This post is a work in process and if you have any links you’d like to share or would be good to add then please do let me know. The general consensus for the thread is to share any bargainous links, ideas and/or discount codes or information. No affiliate links (is that the right word?) And any referral links to the separate thread linked below. This is a warm, friendly, kind and cosy corner of mn filled with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate - let’s keep it that way!

If you have any referral links then please post on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7 and share around the joy/referral perks.

DS14 has asked for some weights for Christmas.

Can anyone recommend weighs that would be suitable for a waif teen boy? Think he’s hoping it will turn him into a tall burly man! 😂

As he’ll be a beginner, are there any weights that would be suitable for him? Wanting something that is reasonably priced, given that I’m not sure how committed he will be long term.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hex rubber coated are my preference - one pair easy to store, more need a rack. Teen DD has used 2 x 7.5kg mostly but moving up to 10kg now at a similar age. Granted she uses them in the gym.

Brilliant find, thank you! I have had this vanity case before and it's really well made and looks good on my dressing table. Have bought for daughters and a wee treat for me 🙂

hey

My DS has recently got into making hot chocolates for himself - are the hotel chocolate velvetisers worth the money or is there a decent one, cheaper? do the actually heat the milk or just stir it?

thanks

Yes! Ours is 2 years old and used daily. My children can use it independently, including my 7 year old. You can use the fancy chocolate flakes, which are delicious, but the powder works just as well.

Thanks for sharing, a lot of the Polly Pocket sets are in the prime day deal, have bought a couple for family members!

Does anyone know of a boys version to Polly Pocket? Thinking they would be ideal for my 4YO.

Thanks

I remember my brother having some, I think they were called Mighty Max. I have no idea if they still exist!

I have this one from John Lewis, I’m sure the velvetiiser makes beautiful hot chocolate but this one was £39 and goes in the dishwasher.

Can anyone recommend decent skincare for acne prone teenage DS? He’s been using bulldog and tried MooGoo but no improvement as yet!

I think there's specific threads on Mumsnet for skincare (probably also teen skincare). I'd probably ask there first and then come back for advice on how to get a bargain. That said I think Cerave is meant to be quite effective. My now 13yo DS needed a prescription strength cream - used it for a few weeks and no problem since

Thankyou, I didn’t realise there was a specific section for this on mumsnet! I’ll have a look

I’m in Ireland and went to buy the Ted Baker sets in Boots €42😡

Bezzi · 08/10/2025 08:22

@hugsandpugs That CeraVe blemish control is on Amazon prime deal at the moment for under £9. Not got personal experience but my niece uses it and she seems to know what’s she’s doing with this sort of thing!

NancyCarey · 08/10/2025 08:27

@hugsandpugs my teen has sensitive skin and cerave was not good at all for him but the best thing we’ve tried is the Face Facts range which you can get very cheaply from Tesco and often Home Bargains. I’m a skincare junkie and really investigated the ingredients and the Ceramide range is so good that I’m now using some of it myself. The serum, moisturiser and cleanser are all only a few pounds each and they are fab. We’ve stocked up on all of them now as my son and daughter use all three.

so it isn’t fancy for a gift but they do all come boxed so you could make a hamper or whatever. If you manage to get it from somewhere like Home Bargains, the serum and moisturiser are less then £2 each and the big cleaner is about £3 I think. However, they are not too much more at Tesco.

it is the green and white boxes you’re looking for.

google the Face Facts ceramide range if you are interested - the ingredients all check out.

SugarCookieMonster · 08/10/2025 08:39

@RestingGrinchFace1 Smyths have an Elf (movie) Polly Pocket-esque toy available for pre-order. I think it’s released in November.

imnottoofussed · 08/10/2025 08:39

Just to counter the velvetiser positivity. We don’t find it easy to clean or quick at all.

ours always needs a scrub after especially the whisk as that doesn’t always get clean after doing the water and washing up liquid run. I have to use a small bottle brush to get that clean.

also you’re stood there twice as long once waiting for it to make the drink and then again waiting for it to clean.

so you end up either leaving your drink to go a bit colder or drinking it stood up in the kitchen.

It annoys me greatly that the jug isn’t submersible. I’d really like to just chuck it in the sink and wash it.

ive not checked the newer one to see what if any improvements might have been made.

i bought dd a different one from procook but haven’t tried it as it’s a gift

Something very gentle like cerave, or if you want to go a bit more on trend, one of the Korean brands - my teen likes byoma and the ingredients tend to be good. I bought them the Korean edit from boots and they loved that, if you’re looking for a gift. £35 and came in a lovely box. I found the ingredients tended to be on the gentler moisturising rather than stripping side.

Having been through acne, I’d go for medication from GP plus skincare that helps maintain the skin barrier. Or if you’re talking about occasional breakouts rather than acne, I’d go for very gentle cleaning and moisturising skincare. Cerave isn’t very cool, but it’s quality and nourishing and recommended by our dermatologist.

There’s 20% off Tu clothing at Sainsbury’s and Lidl are starting their wooden toy sale on Thursday I think. If you get their app you can get 20% off.

I know this thread is usually about gift bargains but Sports Direct/Frasers have heavily discounted christmas Decs at the moment. Lots of Gisela Graham...which is pricey usually.

Can anyone please recommend some headphones for a 13 year old that will connect to a keyboard? I'm assuming it'll need to be wired audio jack connection. Budget around £20-30. Thanks!
