Seen as I’ve been gently persuaded to step in to Christmas. What’s everyone’s top 5 Christmas songs? Just a bit of lighthearted fun…

  1. I believe in Father Christmas - Greg lake
  2. fairy tale of New York - the pogues ft Kirsty McCall
  3. last Christmas - wham
  4. do they know it’s Christmas - band aid ( original, the others just don’t hit the same)
  5. a spaceman came travelling - Chris de burgh

HM - wonderful Christmas time - Paul McCartney, it just gives me the biggest kick of nostalgia. Reminds me of spending my childhood growing up up in a pub.

4.O Holy Night - Don't mind who sings it just love the song but for some reason guys sing it better!!
5.A bit of Rudolf the red nosed reindeer is always lighted and fun!

Under the Tree - Kelly Clarkson

Do They Know It’s Christmas - love the original but do also like the naughties version with Busted, Will Young etc

Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin Stevens

Merry Christmas - Ed Sheeran and Elton John

2000 miles by the pretenders

Merry Christmas (Please Don't Call) by the Bleachers

If you haven't heard it, it's really really good, especially if you listen with your earphones in. And listen out for the cheery note at the end 😊

Every year around this time DS2 (20) and I start our annual discussion about the best Christmas songs.

Usually after a couple of drinks, we start to watch any music channels showing Christmas songs and try to reach an agreement on our top 10.

We actually drunkenly agreed to get a white board with the sole purpose of writing it all out once and for all, however I’m yet to buy one.

The only one we definitely agree on is Fairytale of New York at no. 1.

May have to crack open the Baileys tonight and start the discussion argument 😄

MoonBugs · 14/11/2025 17:03

Can’t decide the order but mine are:

Last Christmas- Wham,
Christmas (Baby please come home)- by either Michael buble or darlene love; equally like both versions,
I wish it could be Christmas everyday- Wizard,
Do they know it’s Christmas?- original band aid one only of course,
Fairytale of new York- The Pogues

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 14/11/2025 17:07

YorkieTheRabbit · 14/11/2025 17:29

No particular order
December will be magic - Kate Bush
I believe in Father Christmas- Greg Lake
Fairy Tale of New York
2000 miles - Pretenders
Stop the Cavalry

SailingAwayAgain · 14/11/2025 17:36

Merry Xmas Everybody - Slade
Step into Christmas - Elton John
I wish it Could be Christmas Every Day - Wizzard
Rocking Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
Another Rock 'n Roll Christmas - (unfortunately, I think that was Gary Glitter).

WilfredsPies · 14/11/2025 17:45

Have yourself a merry little Christmas - Judy Garland
Silent Night (either the Sinead O Connor or elderly Frank Sinatra version)
White Christmas - Bing Crosby
The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
Santa Baby - Eartha Kit

I didn’t realise I was quite as retro. If I did a top ten, there would be some 70s and 80s in there too.

User214263 · 14/11/2025 18:34

Step into Christmas - Elton John
Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
Power of Love - Frankie goes to Hollywood
Last Christmas - Wham
Stop the Cavalry - Jona Lewie

FatLarrysBanned · 14/11/2025 18:40

All of of the above and throwing "Keeping the Dream Alive" by Freiheit in the ring as well. I always thought it was Paul McCartney singing it when I was a kid. 😆

MaudlinGazebo · 14/11/2025 18:43

I LOVE Jamie Cullums Christmas album, especially Hang Your Lights. But they are all great
Christmas Wrapping - absolutely brilliant song!!

Mikart · 14/11/2025 18:45

Must be Santa Bob Dylan
Black xmas Poly Styrene
Silent Night Simon and Garfunkel
Feliz Navidad Jose Feliciano
Hang your lights Jamie Cullam

goudacheese · 14/11/2025 18:53

Winter Wonderland - Johnny Mathis
Rocking around the Xmas tree - Brenda Lee
Last Xmas - Wham
I wish it could be Xmas - Wizzard
Christmas Lights - Coldplay

cornbunting · 14/11/2025 19:05

Carol of the bells
The Coventry carol
God rest ye merry gentlemen
Twinkly lights - Bob's Burgers
Maybe next year - Jenny Owen Youngs

I love traditional carols (despite being a non-believer), novelty crap, and everything in between! This top five seems to have turned out rather on the gloomy side, but honestly whittling it down to five is impossible, ask me again in an hour and it'll probably be different 😂

Carol of the Bells (From "Home Alone" Soundtrack)

John Williams · Home Alone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) · Song · 1990

Do they know it's Christmas - Band Aid.
I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake.

HedgeWitchOfTheWest · 14/11/2025 19:43

  2. Dominic The Donkey - Lou Monte
  3. All I Want For Christmas Is You - My Chemical Romance
