I want to buy a really nice big one as a gift, but it’s a bit of a minefield. Looked in a few shops today but came away confused and am now searching online. Budget £25-30.

Any brands I should look out for?

Bumping for you. Sorry we are a pand’oro household,

they are harder to find. If you ever come to Liverpool st station area in London outside the station Eataly has a fab selection of all the Italian goodies. Not sure if they have online shop.

Carluccios deliver very fancy looking ones!

IndustrialActionAhoy · 10/12/2024 21:32

Surely they're all delicious.

Gowlett · 10/12/2024 21:34

Toasted with butter. Lovely!

Howyoualldoworkme · 10/12/2024 21:34

Online you could try Sous Chef or Delicatezza.
Carluccio also do a lovely gluten free one that I sent to some friends.

BlackJacktheDog · 10/12/2024 21:36

Always Carluccios for me!

MamaWeasel · 10/12/2024 21:36

M&s do one in a lovely tin

WickedlyCharmed · 10/12/2024 21:39

We get one from Costco every year, sprinkle with a bit of Cointreau, warm/toast and eat with a small dollop of clotted cream!

unclebuck · 10/12/2024 21:44

I never ever go in Carluccios except to buy one ever xmas - they are the best I ever had and I have had expensive imported ones as presents 😂

Shodan · 10/12/2024 21:44

They sell some lovely-looking ones in the local Italian delicatessen/cafe near me- are you anywhere near something similar?

I'm afraid I used to just buy the ones from Wilko's (because of the tin 😳) and bought one from Lidl this year, so am no aficionado, but I'd deffo go into the Italian place if I needed guidance.

Ooh- they have a website!

I choose mine from TK Maxx every year, whichever one has the prettiest packaging. They've always been lovely!

I don't think I've ever eaten bad panettone

Frolie · 10/12/2024 22:22

Lina Stores!

I buy one from here every year. They deliver and are delicious 😋

We bought the Loison Genesi Classico panettone from Ocado last week to try and it was lovely. Around £30 IIRC.

Cactuslife · 10/12/2024 22:50

Ooh this is interesting! My usual Aldi one is one of the highlights of Christmas but I’m definitely open to trying a more expensive one

SereneCapybara · 10/12/2024 23:00

A friend of mine who is a real food snob and will only buy beef if he knows the name of the cow (sort of thing) told me the best traditional pannetone are in Lidl. So I got mine there last year and they were delicious. Only about £7-8 each I think.

I'm tempted to try them. Carluccio's makes perfect meringue, too.

Friendofdennis · 10/12/2024 23:12

Lidl. As an aside, we make bread and butter pudding with panettone and marmalade. It’s amazing

JingleB · 10/12/2024 23:22

Just avoid all the stupid flavoured ones - chocolate or caramel or others. The unadulterated panettone is the best. Relatives who know we like panettone keep buying us the gimmicky ones for Christmas presents and it's always a letdown.

Loison is a classic. Costco gets some decent ones in - Lazarroni iirc. In the past couple years Sainsbury's has won a bunch of the newspaper taste tests if you're after a more affordable option.

SoYouThinkYouCanPrance · 10/12/2024 23:39

I have one that I’m saving for Christmas but now that I have read this thread, I kind of want to just eat it and get another.

Sgtmajormummy · 10/12/2024 23:59

If you can find one by the Milanese company Le Tre Marie they’re top of the Italian Consumer magazine “AltroConsumo” survey this year.

But quite honestly Lidl is fine.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 11/12/2024 00:10

I’m in the process of selflessly taste testing so we get a good one for Christmas.
aldi was weirdly bitter. Asda was bland but nice. Sainsburys next…

NotmySundaybest · 11/12/2024 08:13

Ooo we've got the pistachio one from Lidl for Christmas morning breakfast.
In the interim though we tried the Morrisons from the bakery choc chip one. Was very nice.
Also the Aldi pistachio and chocolate last week. This was ok but couldn't taste the pistachio.
