Big Food Shop

What date are you doing your "big food shop" on this year? What food do you buy in this one?

I'm just starting to make my list and looking for inspiration as always end up forgetting something 😆

I'm picking up a click and collect on 23rd and usually end up scurrying later on in the day for something I've forgotten 🤦🏻‍♀️ I really try not to go to a supermarket on Christmas eve!

Already ordered a turkey and dessert and one side from M&S but looking to buy other sides at my shop and some family members are bringing other things.

Thanks for all the nice responses. I've already jotted down a couple of items from your suggestions so yes this thread has been useful.

I was seeing the thread as a general chat / brain download of shopping lists.

I started today for cupboard snacks but I’ll be buying all the fresh stuff over the weekend/potentially Monday.

Always remember to add stuff for meals the other side of christmas too.

The bits for the lists that usually get forgotten are the basics/everyday items like

Loo roll (extra if you have guests)
Kitchen roll
Foil/cling film
Batteries
Painkillers

Also i know it isn't food shopping but make sure anyone who has prescription meds has enough to last them into new year

Thank you, exactly the type of thing I was meaning!

Sainsburys is coming on Christmas Eve (delivery person will get a nice tip) and I'll know quite early on Christmas Eve if anything essential is missing so I can run out first thing and get it.

I do buy a few bits from M&S and I'll get them on 23rd.

We are for actual Christmas dinner but I am doing our own dinner on Boxing day.

That’s my favourite thing about Sainsbury’s.
We have a delivery coming on the 23rd and plan to M&S that day too so if anything is missing on Sainsbury’s order I can go to a supermarket too.
Butchers order is booked for collection on Christmas Eve morning as are pastries from the local coffee shop for Christmas morning breakfast.

TheSandgroper · 17/12/2024 05:05

I will get most of it tomorrow and on Tuesday just top up with fresh salad leaves and crusty bread.

Must write my list today …. Not the week to be without, really.

DrunkenKoala · 17/12/2024 05:31

Throughout the year I get my weekly shop delivered on a Sunday morning so I've stuck with my usual slot this year - 22nd. I've got the turkey, gammon and a couple of desserts on order from M&S which I'll pick up on the morning of the 23rd and any last minute bits that I've forgotten or didn't get with my delivery the previous day.

Since early Nov I've been buying non perishables and food for the freezer so I've got a lot already. Sunday's delivery will mainly be fruit, veg and salad, dairy and chilled foods and bakery foods plus other things like toiletries, bin bags, kitchen roll etc.

Also remembered to order my prescription at the weekend which was approved this afternoon so I'll be able to collect that later in the week.

Stuff I forget
Butter ( for bread sauce)
White loaf (for Bread sauce)
Dishwasher tablets ( a mistake never to be repeated!)
Tea and coffee
Oil of choice
Enough single/double cream
Enough fresh custard
Foil/baking parchment
Painkillers
Indigestion stuff of choice
Paper napkins
Paper table cloth for buffet

DH and I finalised the Sainsbury order , now we just have to wait to see if there are subs or Not Available on it .

I bought some M&S savoury crackers yesterday
Our drinks go in the porch it's cold ) so they're not cluttering up fridge space

I'll get the vegetables on Tuesday ( no space for them otherwise !)

I'm sure there will be something I forget /

This reminds me i need to make a menu plan.Problem is i had a emergency c section last week so struggling to stand for long periods.Thankfully we had the forethought before to arrange to have christmas dinner at my other halfs mothers house.Thinking i probably dont want to do to much with a newborn.

So now although its been lovely having my other half cook for us hes the sweetest guy.He cant really cook so relying on jar sauces, microwave veg and chips rip

Ideally i need to make a menu i can cook with help thats not to labor intensive

The 23rd gonna have to do the big shop hopefully we will go to a big store with mobility scooters so i will be able to.All the slots for delivery probably booked up by now and its easier making my own substitutions.

I was thinking after the big shop asking my other half to run into costco and getting a hot roast chicken.Just wraps salad chicken sauces and chippy chips make for a easy dinner. Then on the 24th Chinese take out ,on christmas day we are eating at family but gonna cook a gammon in the slow cooker for boxing day sandwiches. For breakfast i dont know needs to be easy and then nibbles

@rosydreams

Aww , Christmas Dinner will be the furtherest thing from your mind ( apart from thinking "I am hungry " )

My DS was born just before the Millenium , that Christmas Dinner had DH and I cooking and eating in shifts while the other one tried to placate the very noisy baby . I was too tired to chew Xmas Grin

Enjoy dinner at our MIL ,
I don;t know what the shops willl be like on the 23rd - it would be worth double checking for delivery slots , you never know Smile
I'm going to brave the early morning Christmas Eve shops once I drop DH at work , for my fruit/veg so I aim to be in/out like a stealth ninja ( well thats the plan)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/12/2024 11:46

Costco on the 23rd will be Seven Circles of Hell

DH and I went two weeks ago , there was a Queue for the Queue , though once we were in there it was quite streamlined .

Unless you OH wants to get out of the house for a few hours , I;d give Costco a miss , anything on your list you can get elsewhere .

I split my list into 2: perishables and non perishables. It’s in an app on my phone so I tick them off as I go but I can untick them next year to add it all back on so I never forget what I normally buy for Xmas (helpful when everyone forgets what they loved last year!)

The non perishables can be bought early, added to weekly shops etc and put away. This includes things like:
drinks
crackers for cheese
chutneys
cranberry sauce
foil / foil trays
nuts
goose fat
frozen bits
hot choc bits
part baked bread rolls
spices
cupboard ingredients like stock cubes

Then I just need to get the perishables:
fruits incl bit for cheeseboard and lemon for seafood
veg
salad bits
kid snacks like yoghurt, cheese strings
all the meats
puff pastry for Nutella Xmas tree or pie
cheeses
creams
eggs
smoked salmon
blinis
crumpets

This year we’re doing it a bit different.
23rd Lasagne and garlic bread for dinner
24th Turkey roast dinner
25th buffet with leftover turkey, a cola gammon joint, pigs in blankets, chutneys, cheeseboard, crab, prawns, part packed bread etc and frozen party bits for later in the evening.
26th Beef wellington

I’m a perishable and non-perishable Christmas food list gal too 😄

woukd you mind saying what shopping list app you use? I’d like to save mine from year to year too!

o god i was so tired when i got back from the hospital i fell asleep in my recliner. My other half said he had to shoo our cat as he was clambering all over me mewling for some odd reason hahaha

Yeah its been a tiring sore week thus why need to come up with easy meal ideas.Thankfully breakfast can be toaster bagels/waffles,salmon and bacon easy to cook in oven

This baby although breastfeeds well is only happy sleeping on someones chest rip,I know what you mean.

I was thinking if we head to shops at opening it may not be so bad ,fingers crossed

MsSquiz · 21/12/2024 12:09

Our big shop is coming from Tesco on 23rd in the morning. Then we have a collection from M&S and a click and collect from Waitrose both on Christmas Eve early morning that DH will go to pick up and then get any other last min things that didn't come from Tesco or that we've forgotten.

We do this routine every year and it seems to work for us!

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2024 12:12

I booked my Xmas slot back in October for December 23rd with the turkey and trimmings plus roast for Boxing Day and do not want to add to it as I find it sort of resets on checking out and things that were in stock suddenly aren't. But I checked through it and realised I need a few more things (like I hadn't bought any wine 😱)! Tesco has slots still so getting a delivery tomorrow of things that aren't fresh (pet food, wine, pasta, paper towels etc) that we need for other meals. I am loath to go to the food shops at any time but at Christmas especially; memories of one year, before online deliveries, of standing 45 minutes to check out and over an hour to get out of the parking lot!

ballyhoomara · 21/12/2024 12:21

Had unplanned abdominal surgery this week so off my feet- 5 visitors coming Christmas eve.
Turkey and ham ordered at butchers and large click and collect - DH will collect on Monday.
I'll do some gentle prep this weekend while DH cleans and changes the beds

Daniki · 21/12/2024 12:23

I got my big shop Friday evening and spent so much money and I'm looking at it wondering how I spent so much as I still have to get the fresh stuff 🤣 everyone is coming to ours (about 8 people) I got lots of snacks, crisps crackers various cheese's. About 8 bottles of wine, 2 bottles of Bailey's. All the herbs and spices required and a few roasting trays (we've moved into our new home and very little) and a giant pot to brine my turkey in! Made my gravy and stuffing last night and froze it 👌

SugarCookieMonster · 21/12/2024 12:51

@StressedLP1 I use the Keep Notes in my android phone. You can add a checklist in the menu so you can use the tick off option. You can also change the background colour of the list so it’s easy to spot at a glance. Then next year I can just click the checked off greyed out items and they go back to the top of the active list. It’s been a huge time saver!

Got all drink bar a couple of extras to come tomorrow with my Tesco order. Marks and Spencer collection is Tuesday and I’ll do the food hall if there is anything last minute. I’ve tried to pick up some bits as I’ve gone to stop the frantic buying in the next couple of days.
