Hotel chocolat velvetiser?

My partner mentioned how good this looked and after making yet another hot chocolate with chunks of powder undisolved I'm tempted to order a last minute gift for us both

So is it any good? I've eyed up a selection of the sachets too and they aren't too badly priced

Or any other recommendations for something similar? I looked up dualit milk frother and hot chocolate maker, is that decent?

Thank you 🌟

The original velvetiser was the same as the dualit one (which is probably cheaper now) the new one i have read a lot of people have had issues with the bottom burning so I wouldn't be spending money on the new one yet.

There's plenty of hot chocolate makers around am sure they are probably all pretty similar .

I have a Nespresso milk frother and if makes for a fab hot chocolate with cream on top of course!

PuzzlingRecluse · 03/12/2025 19:48

I have one & love it, I’d replace it if it broke. I also use it just to heat & froth milk for morning coffee

m00rfarm · 03/12/2025 19:50

We have the dualit one which is excellent.

I have one - a Christmas gift a few years ago and I love it!

Alwaystired23 · 03/12/2025 20:00

I had one from dh last year for Christmas. Its great. I add Baileys and a shot of white chocolate syrup 😋

We have a Velvetiser and while it does make exceptionally nice drinking chocolate, it's not what I'd call hot. Even heating up the cup doesn't help very much. Not an issue if you don't want to wait to drink it, but I do like my drinks hot so it's a minor irritant for me. It does make it very well though, not a single lump or detectable bit of powder.

The actual sachets of drinking chocolate that Hotel Chocolat make are really lovely, much better than your average tub of Cadburys. And a few would probably make a nice stocking filler if you do any.

Most used appliance in our home other than the kettle. We gave up on the proper sachets because we didn’t have a mansion to remortgage, so we just use the Starbucks power in it now. Used daily 3/4 times and still going strong after 3 years.

the inner bit did break (in the dishwasher so be sure to hand wash) but they were great and sent out a replacement straight away x

I love mine. Works really well with the dark chocolate packets and soy milk too if you have dairy-free family/friends.

What are brands are the best if not the Hotel Chocolat one? Has anyone tried the Salter or the Lakeland ones? Both a lot cheaper.

I saw the salter one recommended here and bought it and it is terrible. I tried powder and it left lumps and I tried chocolate and half of it remained unmelted. The temperature was a bit inconsistent and as op said even the velvetiser doesn’t exactly get hot, a few times it was a bit too cold to be enjoyable by the time I’d walked from the kitchen and sat down.

CatchHimDerry · 03/12/2025 20:29

Got gifted one, love it. Temperature good for me and I am usually a hot hot person

We use all different powders, flakes, coffees in it

Recommend

I love ours, thought it would be a novelty but is a permanent feature on our worktop and whole family use it. Ours does get nice and hot, but not scalding! It is really luxurious, thick and foamy. We do use just Cadburys powder now as the hotel chocolat sachets are so expensive and aren’t gluten free and my daughter is coeliac, but sachets are basically just grated chocolate so you could grate some in a jar if you want posh hot chocs!

HappiestSleeping · 03/12/2025 20:38

My wife loved hers. I was ambivalent due to the faff (it isn't significant faff, just a bit more than justified the outcome).

She liked hot chocolate though.

ThatNattyPlayer · 03/12/2025 20:40

I had the old version, recently got the new one that does hot and cold drinks, I love it!

AnonKat · 03/12/2025 20:41

I love mine. My mil got use one last year. In the winter I have one every evening as a sweet treat.

Chumpingtonquinces · 03/12/2025 20:43

The one I used at friend’s house was fab but they just use cocoa and sugar. Imagine that’s a lot cheaper than specialist sachets. Tasted delicious.

JulesJules · 03/12/2025 21:10

We bought both DDs Dualit chocotisers which they love, one likes hot choc and one matcha latte. D1 had a Salter one I think previously but that didn't last very long.

They both use oat milk, the drinks come out really velvety and creamy. And the Dualit ones look good too, they have the copper coloured one, we got them from John Lewis.

TheChosenTwo · 03/12/2025 21:13

I don’t have one but my mum does, the dc sometimes have a chocolate at hers and all of them including my mum say it’s just warm chocolate. Mum has offered it to the kids as she likes a hot drink but they said no thanks as they like a hot drink too 😂
Also anything that requires hand washing is a no from me thanks! The dc use a saucepan of milk on the hob, takes about 4 minutes for a hot hot drink (actually several drinks at once unlike the velvetiser) and the whole lot can go in the dishwasher!

socks1107 · 03/12/2025 21:17

I have one and I love it

tealandteal · 03/12/2025 21:21

I don’t have one so cant comment but a cheape solution is one of those mini electric whisks. Whizzes up any lumps.

Ohhhtheshameofit · 03/12/2025 21:24

I love mine, and it is definitely hot. I do not use the sachets though (too pricy, too sickly and too many calories!) I use Cadbury’s highlights and it’s fab.

Arran2024 · 03/12/2025 21:27

I got one when they first came out and when my daughter and her boyfriend got a flat together, that's what she wanted from us as a gift.

I find it hot enough. It isn't scalding hot but imo it's hot enough and you can press the button and make it go again if you like.

MCF86 · 03/12/2025 21:32

I was tempted but reviews on every one I looked up said they weren't very hot, and didn't make very big servings.

I spent a few quid on an electric mini whisk thing instead, and whack a mug of milk in the microwave
