Just asking this cos I only found out after moving in with my husband that everyone is different.
In my childhood home presents went under the tree as soon as they were wrapped and that is what I do. Tree presents were from friends and family, Father Christmas only did stockings and they were always not wrapped, small, cheap, token gifts like a novelty bubble bath, sweets, chocolate coins, a small toy and a Christmas decoration.
According to my husband presents should not go under the tree til Christmas Eve, all of them are delivered by Father Christmas even if the label says from Mum and Dad etc. and there was always one labeled from Santa (I was always taught to call him Father Christmas).
What did/do you do? Has it changed from what you did as a child? If so why?

Presents from friends and family went under the tree then were opened Christmas Eve then Santa came and Christmas morning we opened a big pile (think things like a book, an annual, selection box, teddy, Spirograph etc). We didn’t do stockings

ResusciAnnie · 27/11/2025 20:14

Under the tree as they arrive or when they are wrapped, mainly because we don’t have anywhere else to store it all. They’re from us/the giver otherwise the kids would think their parents/grandparents etc didn’t give them a Christmas present which would be most alarming surely.

Stocking magically filled during Christmas Eve night of course. From Father Christmas :)

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 27/11/2025 20:14

As above. Presents from friends and relatives whenever they arrive. Father Christmas/santa brought all presents including stocking and parents did not "give" us anything, it was all from FC and materialised after we were asleep on Xmas eve. Magically of course.

TurboGirl2 · 27/11/2025 20:15

Ours all appeared under the tree Christmas Eve night and do same now as well.

ShowOfHands · 27/11/2025 20:21

No presents under the tree. Presents from us are put into sacks and put by the tree once the DC are asleep on the 24th. We see relations later on the 25th and in the days following Christmas so exchange gifts then. Stocking from FC magically appears overnight.

CactusPat · 27/11/2025 20:22

Not til Christmas Eve here (overnight) - but I have Believers. With little impulse control who would try to open the lot if they appeared early. Big FC fills the stocking and brings one gift from the wishlist and sometimes a surprise.

As a kid we got everything overnight too, then as we were older the present pile was under the tree as they got wrapped/dropped off. I like presents under the tree for a bit, I think it’s festive!

TeenToTwenties · 27/11/2025 20:23

Presents only put out after DC are in bed Xmas eve (far too much temptation otherwise) and from real people.

TinyHousemouse · 27/11/2025 20:25

We do what both our parents did: stocking of little bits, chocolates etc from Father Christmas, everything under the tree is from real people.

Tammygirl12 · 27/11/2025 20:26

Similar to you.

Father Christmas does stocking presents, left at the end of your bed. Small token gifts (wrapped in our house, different paper!!)

under the tree are presents from family and friends. Would normally put under right away but have toddler and baby as well as a primary child and I think under the tree might be too tempting this year.

spicycats · 27/11/2025 20:26

Presents all delivered by FC and appear under the tree overnight along with the stocking being filled etc.

welshweasel · 27/11/2025 20:28

Father Christmas brings the stocking. Everything else goes under the tree on Xmas Eve (to stop kids looking/feeling before then) but is labelled from whoever sent it.

As a kid we did the same but presents went under the tree as they arrived (and we used to spend hours trying to work out what they were!)

rainbow231 · 27/11/2025 20:31

Oh interesting! Same as you OP. Although maybe a slightly bigger stocking.

pleasesignthispetitionplease · 27/11/2025 20:31

@welshweasel
same as you in our house.

we loved seeing them build up and guessing what they were.

Poor mum spent hours one year wrapping all matching paper, bows, etc thinking how nice they’d all look under the tree together. Only to realise that they’d actually be farmed out to relatives and we had a mosh mash of clashing presents under our tree

BobblyBobbleHat · 27/11/2025 20:31

We put gifts for others in the family and from them under the tree. Father Christmas presents and the stocking appear overnight. We don't give dd any that are marked as from us, those are from Father Christmas.

zoemum2006 · 27/11/2025 20:33

Santa brings ONE present (wrapped in a special paper that only Santa uses). This gift is left by the fireplace. Gifts from mum and dad are put in massive stockings (huge velvet ones I bought when they were toddlers). Gift from friends are opened before Christmas (so they are fully appreciated). Gifts from grandparents are opened Christmas afternoon when they come over for dinner.

mamaduckbone · 27/11/2025 20:34

When the dc were little everything went under the tree on Christmas Eve although only stockings were direct from fc. I liked the wow factor of them coming down Christmas morning. Now they are older it's usually still Christmas Eve to be honest, but a more casual affair throughout the day rather than a late night creep around after they're in bed.

My childhood was the same as your husband’s Christmas.
With my own child I did it the way you would except I wrap the stocking presents, different paper to the rest and a bit messy because elves have tiny little hands.
My son is 23 and I don’t do stockings anymore but when I did I always added a glass bottle of coke and a
“I stopped of in insert county hereand thought you’d like this note”
An example being.. Australia and a boomerang found in a charity shop.
He still expects the glass bottle of coke at Christmas.

Family & partner presents went under the tree whenever they were wrapped. With the kids - when they were younger they went in the loft and father Christmas bought them downstairs whenever they’d finally gone to sleep but they’re late teenage/adult now so they all go under the tree. I wrapped my first presents this evening and put them under the little tree I put up in my kitchen this afternoons… (proper tree won’t be till next weekend)

jocktamsonsbairn · 27/11/2025 20:36

Stockings by the fire. Presents under the tree before Christmas are from family on friends.
Santa presents appear overnight as do presents from me. About 50/50 but Santa def uses different wrapping paper. All stocking gifts are wrapped.

Hayley1256 · 27/11/2025 20:38

Present from friends and family go under the tree when they arrive. Presents from me go under on Xmas eve when DD is asleep, Santa's presents also go under on Xmas eve when she's asleep and they go in a special sack and are wrapped in santa paper. Presents from Santa include what she's wrote on her Xmas list (no tech, mainly toys, books etc)

FunkyMonks · 27/11/2025 20:40

Ours goes under the tree Christmas Eve night when the kids are asleep usually bring them downstairs I wouldn’t trust my two if they were under the tree any sooner I know what me and my brother were like as kids poking holes in presents to find out what we had 😂😂.

Leoari · 27/11/2025 20:42

Presents from everyone else go under the tree whenever they're given. To be opened on Xmas morning. Parents don't give kids presents because Santa does that. Santa does a stocking in bedroom and lots of presents downstairs. I thought this was UK wide but ovbs not!

pleasesignthispetitionplease · 27/11/2025 20:49

It’s so weird that kids don’t cop onto how Santa is different in every house 😂

TheChosenTwo · 27/11/2025 20:53

Everything goes under the tree when it’s wrapped and whenever people drop
round before Christmas that have bought presents for the dc.
FC has only ever brought the stockings for our dc although they are big sacks, those are the only things that are hidden until Christmas Day.
Even when they were small they were pretty good, nothing was ever opened before Christmas although they’d have a little prod and squeeze - half the fun was the anticipation!

Kind of yes but also kind of no, they only really know what goes on in their own houses and it’s 2 weeks before they’re back at school, the minor details have been long forgotten by then!
