

purpleme12 · 18/12/2025 21:31

I don't get this
Do you just get the same number of presents for them both then?
Not just spend the same amount on each?

I mean they're old enough to know some things cost more than others anyway

I’ve always tried to get it to the same number because we open in turn. It would be a bit crap for one kid if the other kid had loads more to open while they just sit there watching.

Sunnymysunshine · 20/12/2025 06:43

Fluffy socks
Bath bombs
The fake "stanley" cups , xmas themed.

My problem then would be, oh the other one will like that i'll buy 2, then we're in the same boat 🤣.
Ive got 2 and the gifts arent even in number but in value. But mine are 14/18, one with a birthday in 2 days!
Oooh also how about a little shower speaker?

Givemeausernamepls · 20/12/2025 08:01

I would have said socks, shower gel, books, choc to even up! I like mine to have similar amounts and spend similar amounts.

YourJoyousDenimExpert · 20/12/2025 08:05

At 10, my son would have liked:
a bic pen with the four colour options
a tube of Pringles
fidget toys
small torch
a football ( he was forever losing them)
bike lights
cycling/rugby gloves
pack of cards or a card game

I am having the same balancing dilemma and mine are both over 18 now 🤣
Good luck!

Sux2buthen · 20/12/2025 08:07

ElleintheWoods · 18/12/2025 20:41

Is this actually a usual/ normal amount of presents to receive for a child?

I’d have thought anything over 5 would be highly unusual?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Elektra1 · 20/12/2025 08:09

Should be equal expenditure, not equal number of gifts. So if DS got a PlayStation and DD got lots of smaller items to the same value, that would be fine.

I get this but I like to aim for both if I can…sometimes I also aim for equality in sizes too 😅 tying myself up in knots is great 🤣

Bike lights and small torch are already in there 🙌
funnily enough never loses footballs and all rugby kit is good for now.

Glad to see I’ll still be in the same conundrum in 10 years 🤣

Yes!! This could happen too! Although his sister is 2 years older and into very different things. But it could still happen!

We don’t do as many gifts as that or spend as much however I see where you’re coming from and you’d like each child to have the exact same number of gifts .
Suggestions of pens, notebook, Mint terrys chocolate orange , a Christmas decoration for the tree with his name ?? ( only easy to do now if he has a name that is popular now and available in gift shops ) Christmas themed pjs , a squishmallow ? A jelly cat Christmas themed item ?
