Hotel chocolat velvetiser?

Imissgoldengrahams · 03/12/2025 19:42

My partner mentioned how good this looked and after making yet another hot chocolate with chunks of powder undisolved I'm tempted to order a last minute gift for us both

So is it any good? I've eyed up a selection of the sachets too and they aren't too badly priced

Or any other recommendations for something similar? I looked up dualit milk frother and hot chocolate maker, is that decent?

Thank you 🌟

I bought one for DD for Christmas gift a couple years ago. I agree the drink isn't roasting hot, but personally I prefer that. It's been well used and still works fine.

It doesn't do anything a saucepan and whisk wouldn't, so whilst a great gift for tween/teen I'd not have bought one otherwise.

I had the old version, recently got the new one that does hot and cold drinks, I love it!

I have the original, but if you're buying new I'd definitely go for the hot and cold model.

The Hotel Chocolat sachets are utterly fabulous and well worth the money. Practically a daily staple in our house this time of year. I would recommend either using a machine or heating on a hob and whisking for the sachets as I had poor lumpy results from pouring over hot milk and stirring; though I'm not sure the Velvetiser is necessarily worth the cost. I have milk frother from Lidl that cost about £10 and does a great job.

I have a velvetizer and it gets used a lot, every single day. Tbh I'm really surprised teen hasn't stolen it away to uni.

ShyMaryEllen · 03/12/2025 22:43

I have an old-style one and use it a lot. I put the mug in the microwave for 30 seconds after it’s made, as I like hot hot drinks.

Celiathebanshee · 03/12/2025 22:49

My daughter has a velvetiser which got broken (her sister tried to help and put it in water) so we replaced it because she uses it every day. It’s great and the new model is even better

WickedElpheba · 03/12/2025 22:49

I have the velvetiser and love it. The new one does hot and cold but if you're not bothered for that feature you might get an old style one for less money than they usually are. I understand the Dualit one is similar. There was a hot chocolate maker in the Aldi or Lidl book this week as well.

Following - looking at these for a Christmas gift for DS (13).

How many drinks do they make? I considered one a few years back but I have to make 7 hot chocolates at the same time and was concerned it was a one at a time sort of thing so would be a huge faff.

One yes and you have to rinse it between each one to cool it back down else the next drink doesn't get warm enough

IBorAlevels · 04/12/2025 10:13

Got one from Tiger about 3 years ago at a fraction of the price, still going strong.

fucit · 04/12/2025 10:13

The velvetiser is lovely imo. Dm gave us one a coille
of years ago. Really tasty hot chocolate, no lumps. Like a pp mentioned, the temp isn’t hot hot. It’s hot imo, but immediately drinkable - personally that’s what I prefer, I don’t want a drink that’s too hot/involves waiting to drink.

One.

7 would be a huge faff yes.

Not wowed by ours- the finished drinks aren't hot enough and the fact you can only make one at a time is a PITA. It's a nice idea but you can get better results with pan and a spoon with decent chocolate.

ShyMaryEllen · 04/12/2025 14:28

I agree about the heat, and up to a point about the size; but I disagree that you can make better in a pan. They do make delicious chocolate drinks.

Tuesdayschild50 · 04/12/2025 19:58

We have hotel chocolat one the drinks are expensive but lovely for winter time .

bobby81 · 04/12/2025 20:27

We love ours & use it most days. Normally with supermarket hot chocolate as the hotel chocolat ones are a bit pricey when we all want one! It’s probably our most used small kitchen appliance.

BeaLola · 04/12/2025 20:53

We have the old style copper one. It's used a lot and even I like a hot chocolate from it and I'm not a huge hot chocolate lover

We buy the Pendragon chocolate flakes in 1kg bags £16:99 plus p&p (we usually buy 3 or 4 bags at a time) and we get the Rum and Salted caramel flavour

RollyPollyBatFace · 04/12/2025 21:07

Dualit make the velvetiser so if you want the same effect for less money then get that

I’ve had a few over the years and got the new model last month for my birthday. It’s very nice in the shade ‘pebble’

and I always use the hotel chocolat sachets - a top tip is that you can get two drinks out of one sachetn- it’s plenty chocolatey

GoingForAGallop · 04/12/2025 21:09

It’s ok! The drawback is that you can only make 1 drink at a time and it’s not very hot.

Damnd · 04/12/2025 21:13

It's crap. Buy a five pound milk frother. Welcome.

ThatGreenFawn · 04/12/2025 21:30

I have one and use it so much. We have a subscription for the hot chocolate so we never run out. The chocolate is a bit expensive but definitely worth it.

RollyPollyBatFace · 04/12/2025 21:57

It’s not supposed to be piping hot btw. They explain that it’s how the French drink it - so it’s perfectly warm but not super hot

SoftLass · 04/12/2025 22:03

We have an instant pot one, used on a daily basis. It's fabulous, makes super frothy hot chocolate and nicely hot. Plus cheaper than the velvetiser!

workdilemma123abc · 04/12/2025 22:08

i got one from robert dyas in the sale last year for about £25 - worth every penny. if you’re on a budget, a milk frother whisk thing does the job - electric ones that are really small. the robert dyas one i got has a cold foam option too - i’ll have to check the brand.

to be honest, if you’re only using it for powder i wouldn’t get it - it’s best with those real chocolate flakes, but then you spend £100 on a device, then £100s on the bloody stuff for it!!!

it just depends if you think you’ll use it - i was convinced i’d use it everyday and i use mine for frothed milk predominantly, although i’m not even sure the proper hotel chocolat one even has that as an option!
