To make dreams come true regardless of price?

I am not sure what to do.
Ds is in his last year of believing. He wants a particular toy for Christmas.
Dh says it is silly money to spend on a soft toy, and is right.
But I do love that moment when they get what they asked for...
I know there is not one right answer. Different things work for different families.
But if he doesn't get his one most wanted gift, how do I frame that on Christmas Day? I'm sure other people have been here before.

I'd buy it definitely

Hayley1256 · 07/12/2024 22:31

Is this the one? It's in stock in a few places online

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 22:32

Yes. I don't believe it is in stock anywhere.

If you gave the child the same cash value, would they chose that toy, or something else?

My teenager has asked for a sorting hat Squishmallow, which I think is rather odd... (the toy itself, not wanting a Squishmallow) but its her opinion, not nine that matters.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 07/12/2024 22:37

I've just gone on the website and they have persimmon sky dragons if that's what you want?

Hayley1256 · 07/12/2024 22:38

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 22:32

Yes. I don't believe it is in stock anywhere.

Luxe collective have it but I've not ordered from there before so not sure how legit they are, the other place that came up was a 2nd hand one which I didn't realise

TickingAlongNicely · 07/12/2024 22:38

For your jellycat, try garden centres. They seem to have loads of jelly cats.

scoutingfortwirls · 07/12/2024 22:39

When he's an adult you'll regret it if you don't get it. Trust me. Get the thing he wants.

Hayley1256 · 07/12/2024 22:45

Wow, I didn't realise how collectable jellycats are - I'm no longer regretting the £££££ I spent on then when she was younger 😅

Saz12 · 07/12/2024 22:49

I would get the neatest thing possible. Because if he really loves it, second best will not be as beloved (and it's £30!!! Still v expensive, not worth the £20 saving). It doesn't sound like your dc are grabby.

Dearover · 07/12/2024 22:50

Just checked ours out. He's Bashful.

RawBloomers · 07/12/2024 22:54

What exactly have you taught him to believe?

Plenty of kids believe in Father Christmas without it meaning they will get whatever they ask for.

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 23:00

They usually expect to get some things from their list, but not all, plus some surprises. I think they have all got wise to it this year, as there is so little on the list. They all have about 3 things, and then the word 'surprises'!
I think I am just going to stick with the fuzzy one I have. It is cute. He will love it. And then he can have a really good think about how much he might want the other one before his birthday.
Tricky decision, but I don't want to spend £50+ and it is still not quite right. I have no idea if he will be delighted or disappointed, but he really isn't grabby. Just loves a soft toy!

Minihero · 08/12/2024 09:59

Buy the toy, they grow up so fast.

purplespink · 08/12/2024 10:08

@workstealssleep I really think that if you can afford it, you should buy it. I know what you mean about intentional buying, but Jellycat's are timeless and he will definitely pass it down to his children if he has them. I know it may not seem like a big deal to an adult, but the rainbow spine is a detail that I think really appeals.

Nearlyadoctor · 08/12/2024 11:02

Please buy it if you can afford it. I’m 53 now and all I wanted one Christmas was a huge black teddy bear I’d seen in ? House of Fraser. I was 8 years old so 1979 and it cost £26 back then.
It’s one of the few things I remember getting as a child at Christmas ( despite getting plenty each year) because it was what I really wanted. That feeling of magic can never be taken away .

FlouncingBabooshka · 08/12/2024 13:43

OP - the persimmon sky dragon doesn’t seem to have multicolour spines. If that’s what he’s drawn to then the pale blue one looks a good bet - three in stock on this site and with 20% off when you sign up.

FlouncingBabooshka · 08/12/2024 13:46

It’s £48 on that site so £38.40 if you use the discount code.

Both of mine wanted something like that on their last year of believing - dd was asking for dolls, despite being a bit past playing with them. It felt like a waste of money.

I think she was choosing something a bit childish because she was leaning into childish things, still trying to believe iyswim.

I bought what she asked for, it was a bit of a waste, though she sold them this year in excellent condition.

I’d do the same again tbh.

It was similar with ds. Wanting something a bit daft. But sort of symbolic of wanting to still believe in a story that you know is a bit daft.

FlouncingBabooshka · 08/12/2024 14:10

Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/12/2024 13:48

Oops. - sorry. Didn’t check (and I’m always telling DH to check trustpilot too!)

It’s also in stock on a site called bopeep.co.U.K., which does seem to have a good trustpilot rating.

romdowa · 08/12/2024 14:13

I'd do everything in my power to get it , children only believe for such a short time. I never got what I asked for at Christmas, so it's a promise I've made to myself that my kids will get the thing they want the most.

suburburban · 08/12/2024 14:14

I would baulk at spending £50:on a soft toy.

FridayFeelingmidweek · 08/12/2024 14:19

I would say buy it. He's a kid, he won't know the meaning of the cost. Enjoy this last year of true magic and believing. You can't get the magic back once they become suspicious.

Symposium · 08/12/2024 15:19

I wouldn't use that luxx collective site. If you look at the customer pictures they are clearly selling fakes.
