Xmas gifts I hate receiving

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

I have a friend (male) who does all his Christmas shopping in the January sales.
The thing is, he just buys random stuff then decides who to give it to. He doesn't specifically buy for the person he's giving the gift to.
He's not hard up. He has three holidays a year and a new car every two years.
I think he just likes a bargain!

Reading this thread (and speaking from experience!) I really don't know why ANYONE buys people toiletry gift sets (Dove, Nivea, Sanctuary etc). Pretty much everyone uses specific products for their skin for a reason!

Usually on a 3 for 2 at boots. Ppl think they are getting a good deal but they ain't. Its over priced.

ChristmasSparkles1 · 24/11/2025 15:15

Bath stuff. I read the back of one and it is literally a toxic sludge of petrochemicals, turns the water purple and has an unidentified scent. Why would anyone want to soak in that.

My sister usually buys me an item of clothing two sizes too small, always something that i wouldn't be seen dead in anyway. She loves a bargain and starts picking up stuff in January, so no chance of returning it. She has plenty of money btw. My other sister buys stuff for herself and if she doesn't like it passes it on, usually skincare or clothes that dont fit, she is also very well off. I also get tat and bath stuff that I don't use, i honestly i would be perfectly happy if I never receive another gift in my life.

My auntie used to wrap up all my cousins unwanted clothing and give to me as presents for b'day or xmas. I hated it because my cousins were so much smaller than I was. Why is it so hard to buy something that actually may fit?!

money/vouchers... no thought has been put in to it..

I always hated that for (younger) children, though I might be biased because my daughter does specifically love opening gifts. Even worse when it isn't even money in a card and someone just transferring money to a bank account on the day and sending you a text to let you know. Come on man.

AlltheHedgehogsontheWall · 24/11/2025 15:18

I have a lot of unopened hand cream. Whenever I put it on it makes my hands slippery and cold and then my rings fall off, so I never wear it. Also perfume gives me migraines.

Apart from that, I usually appreciate whatever is bought for me.

What I don't love so much is massive, easily broken or noisy items given to my 5 yo who will never play with them but protest vehemently if we try to donate them. Or in the case of the noisy ones, play with them ALL THE TIME.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 24/11/2025 15:19

My parents have system where the give us a wodge of cash, and my mum buys a complete miscellany from junk shops.

Some of this stuff turns out to be very glam and stylish (vintage wine glasses, vases, silverware). Some of it turns out to be heinous tat with a funny smell that hangs around long after the item has been banished to a charity shop.

However it kind of works better than MIL's system which is to demand a list, then to buy half of it, whilst also buying a lot of expensive unwanted items.

I charity shop equal amounts from each of them,but at least not much is wasted cash from my parents.

I was once given size 22 pyjamas. I have never been anywhere near a size 22 and in fact at that time I was probably a 10-12. I was also given a random huge dressing gown one year.

That's almost insulting! Awful 😁but a little amusing to hear about it. The rotters!

This is exactly what my sister does.

chipsticksmammy · 24/11/2025 15:26

Anything that can be bought from the big table at the front of a garden centre.

Paper diaries.

Anything smelly.

A new 'Bag for Life'. Christ that was a depressing year.

Anything 'foody', it all gets binned. Buy me some nice, plain olive oil, or a box of sea salt.

Pyjamas, they are always wrong. Even though I live in long sleeved cotton pjs, with a shirt style top. I am never changing.

Zov · 24/11/2025 15:27

This is my favourite Christmas gift list @JammyRed 😆

ThatNaiceMember · 24/11/2025 15:28

I always ask for people only to get me wine, chocolates or candles because there's genuinely not much I want. I don't really mind if it's cheap as long as it's in that area. I really don't want ornaments or things I need to keep or display 🤣

PeonyPatch · 24/11/2025 15:28

Bath bombs (I hate them!)
Cheap perfume.
Alcohol. Especially random stuff that I will never drink like tiramisu Irish coffee liqueur.

mcmuffin22 · 24/11/2025 15:31

My mum is lovely but she gets into this manic state in December when she just goes a bit nuts and buys tat for the sake of making up numbers..
My teenage dd ends up with stuff that is far too young for her (eg. Books she would have read 4 years ago), garish or 'fun'.
I wear mainly black but heaven forbid she would buy me black gloves. They have to be in a fun colour.
Then we get strange gift sets or worse...things she has found at craft fairs. I would love a John lewis voucher or a garden centre voucher. It's tricky.

Thebeehiveflys · 24/11/2025 15:32

Large paper calendars for my kitchen, or worse a paper diary (went paperless in 2008), hand cream (already have a drawer full), those 1 for all tokens (never get around to spending them), neck scarves from the garden centre (I’m only late 40s 😆) cheap tights (I have a job where I wear tights but I’m fussy), cheap cocktail or coffee syrups (I drink neither), those piri piri mini sauces you get in the Boots gift section - they will lurk in the back of my cupboard until next year before I finally chuck them out!
Man that felt good to say that out loud!!!
I would instantly donate all of the above by January 2nd, bar the sauces which I would keep “just in case”!
I'm quite quite sure a few of my gifts have ended up in donation bags too - isn’t it daft when you think about it?!

sesquipedalophobia · 24/11/2025 15:33

Gifts that have been 're-gifted' which I know because the person gifting it I know for sure wouldn't like it either. I wouldn't mind if it was re-gifted, only it's always something Xmas themed like ornaments, decor, glasses/ mugs/ plates of which none is useful to me. Never goes to waste though, as I donate so that someone, somewhere gets to choose it because they like/need it and the charity gets the money!

Lastfroginthebox · 24/11/2025 15:34

RaininSummer · 24/11/2025 10:53

Those horrid Lindor chocolates. Anything from Avon. Sets with those plastic shower scrub things.

I'll happily accept your unwanted Lindor!

Lastfroginthebox · 24/11/2025 15:38

Virtually any gift set - almost guaranteed to have at least one thing I won't use. Scented candles. Any jewellery. (I never wear jewellery and yet two close friends have given me bracelets.)

catontheironingboard · 24/11/2025 15:40

Things I don’t like:
Any bath stuff or toiletries as I’m allergic to most of them;
Chocolates (I don’t have a sweet tooth and mostly don’t eat them);
Any clothes or house stuff, especially scented things like reed diffusers; mugs (we have far too many already).

Things I do like:
Wine (preferably French or Italian and a decent red);
Homemade jams and chutneys - all you chutney refuseniks, please send your homemade chutneys my way!
Pannetone;
Books;
Events (eg concert tickets);
Cocktails.

To be honest, I rarely get anything I don’t like any more, as my work doesn’t do secret Santa, and my parents and siblings and the few friends who I do exchange presents with either give money, pre-arrange things in advance or they know my taste pretty well!

My siblings and I buy mostly for the kids, and then exchange edible things like wine and cocktails for the most part. MIL can go a bit rogue, but now we’ve encouraged her to just do £5 gifts for adults, so she normally gets me a gin miniature with sone holly on it, or some Ferrero Rocher (which then DD and DH eat).

chipsticksmammy · 24/11/2025 15:41

Oh god, not the Panettone.

Its like eating disposable maternity pants.

canklesmctacotits · 24/11/2025 15:42

Candles - my SIL buys the nasty, cheap-smelling ones.

Whatever my MIL gets me - it's normally half of a multi-pack of things (tea towels, table mats, shopping tote) that she splits between me and her other DIL.

Toiletries - my DH always buys crazy expensive stuff but I don't use skincare beyond supermarket cleanser and moisturizer. Actually, maybe he's trying to tell me something 🤔

chipsticksmammy · 24/11/2025 15:43

Anything hand made from a craft fair, has to be on this list surely.

Oh and those tik tok gifts of stuff from B&M in a 99p Christmas glass.

PonkyPonky · 24/11/2025 15:44

I would love the socks but god I hate smellies or posh chocolates. I like Cadbury’s or galaxy chocolate, certainly nothing with any kind of liqueur in it 🤢

I was given a Dove toiletry set a few years ago, and I spurned it for about 2 years, thinking I would regift it... and then one day I ran out of body wash and it was great!
