just to put forward a different perspective on the weights, I found the adjustable dumbell/barbell sets infuriating. I just wanted to go between different exercises without having to stop and faff around unscrewing the bolts and adding/removing weights every time. so much worse when you're trying to superset stuff.
I ended up selling mine (at a significant loss) and re-buying a selection of individual silicone hex weights. Yes more of a pain to store but worth it for reduced frustration.

Oh the ones we have are not such a faff - you put them in the case thing and turn the dial round, then the relevant weight attaches or detaches itself. I agree the individual ones are much more pleasing but, depending on the range of weights you want, (ours need to serve 5ft me, 5ft10 DH and 6ft 2 young man DSS!) it does work out more expensive.

I’m very tempted for a 9yr old boy but don’t want him to think it too babyish. I would buy him the ‘proper’ set but am unsure if he’d be supervised properly. He’s a lovely, responsible only child so no younger siblings to worry about. What do you think?

My B and M had chocolate matchmakers for £1 a box when I went. I think RRP is £2 these days. Mint, orange and salted caramel. Mint had almost sold out at mine. I bought a box of each for fillers, will try to resist eating them before Christmas!

Yes the same one, I did buy it in 2020 so the background is yellow rather than white but from what I can see the case and the ‘arrows’ are identical, my girls were 12 and 14 back then and we first discovered the set at cubs/scouts ( can’t remember which) when one of the leaders set it up as an activity.

@BionicEar going against the flow here but 5 years ago when DS had the same request we bought him a TRX suspension trainer set (like this https://amzn.eu/d/4cfxcrw ) a door mounted pull-up bar (like this https://amzn.eu/d/2YlDQtw ) and a set of resistance bands (like this https://amzn.eu/d/5jP98qp ). All have been well used over the last few years and have definitely made a difference. He’s never been a gym-goer but works out at home most days.
