I am not sure what to do.
Ds is in his last year of believing. He wants a particular toy for Christmas.
Dh says it is silly money to spend on a soft toy, and is right.
But I do love that moment when they get what they asked for...
I know there is not one right answer. Different things work for different families.
But if he doesn't get his one most wanted gift, how do I frame that on Christmas Day? I'm sure other people have been here before.

Get the child what he wants. Don’t get a cheap Penneys one - he will know the difference.

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 21:34

I haven't got a cheap version. It is the same brand and he will love it. It is just not the same toy.
I can't him the exact one. It is out of stock. I can get him one in a different colour, for over £50. I think he would prefer this.
None of my children are into brands yet. He just saw this in a shop and fell in love with it. His list has this item at the top, a couple of cheap things under £5, then 'any jellycat dragon' at the bottom.
One of his sisters wants a lunchbox and swimming costume.
One wants a doll, a cd player and jellybeans.
The amount I spend on each child isn't important. The initial worry was about spending £50+ on a soft toy, which does feel uncomfortable.

Whatever you do, don't get a fake. This one is super soft and cuddly.

Beware buying on Vinted/ ebay as there are a lot of fake jelly cats.

Campus gifts are good - I tend to get them from there. They seem to have a number of the dragons in stock - festival and Adon are £49.95 if one of them is the one you are looking for.

itsalwaysthesame · 07/12/2024 21:39

£50 is expensive for a soft toy but not so expensive I'd not buy it, I always wanted a Mr Frostie when I was a kid, it wasn't extortionate but I never got it (dad would spend 6 times as much down the pub a week), I've never gotten over it 😂

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 21:40

Thanks. The one I bought is not online. It is from a shop. If I buy the other it will be from the official website.

The Jellycat website is fab

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 07/12/2024 21:42

If it helps OP, I was in a similar position (child wanted a stitch toy that makes noises and moves, but she'd only seen it on an advert and at 7 years old didn't realise that it was actually a fancy puppet, so all the movement would have been on her)
I was really in two minds about it, because at £70 it was fine budget wise for a main present, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend that money on something I absolutely know will lose novelty fast. So I double checked that she knew it was a puppet and what that meant, and she decided to take it off her list.
If the circumstances had been the same as yours, and she knew exactly what she was getting from the toy, I'd have got it for her.

SybilTheSpy · 07/12/2024 21:42

Easy peasy. I'd get him the jellycat toy he had his heart set on.

beetr00 · 07/12/2024 21:47

is it this one @workstealssleep?

ah! sorry,🙂 see you've already bought

Jerseymilkshake · 07/12/2024 21:47

Aww I'd definitely get him the big jellycat dragon that he wants. They're expensive but not crazy if you can afford it.

NancyJoan · 07/12/2024 21:47

You are obviously going to get him something for Christmas. So it’s £50 on the thing he will love, or £50 on something your DH thinks it better value for money. That’s an easy choice to make. Send back the other one, and order the lovely dragon.

allthatfalafel · 07/12/2024 21:53

Is it actually £50 or is it the £110 one?

Kenclucky · 07/12/2024 21:54

Oh gosh just googled and now think I want santa to bring ME a 50cm dragon for Christmas!!

EmberAsh · 07/12/2024 21:55

I'm guessing it's the sky dragon he wants as this has been really popular and sold out. If you've got him a smaller one in the same style then I would get either sky, persimmon or dexter as they have the same texture. Avoid golden, onyx, lilac, snow and rose as they have rough bits and aren't as soft.

Kandyfloss10 · 07/12/2024 21:57

I would buy it , why not?! You’re only a kid once. If you can afford it and it’s not going to break the bank go for it.

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 22:04

It is interesting many people assume we will spend the money on something else regardless. That's not how we think of money. If he doesn't get a toy for £50, he gets one for £30. That is £20 saved. I won't randomly buy other stuff just because.
The main issue is I can't get him the one he wants. I'm not sure if what he loved about the one he saw was the colour, size, or position it sits in. He said the colour. I just have a feeling he would prefer the bigger one.
Either way it won't be the one he asked for. So what do I say to that?

You are clearly very knowledgeable on these things. I am assuming he would love a persimmon one. But at the moment he has ummm.... a sitting up green extra soft one. It is cute.
I asked him what was so special about a sky dragon and he said it was the rainbow spines.

I've just looked up these dragons to see what all the hype is about and they are indeed super nice.

The persimmon one is lovely.

Floralnomad · 07/12/2024 22:22

We have one of those jelly cat dragons in gold , she’s beautiful and called Alphetta , she was an impulse buy in a garden centre . Worth every penny .

Adventlandonhs · 07/12/2024 22:24

Just try and get the soft Toy.

It’s not an insane amount of money.

Iv got my daughter 2 of the Barth bears… the one in the pjs and the dressing gown one. It’s Christmas.

TheStorksAccomplice · 07/12/2024 22:26

HolyMoly24 · 07/12/2024 20:01

If I was spending that sort of money I'd want it to be the exact one that he wanted

Worth bearing in mind that Jellycats have a really strong resale value which could offset the cost further down the line. Or not, if it becomes a treasured lifelong possession. Either way, I'd keep the magic going while it lasts.

SereneCapybara · 07/12/2024 22:27

If you can afford it, buy it. In ten years' time you won't think, why did we waste money we could afford on giving him what he really wanted for Christmas when he was little. You'll be glad you made him happy. When they are older, you can discuss value for money with them. If you are short of money, you have to. But you're not.

SereneCapybara · 07/12/2024 22:28

wafflesmgee · 07/12/2024 20:10

I think longer term a better life lesson is that you don't always get what you want and you have to live within your means.
Nd that Christmas is about more than material things.

Yes but you have the rest of the year to learn that lesson. If it is affordable to create a bit of magic during midwinter, why not? If it isn't, that is a different issue. But OP says it is.

workstealssleep · 07/12/2024 22:28

I get what everyone is saying. But I can't get him exactly what he wants. Hopefully it won't matter at all as hopefully he will be delighted either way.
