Are shops near you open on Christmas Day?

My cousin used to work for Co-op and always worked Christmas, but the one near us will be closed. There is a Simply Fresh which will be open until 14:00 and I don’t believe the family who runs it celebrate Christmas. Tesco is closed but opening at silly o’clock on Boxing Day.

I don’t plan on visiting any shops as I will be busy stuffing myself with pigs in blankets Grin I’m just curious.

All of the corner shops are open and the petrol station. I’ve nipped to the corner shops on Christmas Day once for ice and it was so busy! Lots of people buying gas/electric, fags a beer! The takeaway on my estate was always busy Christmas Day night as well!

Interesting! I don’t think I’ve ever been to a shop on Christmas Day but it is reassuring to know one will be open just in case!

Also thanks for reminding me to buy ice 🧊

Yes, the Spar will be.

Wittow · 18/12/2024 15:20

The Shell petrol station near me is advertising it will be open all over Xmas. It has a co-op food inside too.

IggyAce · 18/12/2024 15:22

We have a Sainsbury’s local which is usually open.

purplecorkheart · 18/12/2024 15:24

Two of the petrol stations and there is a family who have a small shop near the church who may or may not open for an hour after mass but that is more a social thing rather than an business thing. They give out sweets to their customer kids etc.

Lovewine1975 · 18/12/2024 15:26

We have a small Morrisons near us which will be open all over Xmas including Xmas Day, also the petrol stations are

AmazingBouncingFerret · 18/12/2024 15:27

The only time I’ve ever visited a shop on Christmas Day is when I’ve pretended to desperately need something and then snuck a couple of cigarettes at the same time when I was a teenager!

Our Premier Stores is open until 1pm, which is lucky as I forgot to buy potatoes last year! They were serving glasses of sherry to all customers which was nice.

loropianalover · 18/12/2024 15:38

We have one country shop, it’s basically just a small room and is attached to the owners living room. They open for about an hour after mass.

My local Premier is open until 10pm Christmas Day.

The Spar shop is closed from Christmas Eve until NYE which is surprising.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 18/12/2024 15:41

Yes our local corner shops are owned by Asians and they’re normally open until about 2pm.

Always handy if you need batteries.

Houseplanter · 18/12/2024 15:43

I thought this was against the law tbh.

Never been to a shop on Christmas Day

ARichtGoodDram · 18/12/2024 15:44

The corner shop is open until 11am and then after that you can message them and they’ll open for you until 6pm.

I’m surprised to know takeaways open Christmas Day.

Why would it be against the law?

Needmorelego · 18/12/2024 15:45

My local corner shop will be. They barely close. Open at the crack of dawn, close at nearly midnight. 365 days a year.
It's the size of a shoe box yet always has the same half a dozen blokes working there at the same time.
They don't seem to take any time off.
You'd think once in a while (ie Christmas Day) they might fancy a lie in at home even if they don't actually celebrate xmas.

PlantDoctor · 18/12/2024 15:46

The garage is open. That's about it apart from the local Indian takeaway

Needmorelego · 18/12/2024 15:47

@Houseplanter a few years back a law was brought in for large retailers to close on Christmas Day the same as Easter Sunday.
Little shops are exempt.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 18/12/2024 15:48

No idea. We wouldn’t dream of going shopping on Christmas Day.

Houseplanter · 18/12/2024 15:50

@Needmorelego thanks.. that must be what I was thinking of.

I don’t think anyone plans to go shopping. They are there for those who need to pop in for something.

Needmorelego · 18/12/2024 15:58

Every area should have a designated pharmacy open on Christmas Day.
My mum used to work for Boots. When it was their pharmacy on the rota so many people used to translate that as the whole shop was open.
It wasn't. Just the pharmacy with 2 or 3 members of staff. In order to get to the pharmacy you had to ring first to be escorted through the shopping centre. It was meant to be for emergency prescriptions.
They did have an unwritten rule about letting people buy baby formula but it was amazing the amount of people that would ask if they could put their photos in to develop or buy make up while they were there 😂😂😂😂

suki1964 · 18/12/2024 16:03

One or other local petrol station will open for 2 hrs in the morning - they take turns but in the town the Supervalu will be open most of the day. I had to pop in to see a member of staff to give her a wee gift on Boxing Day and the place was rammed with people looking the hot food counter open !!

Our Supermarket - Tesco - shuts at 7pm Christmas Eve and reopens the day after Boxing Day

janfebmar87 · 18/12/2024 16:10

Our local shop is open 10-2, but they have stressed that it's completely voluntary for the staff. If they have enough willing to work (double time) then they will open.

They have quite a few students working there so guessing they want the work
