Am just putting some lists of films and books together to put me in the Christmas mood and to enjoy through out December. So what are your favourites that I can add to my lists?

OP posts:

Christmas Chronicals

Stompythedinosaur · 07/11/2025 11:53

My favourite Christmassy books are Winter Solstice and The Dark Is Rising, as a throwback to my childhood.

I love a Christmassy book! I listen to a lot on audible.

Ladies in Black. Book by Madeleine St John and made into a movie by her old friend, Bruce Beresford. Both immensely charming.

XelaM · 07/11/2025 12:28

It's a Wonderful Life has to be the best Christmas film of all time

LaMarschallin · 07/11/2025 12:30

Jilly Cooper's "How to Survive Christmas" is a must for JC lovers.

XelaM · 07/11/2025 13:03

Just to add Miracle on 34th Street - used to be my daughter's favourite Christmas eve film 🎄

Wigtopia · 07/11/2025 13:05

Rare exports in a good alternative Christmas film. Maybe not for super young ones. I’d recommend watching the trailer before deciding if kids can watch depending on ages.

Laurie Lee's "Village Christmas".

Christmas Chronicals

I'm guessing this poster means the film, but there's also a lovely children's story that has a chapter per day for advent called Christmas Chronicles.

FlowersInPots · 07/11/2025 13:45

The Xmas Factor by Annie Sanders is a nice, easy Christmas read.

I agree with the Muppets Christmas Carol and Miracle on 34th Street.
If you have dc I would add Arthur Christmas and the newest Grinch.

Iocanepowder · 07/11/2025 14:00

Guilty pleasure is a Castle for Christmas on Netflix.

Failing that, Die Hard.

CatPawprints · 07/11/2025 14:03

J R R Tolkien's Letters From Father Christmas is an absolutely beautiful book to dip in to over Christmas. He wrote letters to his children from Father Christmas for 22 years, with illustrations and funny stories about what Father Christmas gets up to during the year.

It is the definition of charming

GrumpySparkler · 07/11/2025 16:12

Muppets Christmas carol is a classic. I always watch it after I've done the tree. Obviously Dickens is a great read too.
There were some "Gone Wrong" plays on the iPlayer last year that we enjoyed watching with the kids. I think they were A Christmas Carol and Peter Pan

I read a great book last Christmas called "The Secret Christmas" by Anna Abney, about a family celebrating Christmas when it was banned under Cromwell.
I love a spooky Christmas story and really rate "The Haunting Season" and "The Winter Spirits" which are both collections of short stories based around Christmas. I have the third one to read this year.
I've also got "The Dead of Winter" by Sarah Clegg and "Twelve Days of Christmas" by Susan Stokes-Chapman (she also contributed to the short story collections mentioned above) for this year.
Quite fancy reading "Small Things Like These" by Clare Keegan and I'm eyeing up "The Christmas Card Crime and Other Stories" from my local library.

Tryingatleast · 07/11/2025 16:15

Any Christmas books by Sarah Morgan, Jaimie Admans, B R Maycock, Anita Faulkner, Tracy Bloom or Jodie Homer. They’re all light romances, all uplit

Tryingatleast · 07/11/2025 16:16

Ps I want to read Wintering, might be heavy but it’s on my list.

ihavespoken · 07/11/2025 16:16

+1 for The Dark is Rising - I shall add it back to my audiobook library ready for December

XelaM · 07/11/2025 17:32

I've never seen the Muppets Christmas Carol, but is it really better than It's a Wonderful Life?

Both equally good in different ways.
The box of delights by John Masefield. Definitely The Dark is Rising. I'm listening to it just now.
If you have you have young children, then
Christmas on Exeter Street and Lucy and Tom's Christmas.

LittleBanana · 07/11/2025 18:34

“That Christmas” on Netflix

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 07/11/2025 18:49

I'm a Dark is Rising fan. I also reread The Father Christmas letters and A Christmas Carol every year.

But my favourite Christmas book is Antonia Forest's End of Term. It's description of a Nativity in the Cathedral is very moving.

SMC1984 · 07/11/2025 18:54

Skipping Christmas by john Grisham

Coatsoff42 · 07/11/2025 18:55

12 dates of Christmas. A very hallmark movies Groundhog Day kind of Christmas film, but really well done. Perfect for wrapping presents or writing cards at the same time. DD loves it!
