Are shops near you open on Christmas Day?

My cousin used to work for Co-op and always worked Christmas, but the one near us will be closed. There is a Simply Fresh which will be open until 14:00 and I don’t believe the family who runs it celebrate Christmas. Tesco is closed but opening at silly o’clock on Boxing Day.

I don’t plan on visiting any shops as I will be busy stuffing myself with pigs in blankets Grin I’m just curious.

I thought this was against the law tbh.

Never been to a shop on Christmas Day

It goes on the square footage of the store. In England and Wales anything over 280 m2 can't open. Scottish laws are different though.

I think the local corner shop is and the local garage which has a small Co Op shop. The prices are extortionate though so only to be used for emergency fags forgotten food items.

No idea. We wouldn’t dream of going shopping on Christmas Day.

Well it tends to be for last minute emergencies rather than people deciding it’s a good day for a shopping spree. Like last year when I realised I’d forgotten to get potatoes!
Also a lot of people in this country celebrate Christmas of course.

Local garage is open, they're usually very well stocked as the only shop for a few miles. Local takeaways are open too, probably because they're all run by people who don't celebrate Christmas.

I don't think I've ever been shopping on Christmas day though, if it's forgotten or missing we go without!

I didn’t know this. Interesting, thank you.

I'm in Germany. Shops will close at midday on 24 December and not open again until 27 December with the exception of petrol stations and small shops in airports and train stations. No supermarkets!

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/12/2024 16:21

I've absolutely no idea. I've never needed a shop on Christmas Day.
I'm old enough to remember when shops closed on Wednesday afternoons, maybe Saturday afternoons, all day Sunday and every bank holiday

There would have been a mutiny if my kids had been told they had to go without roast potatoes 😁. The shop is about 300 yards away though so wasn’t too much of a hardship popping out to get them, plus I got a sherry!

We have a co op and a post office with shop in the village. Neither will be open Christmas day.
They close around 6pm Christmas eve.

No shops in the next village open either.

There is a large tesco a few miles away which is also closed Christmas day but open 9am-6pm Boxing day.

Mine would actually kill me if I dared to forget roasties, it's a valiant reason to have to leave the house. If there's sherry involved I might have to 'forget' the spuds this year...

spar here is open and we always go to the seaside over Christmas and the one there is open too. there is a lot people use it too so must be worth opening.

mathanxiety · 18/12/2024 17:41

All supermarkets open for limited hours on Christmas Day here, plus the 7-11s and some petrol stations (US).

shellyleppard · 18/12/2024 17:42

My local corner shop is always open on Christmas day...... I'm usually buying extra wine lol

Taytocrisps · 18/12/2024 17:55

Very few shops are open on Christmas Day in Ireland. Pubs and restaurants are generally closed. There might be the odd corner shop open for a few hours, but I'd say they are few and far between.

Fizbosshoes · 18/12/2024 18:35

The off licence is open , we noticed it when we were going for a walk on Xmas day.i think DH went in to wish them Happy Christmas but we didn't buy anything.

Danielle9891 · 18/12/2024 19:16

A petrol station I used to work at was open 24 hours. I worked 7am-3pm by myself for minimum wage one Christmas. It was miserable, as I spent more money on the taxi into work than I made that day and if I didn't work it I'd end up with no more shifts as I was on a zero hour contract. It's pretty crap.
