Board game for a 9 year old.

Any recommendations please?

Preferably nothing that's long winded and hard to get the hang of.

Some simple classics. Something I can play with my son that won't require too much brainwork 🤣

He's asked for some board games on his Xmas list.

Some of these modern board games are just such a faff. Especially the character monopoly versions.

Which ones are a favourite in your house?

We have a Cluedo game called Rivals that's specifically for 2 players. It's easier than normal Cluedo but more of a challenge than the Junior one!

We also like Block Party, Articulate for Kids, Payday, Game of Life, Six Second Scribbles, Labyrinth (we have a Pokémon one) and The World Game.

North87 · 26/11/2025 19:21

Game of life, my 9 year old absolutely loves it. Bonus is that it takes about half the time of a game of monopoly.

CraftyGin · 26/11/2025 19:23

Ticket to Ride

craigth162 · 26/11/2025 19:27

Agree with cluedo rivals
Also outsmarted or any of the logo type games. Lots of versions.
Trivial pursuit family edition. Different qs for kids and adults.

hnwis · 26/11/2025 19:29

Sorry! (That’s the name of the game) - a 1980s classic. My kids loved it!

Rainbow898 · 26/11/2025 19:31

Agree with all the others suggesting Labyrinth - it’s a real favourite here.
They don’t enjoy Game of Life unfortunately. I’m looking at getting Cludeo as I loved that as a kid and I keep seeing Ticket to Ride recommended but I need to look into it as never heard of it.

I don’t know if this game is still even made anymore but my dad gave me our old family board game called Masterpiece and my 10 & 8 yr old love it. It’s an art auction game which involves bidding on paintings without knowing their worth until you have it - the kids think it’s hilarious when they sell on a forgery 😂

gingerbreadmumm · 26/11/2025 19:33

Ludo? If you don’t already have it - simple but loads of fun x

Moonnstars · 26/11/2025 19:50

Ticket to ride London (quicker than the Europe/main version)

My 9 year old likes Cluedo (normal version, they outgrew the kids version a while ago).

If they have ever watched Race across the world there is a board game based on that which mine like.

I like Qwirkle, that's quite easy to play.

namechange272727 · 26/11/2025 20:58

Yes also agree with everyone saying ticket to ride

Toastess · 26/11/2025 21:03

Another vote each for Ticket to Ride and Qwirkle!

Tosserneighbour · 26/11/2025 21:04

Another vote for Labyrinth!! We all enjoy playing it in our house, adults and children.

Mh67 · 26/11/2025 21:08

Ludo

opencecilgee · 26/11/2025 21:11

Cluedo junior is really basic. Get standard cluedo. Our 7 year old can play it

LastNovember · 26/11/2025 21:14

Ticket to Ride, Qwirkle and Splendor.

Monopoly is never the answer…

SparkysNightmare · 26/11/2025 21:24

Latice is really popular in our house. Simple rules and doesn't go on for too long!

Beamur · 26/11/2025 21:28

Labyrinth is a great game.
Tabula the Roman game is also very good
Articulate
Not sure if he's a bit young for Chameleon but that's a good one too

AquaShark · 26/11/2025 21:44

Family with 1 x 9 yo boy. We play lots of games.

Exploding kittens & monopoly deal are our current go to card games. Uno also good.

For proper board games we enjoy ticket to ride, game of life, cludeo junior, hotel, 7 wonders duel.

If your son likes the bunny vs monkey style books, there is a new game out by Jamie Smart - Hero Slam. No idea how good it is, but i have it for my son's xmas stocking.

JillMW · 26/11/2025 21:54

Upwords is a good one. Quicker than scrabble but the way the scoring is done younger children can often beat older ones or adults. We have a lot of kids visit and they all seem to enjoy a game and ask next time they come.

Runnersandtoms · 26/11/2025 21:58

We like Labyrinth, ticket to ride, articulate family or kids (needs 4 players). Herd mentality is great for 4 or more (the more the better). Exploding kittens seems complicated but it's actually pretty easy, don't read the instructions just start playing and read the cards. Also Uno and Dobble (both have a million versions) are firm favourites for a quick game). Pictionary or Creationary also good (but need at least 3). Colour Brain also good for 4 or more.

NameChange30 · 26/11/2025 15:45

We like Ticket to Ride First Journey, which is suitable for younger than 9, and I think a 9 year old could probably get the hang of the normal Ticket to Ride.

We’ve had this for a year and not played it because I’m bamboozled by the instructions!

Ghhhn · 26/11/2025 22:10

One of the Monopoly special editions.

Becs51 · 26/11/2025 22:16

Card games we love mantis and exploding kittens, both great fun.
if you can find on eBay a couple of older games, monopoly empire (NOTHING like normal monopoly) is absolutely brilliant! Really easy and takes about 20 minutes. Our son is 11 but he played with an 8 year old friend recently who made his mum track it down because he loved it too! Also ravine but that’s much harder to come by and you need 3 players.

captainoctopus · 26/11/2025 22:18

HeckMeck is an excellent game, very easy to learn but interesting to play over and over for adults and children. My grandson (age 9) is a whizz at it.

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 26/11/2025 22:22

Similar age and likes -
Cluedo
Bears v babies
Rainbow pirates - sounds complicated on first read but it isn't
Happy salmon is fun for 4 players
Cobra paw is lots of fun
Draughts
Ludo
Someone mentioned race across the world- ny 9yr old hasnt seen it but really enjoys the game. It's fun as depending on the cards you choose you have a different advantage each time

Shouldvegonewithalex · 26/11/2025 22:25

Catan - although technically you can't play with 2 weeks do and it just makes it easier/quicker so perfect for him to learn

King of Tokyo
Backgammon

Also Machi Koro and Skyjo
