What Xmas presents have you bought yourself, or plan to?

One of the things that I absolutely LOVE about being single is the time on Xmas Eve and Day that I get to surf the 'net and shop for bargain price goodies for myself. I put away money every month in a savings account throughout the year to buy gifts for people - but mostly for me! 😂

Last year I bought myself a DAB radio/CD player for the kitchen; this year a laptop and a new phone. I've also hit Boots as that's amazing and has 20% off online only order atm - so I bought a new MAC foundation brush and some make-up - now holding fire for the reduced perfume gift sets...😈😁

What do you get yourself?

Wish I’d bought myself something! Money is tight but hoping to save up and splash out on some ‘posh chocs’ or a cocktail or ideally a book (Merkel’s autobiography looks ace but won’t be at the library yet)
in the spring.

Ooh thanks @Elphaba17 don't know whether to get the 3 in 1 or 5 in 1 though!

doneandone · 31/12/2024 00:08

@Elphaba17 I've been trying to order this one for a couple of days on the boots website but it's been out of stock,
I've just managed to buy it!
Been trying to put it in my basket for the last half an hour but it said stock not available then finally it let me add and buy it!! Thanks!!

I’ve ordered this Emma Bridgewater mug, which I have been coveting for a while 😊

I'm going to treat myself to some new Lego. There was a big box under the tree from DH and I was very excited what it was. I unwrapped it on Christmas day and it was a BLOODY TOASTER, which I didn't want or ask for, plus it was my main present. So utterly disappointed, so I'm buying my own.

Toaster..? Surely it's actually his new bath bomb ☺️

Joking, joking... My DP admitted he was about to buy me a set of kitchen knives - which is fine if you're super into cooking, I cook but I don't enjoy it, but luckily for him he reconsidered!

I've just bought myself a pj set that is brushed cotton, striped (I love thick stripes), and in navy & green (my favorite combination!). Still pricey on sale but had been out of stock, and I was sorely regretting not asking for them as a Christmas present.
I'm now debating whether to (1) use them as soon as they arrive, because it's definitely long pjs temps, or (2) save them and start a small stash of treats to myself for AW25. My birthday is in autumn so it'd be lovely having nice "surprises" to get me in the mood for Christmas run-up.

Those are beautiful!

I'd wear the pj's now.

Buy xmas presents for yourself? for yourself? ! wouldnt ever cross my mind

TwinklyNight · 06/03/2025 21:29

I believe that many people recieve money in cards at Christmas then buy themselves something afterwards in the sales.

Really? I buy myself at least a dozen items throughout the year, to open on Christmas Day.

Trishyb10 · 06/03/2025 22:50

I,ve learnt something here, .. i was under the assumption everyone sharing xmas with others, but if your alone for xmas thats why you would buy presents for yourself, is that it? x

Trishyb10 · 06/03/2025 23:07

Never heard of anyone buying xmas presents for themselves,am quite bewildered by it, ha x

hattie43 · 07/03/2025 08:49

@Trishyb10

Have you never heard of ' gift to self '
Self care , treats etc
Why wouldn't you buy yourself something

Bjorkdidit · 07/03/2025 09:05

People buy themselves things all the time, but it's not a gift. It's just buying things you want or need. Designating something as 'a gift' otherwise you wouldn't allow yourself to buy it or get the nicer version is just odd, the money comes out of the same pot either way.

Gifts are chosen and bought by other people to celebrate an occasion or 'just because'. If the recipient has chosen the item, sent links or even bought and wrapped it, it is not a gift because that would require the giver to see/find something and decide to buy it for the recipient.

hattie43 · 07/03/2025 09:24

@Bjorkdidit

I think the nuance is lost on you .

Self-gifting is a form of self-care.

AmazingGraze · 07/03/2025 09:34

It's just buying something for yourself. It doesn't need a fancy name.

I am a lone parent to 2 sons. They buy me thoughtful gifts and we have lovely time. I will also use Xmas as a time to buy a couple of things for myself that are above my normal day to day budget, or are things I want rather than need.
This year I got myself some really good wetsuit gloves and one of those little book lights you clip to your book. I enjoyed choosing them, I was excited to be able to use them after Xmas, the boys are intrigued to see what I've bought myself (other years have been a lovely sweater and a Kindle).

Are you less bewildered now?

A gift is a shorter way of saying "buying something for myself"

I am not alone, but I do not have a significant adult choosing a gift for me to unwrap on Christmas day. Don't get me wrong, me buying myself a few things isn't a necessary act, I'm not full of self pity or some Christmas martyr, it's just something nice I do for myself.

Then expand your mind to think why others might regard it as a nice thing to do.

mondaytosunday · 07/03/2025 10:19

@Trishyb10 really? I'm a widow, my parents are dead and my siblings live abroad (though one does send gifts). I get myself a Christmas gift most years. Not last year as a bit of a cash crunch but in the past I've had a bespoke bedside rug made, a monthly flower subscription, a V&A membership...Christmas is the excuse to spend an extra amount on myself. Now my kids are older they get me a gift too, but I've spent many years with nothing to open under the tree so it's nice to know I've got something special.
