Any recommendations please?

Preferably nothing that's long winded and hard to get the hang of.

Some simple classics. Something I can play with my son that won't require too much brainwork 🤣

He's asked for some board games on his Xmas list.

Some of these modern board games are just such a faff. Especially the character monopoly versions.

Which ones are a favourite in your house?

Mine love rubix race

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/11/2025 22:28

My 6 year old likes Cluedo Junior, I think it would be too young for yours.

GrillaMilla · 26/11/2025 22:30

Othello was a favourite, simple but mesmerising, we still play at Christmas

Scrabble, just whoever got rid of their tiles first

We’ve had this for a year and not played it because I’m bamboozled by the instructions!

It's worth getting your head around them! It's a really good game. Maybe search for a YouTube video explaining how to play? Might be easier to digest than reading the instructions? It's honestly quite simple and my son could play it from age 6.

Growlybear83 · 27/11/2025 01:05

At that age my daughter loved Stratego and the London Game. And unfortunately Monopoly 😆

One of the ones we love playing in our home is Frustration - it's so simple, and yet, so annoying when you lose your place on the board! Very old school too!
We've got Ticket to Ride and, although it's simple for most ages, I still can't win at the game - the good thing about it is that it doesn't take long to complete!
Uno Extreme is great fun.

Tintackedsea · 27/11/2025 13:20

My kids are 8-12 and they like:

Qwirkle
Ok Play
Cobra Paw
Catan
Ticket to Ride (Europe)
Carscassone
Yahtzee
Gas Out
Geist Blitz
Backgammon
Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza
Traitors Tide
Herd Mentality
Scabby Queen
Shithead (although we call it Skibbidi Head!)

Labyrinth is brill.
Codewords is the best game ever.
Ghost castle obviously.
And we are playing a lot of The Gothic Game at the moment which we found in a charity shop - basically you are trying to kill every other other person on the board - and its fab.

Battleships

Tryingatleast · 27/11/2025 14:29

Dobble, ludo, risk (might be a bit long for a 9 year old though)

BreatheAndFocus · 27/11/2025 14:37

Labyrinth is very popular with my 9 year old! I enjoy it too 😊 The games don’t take too long so it’s easy to have a quick game or, if more time, a competition of 3 games or whatever. It’s also quick to set up..

Cluedo Junior and original Cluedo are great and, actually, I think the original version is just as easy to understand for a child of that age.

Ok play is a good game. Good one to chuck in a bag too if you’re heading out.

Carcasonne - looks complicated but isn’t at all, and is satisfying because it does involve some strategy rather than just luck.

I second this. It’s a great game

ToadRage · 27/11/2025 21:17

Junior scrabble and mousetrap were favourites when I was kid, when my cousins were little they ask for one called Don't wake Dad, recently i saw an advert for one that involves hanging plastic knickers on a mini washing line, looks like a similar concept to the old Buckaroo.

Power Hungry Pets

DD got it as a gift last year and it is pretty much the only game we have played since. It's quick and so simple to learn.
