When do you start putting out your Christmas snacks?

Now that we have the Christmas tree and decorations up, my DH and 2 DS keep asking me to put the Christmas goodies out - mince pies, chocolates, Twiglets, nuts, etc.

Even the After Eights which are specifically for Christmas Day!

Guaranteed if I put them out now, they’ll all be eaten by next weekend and I refuse to buy anymore.

They're all safely hidden away atm because the rest of my family just can’t be trusted!

I just buy what I fancy in December and eat it. Can't eat it all on one day and it would go off if left.

Iliketulips · 05/12/2024 15:07

Mince pies and the panettone cake I buy are ok to eat when DH starts moaning he hasn't had any yet. In the ideal world I'd save the Xmas cake until Xmas Eve, but DH usually wants some about five days before, so he has to accept when he's had his fair share (usually Boxing Day) there won't be any left for him when I've still got some!

Chocolates, nuts, crisps usually come out Xmas Eve when we open the wine box!

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 05/12/2024 15:08

We don't t really have rules as such we just buy bits and eat them when we fancy them through the month! (Within moderation of course😂)

Potentiallyplausible · 05/12/2024 15:08

Christmas Day.

SoYouThinkYouCanPrance · 05/12/2024 15:17

Christmas Eve mainly. Any earlier, and everyone peaks too soon and has a jaded palate by Christmas Day.

Starlight1979 · 05/12/2024 15:32

We just have a never-ending stream of Christmas snacks appearing between now and January.

Dry roasted peanuts and matchmakers have already been opened, I made a start on the cherry liquor chocolates last night (I hadn't had them since I was younger at my nans and used to eat them and pretend I was drunk 😂).

Next will probably be those pretzel sticks, Twiglets, Lebkuchen (?) and Stollen 😍

Readysetgooo · 05/12/2024 15:35

Not until Christmas Eve/Day much to husband's frustration and disappointment. He went to the supermarket at the weekend and treated himself to a large tub of heroes because he isn't allowed to crack open the chocolates we have!

CandyCane457 · 05/12/2024 18:46

I’ve been at it for the last couple of weeks! Don’t necessarily buy things for particular days/events but I bought some mince pies about two weeks ago and we just ate them when we fancied one. Had some friends over for a Christmas buffet at the weekend and I made those viral gingerbread men in puff pastry beds… had a few leftover that we’ve snacked on since. I love the festive munch M&S do… like a mix of pretzels and chocolate popcorn and chocolate bits. The sweet and sort combo is amazing. Tesco also do their own version and we’ve had a few bags of it now!

MamaWeasel · 05/12/2024 18:51

Edited because i misunderstood previous post

I am eating a mince pie for pudding as we speak!

OAPapparently · 05/12/2024 18:55

We used to have an open it on Christmas Eve rule until a few years ago when we all caught covid for Christmas and all completely (temporarily) lost our sense of taste for the whole festive season!
Now we eat it from mid-November - so far we have eaten a tub of Heroes, a pouch of Celebrations, a bag of Lebkuchen, a tray of toffifee, 3 boxes of mince pies and a tube of Pringles! 🐷

Balletdreamer · 05/12/2024 19:09

We’ve already eaten most of them

Namechangedforspooky · 05/12/2024 19:12

I’ve been eating mince pies and cheese footballs since September (not together obviously!)

reluctantbrit · 05/12/2024 19:26

1st Advent Sunday is the start of treats here. We had already mince pies because I craved baking them. Now the Stollen and Lebkuchen are open.

Chocolate (santa, coins, tree chocolates from Lidl, marzipan) comes for St. Nikolaus on the 6th, when that is gone, it's gone though and only comes back on Christmas Eve.

I don't boy Quality Street or the other tins, neither are crips or non-Christmas shaped chocolates reserved for Christmas her.

We did get a Celebration tin on Sunday as a thank you, that is 2/3 empty now. But that would have happened on any week of the year.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 05/12/2024 19:50

I always feel we go too soon then nothing feels special.
So this year I'm hoping to hold back until Xmas eve and have it carry us thru boxing day and the days in between Xmas

Pinkbendyman · 05/12/2024 20:41

Reading about everyone’s Christmas treats is making me want to raid the secret stash - I can’t wait to open the mince pies!

Also think I now need to go in search of stollen and M&S Christmas munch.

Thank you everyone, hopefully we can hold off until Christmas Eve 🤞🏻🌲🎅🏻

We've already had the mince pies, last year I found few that I like ditto this year. We've not really eaten anything else yet. I did have a packet of Lidl lobster cocktail crisps to see if they're as good this year and they are. If you've not had them they're like posh prawn cocktail but less sweet and spicier.

GreenFields07 · 06/12/2024 11:23

I think its abit tight to have treats and snacks in the house that no one can eat. Personally never understood that one. We buy, we eat, so we buy more. If you dont want people to eat things just dont buy it until you need it? I can understand if its something expensive or that you absolutely need it for Christmas day like the turkey. But come on, a few snacks? Its Christmas once a year just eat the snacks.

Hairgician · 06/12/2024 11:33

Havent really bought anything in yet, its usually christmas eve before we start opening anything anyway. Planning to make mince pies again this year as I find shop bought ones too sweet. I dont usually buy the sweet tubs in as we always end up with a few in anyway as presents. I have christmas cakes all baked and stashed for feeding and 1 is for me. Cant wait.
I try and buy bits and bobs in the run up now when they are on offer. I do most of my eating crap between christmas and new year. Baileys bought in other day and dying to have a wee glass, so might have one later, or wait til tomorrow.

frozendaisy · 06/12/2024 11:50

Usually wait until 23rd when all jobs are done and it'll time to just enjoy. And hopefully it's just collecting Christmas meat on 23rd morning and nothing else but you never know.

We are more of a Christmas Eve, onwards Christmas family than before. 23rd/24th and the 12 days is two full weeks that's perfect for us. January is long, so effectively starting it on the 6th is better. Although I do like January, it feels calm, new beginnings, cleansing after the excess, we are quite happy to knock 5 days off it at the beginning.

SisSuffragette · 06/12/2024 11:55

When the kids (and I!) Break up from school. Mince pies or similar are offered to guests with tea/coffee throughout the month. But chocolate, nuts etc not until the last day of school!

Ggmores · 06/12/2024 11:59

Christmas Eve is when we have things like crisps, nuts, canapés etc. We aren’t big lovers of mince pies, Christmas cake, stollen etc, so it tends to be the savoury stuff. When everyone is done with work the port and Stilton comes out, which I will then eat/drink through the holiday!

daffodilandtulip · 06/12/2024 12:04

When school and work is done. They're in a box upstairs which the sloth teens wouldn't even occur to go looking for.

But I do also specifically buy odd things like a box of mince pies or some candy canes, here and there which I know are for now when I buy them.

Emmz1510 · 06/12/2024 12:14

I normally don’t bother with Christmassy snacks until the few days running up to Christmas. Like others have said, don’t want to get fed up of them. After new year is the time to get sick of eating, not the 9th December! But then I’m also on a healthy eating plan which obviously influences things.

This cracked me up!! Cherry liquors are my fave I’ve already eaten three boxes 😬😂 I’ve had to make DH hide another two boxes and not let me have them until the 20th 😂 Just so tasty!!

They're the best! Do you remember those boxes of chocolate liquors you could get with miniature "bottles" of chocolate Drambuie, whisky etc in foil??? I used to love those! And chocolates with rose cream in them 😍
