I have an 18 year old and 22 year old and wondered what those of you with similar age children spend on presents for them?

I think it depends on how much you can afford. I would say that my parents roughly spend about £500 on each of us now, so 4 adult children. We give them our wish lists. My mum will usually buy everything on the list.

GardenGaff · 10/09/2025 11:33

It varies, a couple of years ago we spend 2.5k on 22y/o DS as he needed a new future proofed laptop for uni amongst other things, then last Christmas we spent about £150 on him. He doesn’t really ever ask for anything and we don’t set a budget as such.

Following with interest

toastandegg · 10/09/2025 12:17

Around £60 - they are working and I have younger children to buy for

ICanBuyMyselfFlowers25 · 10/09/2025 12:50

I have younger school age children and young adult kids. I still treat them all the same. Older dcs spend Xmas here. I even do them a stocking.
I would say usually it's around £500/700 each. But this year will be less possibly £350 as there's not much they want and we have some nice trips away planned next year where they can have extra things whilst away.

toastandegg · 10/09/2025 13:42

I don’t treat them the same but what goes around comes around - when they were teens and I had babies the babies got very little as they didn’t need anything that cost very much, now the ‘babies’ are older they need more and can’t buy it for themselves, when they are young adults and the older ones even older and have bills of their own they will need more spent on them etc, it all evens out eventually,

ComfortFoodCafe · 10/09/2025 13:46

My parents stopped buying for me & my siblings when we turned 18.

BG2015 · 10/09/2025 16:40

I have 2 adult DS, both in their 20's and working, both have girlfriends. I give my sons £150 each and then buy them some things to open. I give their girlfriends £50 each.

Last year I also gave them a £50 hotel voucher. I don't buy for any wider family now as we decided to stop it.

RuthW · 10/09/2025 17:35

About £350. I only have one.

EffinMagicFairy · 10/09/2025 17:50

About £500 each - 2 DC

Mikart · 10/09/2025 21:28

Dd 28 gets £250 in her bank account and about £100 spent on gifts.

Mutability · 10/09/2025 21:29

About £500 each.

aLogLady · 10/09/2025 21:36

Wow, some of these figures are huge! I’ve struggled to have kids, but my parents give us (their children) a present budget of about £40. Though they buy the eldest more expensive gifts as my mum perceives her as not having enough (she has four childen and an excellent career, so it’s a psychological rather than accurate perception). Actually one year they gave me an “antique” ceramic Christmas jar. Ok… thanks (it said ernesto on the bottom, in other words, it was from lidl.)

Mumwithbaggage · 10/09/2025 23:05

Not as much as many of you but bought them stuff as needed - Mac for university, clothes, they had a car for their use, driving lessons etc. I don't really work to a budget, though just graduated dd will probably get more than her sibs who all earn/own houses. They'll all get her nice stuff too but no-one goes mad. It's one day.

jocktamsonsbairn · 10/09/2025 23:06

Wow!! Single parent here and these figures are crazy to me! I aim for about £150 per adult child but seriously need to reduce it to about £50/60 now partners are involved.

ScarlettSunset · 10/09/2025 23:09

It varies but usually about £100 for main present(s) and then stocking fillers in addition.

DCorMe · 10/09/2025 23:12

My MIL spends £200 on each of her 4DC and £75 on their spouses. My DM spends £60 on her 3 DD
and £30-40 on their spouses

My “adult” DC are still uni years and not working full time so between £150-£200 each which includes main present, pjs and stockings

HeddaGarbled · 10/09/2025 23:13

Main present around £80-£100, usually jeans or shoes or a jacket or something like that which they’ll have chosen themselves and sent me the link for. Then I’ll spend approx another £50 on surprises.

I’m 44. My mum spends £50 on me at Christmas and gives me the same for my birthday. It’s the same amount I got at 18. Clearly my mum doesn’t link her present buying budget to the CPI!

jocktamsonsbairn · 10/09/2025 23:22

@DublinLaLaLawhats the CPI?

jettisoned · 10/09/2025 23:23

250 for adult dc and partners. Same for birthday unless it's a big one then 500. (Again for dc and partners) smaller dc and gc get the same but mostly in presents

legogal1 · 10/09/2025 23:23

I have 2 DS 18 and 21 can you lovely people, give me ideas for birthday and or Christmas gifts, thanks: )

Financial · 10/09/2025 23:25

It varies, somewhere between £300-£500

Lavenderandbrown · 10/09/2025 23:53

My dd (26) has a late November birthday so combined gift was 1000$ (bracelet) she has her own own and doesn’t have space for anything else so she signposts me towards items she would like.

My DS (23) and my nephew received 160$ (airbuds) for my nephew my dad (his grandpa) shared that cost

DD boyfriend 100$ (shirt and tie)

I don’t spend the same amount. I physically do much more for my DS (in grad school ) and I financially help him out thru the year. He doesn’t care who gets what has no idea the bracelet cost 1000$ and would never ever think to ask. My DM always said not the same money but the same # of presents to open…so one each. I have posted before this exact scenario as I am and have been significantly reducing my gift expenses for the holidays.

Food /drink /fabulous decorating /comfortable warm welcoming home to enjoy over the holiday sure…piles of presents no. I don’t believe in buying token gifts or some little thoughtful thing… one larger ticket item and done.

and it is all received gratefully excitedly and happily.

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 11/09/2025 01:01

It will be about £150 but we are contributing to house deposit for eldest and university accommodation for youngest so we won’t be going silly at Xmas.
