Hotel chocolat velvetiser?

Imissgoldengrahams · 03/12/2025 19:42

My partner mentioned how good this looked and after making yet another hot chocolate with chunks of powder undisolved I'm tempted to order a last minute gift for us both

So is it any good? I've eyed up a selection of the sachets too and they aren't too badly priced

Or any other recommendations for something similar? I looked up dualit milk frother and hot chocolate maker, is that decent?

Thank you 🌟

It’s not supposed to be piping hot btw. They explain that it’s how the French drink it - so it’s perfectly warm but not super hot

These things are a matter of taste, though. I don't care how the French drink it - I like my hot drinks hot 😀.

It's really not a problem though - giving it 30 seconds in the microwave is hardly a chore.

I have a hot chocolate shaker and love it. Very quick to use and clean (or can go in dishwasher), inexpensive and makes very smooth hot chocolate.

Peggysue14 · 04/12/2025 22:34

It’s nothing special, I have one and it’s used occasionally but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. The M and S hot chocolate flakes are really nice.

notnorman · 04/12/2025 22:36

press the button again if you want it hotter. First go it’s a bit lukewarm as some of the heat goes into the metal

Imissgoldengrahams · 05/12/2025 07:39

For anyone who has the dualit one, what do you use for it? Does it have its own sachets or can you use powder?
I dont mind about buying more sachets, I just need to not have clumpy hot chocolate!!

We have one, doesnt get that hot and only makes one cup at a time (not even that big of a cup too). I wouldn't waste money on it and buy a knock off instead. The satchets of proper chocolate are worth it though, I'd buy these!

DiscoBeat · 05/12/2025 14:24

We bought one for DS last year and he still used it most days. We just buy normal hot chocolate though (green and blacks or the new Dubai chocolate one). But we may upgrade it for him to the one that doubles as a milk shake maker, then he can take this one to uni next year.

I don’t have one but my mum does, the dc sometimes have a chocolate at hers and all of them including my mum say it’s just warm chocolate. Mum has offered it to the kids as she likes a hot drink but they said no thanks as they like a hot drink too 😂
Also anything that requires hand washing is a no from me thanks! The dc use a saucepan of milk on the hob, takes about 4 minutes for a hot hot drink (actually several drinks at once unlike the velvetiser) and the whole lot can go in the dishwasher!

Same we do ours on hob... milk, cocoa/cacao and sugar.

I love it, I have to limit myself otherwise I’d be the size of a house. Tesco has started selling chocolate flakes but I’ve yet to try them.

I do think there could be a serving suggestion but also maybe an ‘extra hot’ option
the issue really is that if you’re making 2 or more the first one is freezing by the time you’re done!

ExquisiteDecorating · 06/12/2025 15:14

We’ve had ours for several years and love it, the temperature is just right so long as you drink it right away, if you are used to letting tea and coffee stand for 5 mins before drinking you can get caught out by it cooling, but it isn’t hard to get used to. It’s no bother at all to clean either and you don’t have to stand over it like you do with a pan.

Yes, I would like an option to get it hot enough in the machine, to be fair. I would also like to be able to make two cups at the same time, as I tend to have chocolate with friends as often as on my own. As it is, I do love it though. It's the only one I've had, so can't compare it with other brands.

sunshinesky · 06/12/2025 22:32

Don’t bother, it doesn’t get hot enough, doesn’t make a big mug and it’s a pain if you want to make a few at the same time.

Eesha · 07/12/2025 06:54

Dualit made the original velvetiser for HC. Now the patent has run out, Dualit are doing their own one. Same product though. Im tempted by the HC one purely on aesthetics!

Imissgoldengrahams · 07/12/2025 17:26

Very mixed reviews
I do like a very hot drink, I know the French don't want it that way but imo it shouldn't ever be luke warm so that's put me off
The dualit one comes in a very hot (excuse the pun) second but I can't seem to find thr chocolate flakes for that? Does anyone know please? Or can you use regular powder

Re Just using a saucepan, that's what I've been doing for years but I always get horrible clumps of powder that hasn't dissolved and it gives me the ick 😂
No matter what i do, hot water or hot milk its big clumps and I hate it so I want to invest in the right thing and give my partner a proper surprise

I got my dd the lidl one for about £20. She loves it - that said she only needs to make one at a time and she also only likes her hot chocolate warm not hot.

Rictasmorticia · 07/12/2025 17:36

I have a velvetiser and I love it. I use it for chocolate and coffee. I find the hotel chocolate sachets quite expensive so I get my sachets from Amazon. They are just as good.

You can just buy chocolate flakes from anywhere for it. Eg the Chocolate Society or uou can chop up chocolate yourself or you can use the Hotel Chocolat ones. Or powder.

Whoevenarethey · 07/12/2025 18:14

I love my velvetiser. I had it as a Xmas present last year and in winter use it most days for a chocolatey treat. I find it is drinkable once finished whereas my son waits for it to cool down.
I agree on the cup size not being very big though, with the actual chocolate flakes from hotel Chocolat (I haven't tried other brands) it does make more though than if using Cadbury powder.

SisyphusDad · 07/12/2025 18:28

I bought the new one as I gave the original version to DS2 to take to uni (he also loves hot chocolate).

The things I've noticed about the new one:

  • It definitely makes the drink hotter than the original - the original was OK, but this is better.
  • Still works fine with other powders and finer grated chocolate - I use Green & Black's, but it doesn't like bigger chocolate drops, which the original could cope with if there weren't too many.
  • The new one is a LOT foamier - you couldn't really tell with the original, but its very obvious with the new one.
  • The cold drinks are OK but nothing to get excited about, and given that they apparently need very finely milled chocolate, I guess it's going to be hard to use anything other that the Hotel Chocolat powder.
  • Interesting to read about the burning on the base. I'm always left with a half-moon of chocolate that needs scrubbing off. It certainly doesn't clean by just running it again with water and washing up liquid.

Would I upgrade from the original if I didn't need to? No. Do I regret getting it as a replacement instead of the original? Not really.

Hollyjollynights · 07/12/2025 21:18

The Aldi hot chocolate maker is in stores atm

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 07/12/2025 21:51

Absolutely love ours. Gets used all the time. So much better than having milk boiling over in a pan or the microwave and making a huge mess.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 13/12/2025 11:13

OP, I am a bit late to this party but we recently bought the ProCook hot chocolate maker and it is excellent. It makes 400ml of hot chocolate, lovely and hot, and the jug is removable so can go in the dishwasher or be washed without the unit. The frothy milk is really good for a latte or cappuccino as well, it makes proper firm froth that you can eat with a spoon. Highly recommend. (Do make sure you put the milk in first and then the hot choc or cocoa as it won't mix or heat properly otherwise.)

Mumsknot · 13/12/2025 13:07

I was totally against it but Dp got one and I now use it more than him 😂. It makes amazing hot chocolate

HaveaVeryMerryBerryChristmas · 13/12/2025 13:13

I just do the milk in microwave method with cocoa and sugar, drop of vanilla. Works for us, and one less appliance on the counter next to coffee machine. If I want it extra smooth, coffee machine does hot instant frothy milk, so I sometimes use that with chocolate as well.
