Big Food Shop

What date are you doing your "big food shop" on this year? What food do you buy in this one?

I'm just starting to make my list and looking for inspiration as always end up forgetting something 😆

I'm picking up a click and collect on 23rd and usually end up scurrying later on in the day for something I've forgotten 🤦🏻‍♀️ I really try not to go to a supermarket on Christmas eve!

Already ordered a turkey and dessert and one side from M&S but looking to buy other sides at my shop and some family members are bringing other things.

Just what I am wondering too. I'm aiming for 23rd and hope I can get all the stuff I need.

sweetpickle2 · 16/12/2024 14:41

We're away at the weekend and won't be back until lunchtime on 23rd, which is when our family are showing up! So I need to do mine this Friday.

I have picked up some long life bits and pieces during my normal shop here and there over the last few months- quality street, crackers for cheese, cranberry sauce etc and the like (even got my pigs in blankets this week and shoved the in the freezer as I worry I won't get any nearer the time!)- so it's mainly fresh stuff now. I'm hoping it'll be fine and anything I get on Friday will last till 25th.

SharpOpalNewt · 16/12/2024 14:44

I've got a delivery coming on Thursday - closest slot I could get before Christmas 🙄. Then will top up with stuff Christmas Eve. I'm not cooking Christmas dinner but am hosting seven on Boxing Day so just need to be ready for that really.

CoastalCalm · 16/12/2024 14:51

Having a really pared back Christmas as recovering from surgery , we have gammon already and picking up seafood on Christmas Eve then going to M&S for a few sides and treats - if they are a bit bare we will call at Sainsbury’s too.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/12/2024 14:56

Husband will go on christmas eve. Meat is ordered from the butcher, and vegetables from the grocer, just need to be collected. He will just go to M&S and buy anything else we need.

Iliketulips · 16/12/2024 15:06

I've bought things in advance like pickle onions, red onion chutney, mayonnaise, foil, cooking oil, Xmas cake, crisps, mince pies, xmas pudding, alcohol, mulled wine, DH's favourite spirit. Having a freezer delivery this afternoon, so have added cheese, pizza and brandy butter/cream to it.

On next week's list are milk, yogurts, greek yogurt, dip, coleslaw, butter, sausage rolls, frozen peas, potatoes, sproats, carrots, sweet potato, onions, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, clementines, apples, bananas, crusty rolls, bread, ready meals for one easy meal, quiche, curry, stir fry and veggie shepherds pie ingredients. Not overly fussed about desserts, but you may be.

mrsm43s · 16/12/2024 15:07

I'm going on 22nd, but I've already ordered the meat and picked up any other bits that I can that I've seen which have a long enough shelf life. So on the 22nd it'll mostly be veg, salad, creams, breads etc with short shelf lives that I need to pick up,

MaltipooMama · 16/12/2024 15:18

I've staggered a LOT of mine! Did the alcohol shop a while back (before I found out I was pregnant... d'oh) and then have an Ocado delivery coming on Wednesday with all my M&S cheeses and party food. I then have two food to go orders to collect on Christmas Eve, one for Sainsbury's and one for M&S as well as a Sainsbury's Christmas shopping delivery coming on Christmas Eve as well! Sainsbury's always give you the substitutes on the receipt first thing so if there's anything missing I'll hit another supermarket or two first thing in the morning. Feeling very prepared and organised this year 😀

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 16/12/2024 15:21

Always remember to add stuff for meals the other side of christmas too.

The bits for the lists that usually get forgotten are the basics/everyday items like

Loo roll (extra if you have guests)
Kitchen roll
Foil/cling film
Batteries
Painkillers

Also i know it isn't food shopping but make sure anyone who has prescription meds has enough to last them into new year

Autumndayz77 · 16/12/2024 15:21

I’m going to do as much as I can tomorrow and then anything i can’t get with a long enough sell by date at weekend.

loubielou31 · 16/12/2024 15:22

We are away over the weekend so I have done a click and collect for Friday and will have to go the supermarket on Christmas eve for a turkey and whatever doesn't arrive in the click and collect. I'm hoping it won't be hideous.

VegTrug · 16/12/2024 15:26

Why are you so interested in what other people are eating?! Baffling

wonkylegs · 16/12/2024 15:35

Friday 20th - I always shop on a Friday morning as it's my 'day off' so will do the same this week - it's only fresh stuff I have to get
Preordered Turkey is coming on 22nd
Preordered 1/2Stilton and ham are coming on 19th
Pigs in blankets, homemade cranberry sauce & sausage meat already in freezer
Relatives start arriving Friday afternoon

Why are you responding to a thread that clearly doesn't interest you?

Lovemusic82 · 16/12/2024 15:48

I bought a frozen Turkey crown today so I don’t need to go out Christmas Eve trying to find one. There’s only 3 of us Christmas Day so I don’t need to buy a huge amount. I have been buying things that keep for the last week so I just need to get vegetables, potatoes, cheese etc…., I will probably do that in Sunday or Monday.

SugarCookieMonster · 16/12/2024 16:02

I split my list into 2: perishables and non perishables. It’s in an app on my phone so I tick them off as I go but I can untick them next year to add it all back on so I never forget what I normally buy for Xmas (helpful when everyone forgets what they loved last year!)

The non perishables can be bought early, added to weekly shops etc and put away. This includes things like:
drinks
crackers for cheese
chutneys
cranberry sauce
foil / foil trays
nuts
goose fat
frozen bits
hot choc bits
part baked bread rolls
spices
cupboard ingredients like stock cubes

Then I just need to get the perishables:
fruits incl bit for cheeseboard and lemon for seafood
veg
salad bits
kid snacks like yoghurt, cheese strings
all the meats
puff pastry for Nutella Xmas tree or pie
cheeses
creams
eggs
smoked salmon
blinis
crumpets

This year we’re doing it a bit different.
23rd Lasagne and garlic bread for dinner
24th Turkey roast dinner
25th buffet with leftover turkey, a cola gammon joint, pigs in blankets, chutneys, cheeseboard, crab, prawns, part packed bread etc and frozen party bits for later in the evening.
26th Beef wellington

mitogoshigg · 16/12/2024 16:06

Not cooking this year but if I am I shop at 6am on Christmas Eve but all longer life items are bought ahead

makemineadecaf · 16/12/2024 16:08

All the main Christmas Day stuff ordered from M&S to collect Xmas eve and then have an Asda delivery for drinks, party food etc on 23rd

GroovyChick87 · 16/12/2024 16:10

I have all my frozen stuff, snacks and condiments. I just need to get potatoes, fresh veg and a few tubs of custard/ cream. Maybe another meat and a trifle so I'll be getting that around the 23rd.

GroovyChick87 · 16/12/2024 16:10

You're clearly interested enough yourself to open the thread and comment.

DappledThings · 16/12/2024 16:11

The only year we've actually planned to that degree is the year I did it in labour. I assume DH is planning one big shop between now and Christmas. Don't know. Never treated it like a military operation.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/12/2024 16:18

Supermarket delivery on the Sunday
I'm working on the Monday

Anything last minute I can get early on Christmas Eve as I've said I'll drop DH off at work

I am pretty organised for food and sundries (went to costco )
So it's mainly fruit and vegetables

Crunchymum · 16/12/2024 16:28

Sainsburys is coming on Christmas Eve (delivery person will get a nice tip) and I'll know quite early on Christmas Eve if anything essential is missing so I can run out first thing and get it.

I do buy a few bits from M&S and I'll get them on 23rd.

We are for actual Christmas dinner but I am doing our own dinner on Boxing day.

Manypaws · 16/12/2024 16:41

Big shop coming on Sunday, m n s on 23rd and butchers and bakers on 24th

TheDandyLion · 16/12/2024 16:41

I've done most of it allready. Stocked up on all the dry stuff, treats and meat is all in the freezer. I'll go out at the weekend or after work on the 23rd for a top ups of more veg and fridge stuff. I'd much rather try to do a smaller trip when its going to be hectic.
