Christmas words/phrases that make you cringe

Do you have any Christmas words or phrases that make you cringe.

Mine are:
Crimbo
The Big Day
Magical.

The latter two are partly because I think it puts too much pressure on people to do something that isn't attainable - too much emphasis on things being perfect during a particular 24 hour period.

Little children will be happy and excited (and probably get overwhelmed and overtired and have tantrums) if they have family who love them, some presents from family and Santa and some treats/special food and some decorations like a Christmas tree. Beyond this I'm not sure what "making it magical" really means. It will be what it will be and children will react however they react.

"Have a good one"

Xmas

He's Been!
Written by adults alongside a photo of a pile of presents they've wrapped themselves and put under their own tree.

Crimbo
Chrissie pressie
Holibobs
Hubs / hubby
Wifey

I appreciate that the last 3 are not season specific, but they still make want to vomit.

HenryCavillsPerfectTeeth · 24/12/2024 22:05

Picky bits
Chocs
It's all about the kids

HangingOver · 24/12/2024 22:07

"all the trimmings" makes me want to kill people

Kibble29 · 24/12/2024 22:09

Not specific to Christmas but the “D” before relations seem to come out more at this time of year, I guess because people are spending more time with their DH, Dc, DM, DDad, DSis, DBIL, DHamster, DNeighbour.

Another vote for "happy holiday".

Indeed, the word "holiday" to mean a celebration such as Christmas, with phrases such as "enjoy yourself this holiday". I know it's what the Americans call a holiday, but it's grating.

Crimbo with the famalam, making memories ✨

Crimbo 😡
Santa

Yes these.

Franklefoot · 24/12/2024 22:17

M&S had a Christmas sandwich this year, called 'The Christmas Sando'. Too, too cringe.

HeddaGarbled · 24/12/2024 22:17

Lots of Chrimbo hate, but my lovely BIL says this, a bit tongue in cheek to make the kids roll their eyes, so it makes me smile whenever I hear it.

schnubbins · 24/12/2024 22:18

Happy Holidays ..hate it!

Not just at Christmas but pud, chocs and “posh” anything. Bonus hatred for “posh chocs”. Oh and booze, especially “boozy lunch”.

Aaaand, on MN, people who claim they take turns opening presents so they can oooh and ahhh at each others’. Does anyone really oooh and ahhh in real life??

God yes, 'posh chocs' makes my skin crawl.

Groovee · 24/12/2024 22:19

Xmas!

Printedword · 24/12/2024 22:20

Interesting, I spell it Chrimbo, but it's only ever on a reminder list to self and primarily cos I don't like the abbreviation Xmas.

The expression 'picky bits' is definitely irritating

TwigletsAndRadishes · 24/12/2024 22:25

Yes Yes Yes to the Christmas Sando (also really hate the word sarnie) and 'all the trimmings.'

I also hate champers, poo, anything dinner (as in 'we are having a turkey dinner/steak dinner') and the word 'spread' used to describe a table full of food.

GinToBegin · 24/12/2024 22:30

‘Posh’ whatever.
‘Proper’ whatever.
Whatever ‘with a Twist’ makes me want to hurt people.

I don’t recall seeing (or hearing) Xmas for a long time now, but it was quite commonplace when I was young. I don't mind Xmas, but Chrimbo can fuck off.

A Sando is a specific type of Japanese/Korean sandwich - made with breaded chicken… which the M&S one was.

Some excellent points made here, great to get the snark out, to which I will add...

Over exaggerated cosiness, 'snuggling under a blanket with a hot choccie to watch a Christmas film with my 5 year old/teen/DP', perhaps I'm just jealous but no way would my teens have snuggled under blankets to watch any film all together in this house, and the 5 year old would have wiggled off the sofa or spilt their hot chocolate on the blanket before the opening credits were done... What's with the excitement about Christmas hot chocolate also, are you and your kids not allowed it the rest of the year?

Calling something a 'station', particularly seen as a 'hot chocolate station' or a 'dessert station'. I don't mind the idea of setting out all your stuff to make a hot drink to save getting it out of the cupboard every time as such, but unless you have a huge living room or you're drinking more hot chocolate than can be conceived by man's imagination is it not just in the way a lot of the time, and does it really need to be grandified into a 'station'? See also point above re grown adults insanely over excited about hot chocolate...

The word 'prep' particularly as applied to Christmas dinner, e.g. oh no I can't fit in 5 minutes to visit aunty beryl even though she's widowed and alone, I have to stay at home to prep the carrots... Usually used by people who make a right palaver out of cooking a simple roast dinner often for no more than 4 adults. I think it's the competitive martyrdom thing again mentioned up thread, just don't have the bloody carrots if the 'prep' is such a problem (or make your useless lazy lump of a husband do some prep for a change?)

Knittedfairies2 · 24/12/2024 22:54

Hot choc and 'thoughtful' gifts.
