Xmas gifts I hate receiving

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

Oh god, not the Panettone.

Its like eating disposable maternity pants.

🤣😆 I have to say that it’s one of the Christmas things I genuinely like, but it does have to be a slice of a good quality big one, not one of the cheap dry miniature ones!

money/vouchers... no thought has been put in to it..

I love getting money and/or vouchers, particularly book vouchers so that I can load up my kindle/Kobo etc.

So for me that doesn't apply. They are my preferred option.

HelenaWaiting · 24/11/2025 15:51

One year I got a mixing bowl and a wooden spoon. It wasn't even given ironically.

CoastalCalm · 24/11/2025 15:52

Every year I get a big box of Thornton’s chocolate and I really don’t like them - husband eats them but I miss out on a gift as a result

CoralOP · 24/11/2025 15:55

What is with people buying pj's far too small, I'm a size 14 and got a size 6 pair from my aunty last year. I told her I was nowhere near a size 6 and she said don't be silly of course they will fit...🙄 stupid waste of money, this is the same woman who bought me a bag of asda bakery cookies that were 17 days out of date by the time I opened them on Xmas day!

I am very easy to buy for though, I love all sorts, socks, smellies, choccies, anything really but my MIL has unfortunately got a lot worse at present buying the last few years (no money worries whatsoever).

All females in the family will get the same, usually because she has found in severely discounted on some website, think slippers that you can't get your feet into, socks where the print is upside down, cardigan where one arm is loads longer than the other etc.
This year she has discovered Temu, she keeps showing me her new clothes and they are the shiniest, cheapest, AI looking printed clothes possible....so I'm pretty sure I'll be getting something like that.
....and she insists everyone gather round and watch each person open one gift at a time to see the reaction. I'm pretty good at acting pleased thankfully. Merry Xmas everyone!

Xatz63 · 24/11/2025 16:00

Those cheap nail varnish packs in crappy colours and would need 10 coats to show any sort of colour .
Bath sets baylis and Harding or dove .
Xmas socks .
Lastly anything Disney .

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/11/2025 16:02

I'm quite poor and have just retired. So ANY consumables, food or toiletries are quite welcome here! Don't care about the quality, I need to be clean and fed, so everything will get used.

For me, the worst things to give me are things related to what I do (I write books and I ride horses) that are aimed at people just starting out. There is absolutely no point whatsoever in giving a book of 'writing prompts' to someone who is already on a three book a year deal with a publisher or cushions with horses on them 'because they ride, so they must love horses'.

that's actually very kind, the giver doesn't trust himself and let you choose something you really want. What's wrong with that?

Vouchers might feel better than cash, but because you can never reach the exact amount, they know you have to spend a bit yourself, so some people prefer giving you cash

So much better than things that end up in the bin!

This is why I buy my own presents!

Yep, I have both my Xmas and birthday presents ready to take with me when I visit DS later this week. He’s broke and my DH doesn’t thank me for buying my own presents so I buy for DS to gift back to me. I also buy his father’s present for him to gift.
I give my other DC strong hints what I would like but that doesn’t stop them buying toiletries, which used to be my favourite, and now, my skin, can’t tolerate.
My DH doesn’t like candles, due to the fire risk, so, these, and the toiletries go into raffles.

GFBurger · 24/11/2025 16:10

Candles, photo frames, mugs, plants, scarves.

I’d really rather have a Cadbury’s selection box than any of that!

weareallqueens · 24/11/2025 16:11

I LOVE wine. And no one ever gets me wine. 😂

Iliketulips · 24/11/2025 16:12

Tins quality street and roses. No one else in our household will touches them (usually receive 2-5 tins - or are they plastic containers now!), and I only used to eat some of them (avoid now for health reasons, although I might stretch to a Lindor chocolate). For this reason, we told others we had given up chocolate last Christmas - luckily they listened.

Agree, not Bayliss and Hardling - it's too drying for my skin.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 24/11/2025 16:16

Bayliss and Harding. It feels cheap, is over scented and it causes my skin to react.

For the same price you can get Dove or Nivea toiletry sets which I like and I will use. I keep dropping hints about how much I love Dove and Nivea. But nope, every year I get the Bayliss and Harding and it ends up going to the charity shop.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/11/2025 16:19

I am really easy to buy for at Christmas (literally the clue is in my name!) there is no chocolate too cheap for me to eat, love a scented candle or some bath stuff so all good. But...in the last few years a family member has decided to gift all the women in the family identical clothing, from the eldest in their eighties to the youngest in their teens. Last year it was Kimono's which all went in the charity bin after they were put on for an obligatory photo. We've offered to stop doing presents if she'd prefer but she insisted she couldn't do us out of our matchies 🤦. So we're stuck with it.

Applesonthelawn · 24/11/2025 16:19

This thread just highlights why there is way too much spurious and wasteful gift giving at Christmas. We should all just scale it back by stopping a lot of the gift giving. Concentrate on having a lovely time catching up with people rather than buying/giving/recycling stuff no-one wants. Far less stress, far better for the environment.

Any home made "treats" such as biscuits, cakes etc. Ditto candles or any other home made craft stuff.

I have a friend who always gifts home made skin and body care accompanied by a home made card with a meant to be funny hand drawn cartoon on it. I appreciate the thought and the work that has gone into it but I never use the stuff and the card does not even raise a smile. guess i am a horrible person

How good is the product and does it look nice? I'm a bit fascinated by people who gift home made stuff like this (neither me or my f&f do) because for me I'd have to be churning out some amazing quality stuff or be a bit deluded in my ability to give it as gift's to people.

ohyesido · 24/11/2025 16:29

Can never have too much body scrub.

i hate getting scented candles, I don’t use them because I have a parrot and the fumes could harm him. I still seem to get a very boring candle in my secret Santa every year though

JoshLymanSwagger · 24/11/2025 16:29

Crap I don't want:
All bath/shower stuff, candles, flowers and plants, alcohol/chocolates/sweets, clothes/shoes/bags, anything "domestic" - which is really for the house (e.g. mugs, "naice" glasses, teapot etc) or which requires a plug -, jewellery I have enough that I don't wear, books...

Yes, I'm a fussy bitch hard to buy for, but I'd rather you save your money.

Or buy me a sponsored donkey...or wait until spring and buy me a plant for the garden, or maybe some fat balls for the sparrows and robins that call every day.

I don't need random crap that will end up in the wheelie bin/landfill.

edited to add, anything handmade or baked will end up in landfill too.

KoalaBlue1 · 24/11/2025 16:30

Charlie perfume …. Received it from hubby every year for about 5 years.
Finally told him, I don’t like it any more (never did)
Must have been too excited in my thanks in the early years. Thought he was on a winner.

ohyesido · 24/11/2025 16:30

Home made stuff is fun though

shouldicontactthisperson · 24/11/2025 16:36

Tubs of sweets (unless it’s Heroes)
Family Circle biscuits
Bayliss & Harding/Soap & Glory sets

And it’s not for me but I find the Lynx sets that MIL always sends DH and DS irritating. Same with David Beckham sets or similar. They never use them, they smell dreadful and end up going in our foodbank donations.

It is gloopy and she just presents it in any old left over jar or rinsed out container. One year she gave me some home made face crean in an old Neal's yard jar with the original labels still on it and for a few seconds I was really excited as I love Neal's Yard stuff then I saw the gift label with the hand writtten instructions on it.

saffglass · 24/11/2025 16:38

Can I ask if people don't like certain things like smellies, sweets, wine, mugs, plants, homemade stuff, clothes, bags, jewellery etc. Do you actually tell the people who are buying for you this and give an indication of what you would prefer?
