How many people do you buy presents for?

Kaleidoscope101 · 03/12/2024 22:11

A few years back I decided to really streamline my Christmas present buying and now only buy for my kids and their grandparents (2).
Everyone else seems to have loads more people to buy for and I was just interested in how many people you buy presents for.
Just to add, I did make it known that I was streamlining the present buying. I would not want anyone to get me a present

I only buy gifts for my partner, 2 children and 3 friends. Our nieces/nephews and friends kids get cash as they’re older now. That’s it.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 04/12/2024 00:58

Two kids, two nieces, one first-cousin-once-removed, and my parents (joint dinner voucher), so six gifts in total.

We don't really exchange gifts in our family other than between me and my parents, my sister and have stopped and just get together for dinner instead, and my husband and I prefer to just treat ourselves to some things for ourselves and the house over the holiday.

So much less stressful.

Needanewname42 · 04/12/2024 01:44

3 parents/ inlaw
1 token sibling
1 DH
6 neices nephews
2 DC

13 never actually added it up before. Really want to dial back on the in-laws they are becoming very very hard to buy for

Topseyt123 · 04/12/2024 01:55

I buy for my elderly mother, my DH and my three DDs. I also will get token gifts for my DDs' partners if I have come to know them well. So at most it stretches to at most seven or eight people. It has to be immediate family only, or extremely closely connected to them.

That's enough. Some people really go overboard.

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 04/12/2024 01:57

Usually (including this year) none. I am generous when able to be throughout the year to my children though, it just doesn’t end up as something wrapped up under a tree.

On one of these threads in a previous year, one woman had a huge list which included the school crossing woman. Just no.

You’ve all seen the Martin Lewis obligations video, yes? That’s the video that sets the tone for my Christmas.

Husband, my mum, my DSis & brother in law, their dog (token as a joke. This year it's a pack of tennis balls), 5 nieces & nephews. 1 cousin, 1 friend.

If dh's nana sends a gift, we reciprocate even if in new year. But that's sporadic if she's able to get out, so we agree to send only if she does.

My husband only buys one gift after a spectacularly bad Christmas and I decided told him I would handle everything but my own.

growinguptobreakingdown · 04/12/2024 04:28

Thoughtful, time consuming and usually expensive

Immediate Family x 5
Grandparents x 4
Great grandparents x 2
Siblings and in laws x 4
Nieces and Nephews x 4

Thoughtful, time consuming but not too expensive

Aunts and Uncles x 6
Close family friends x 5

Token

Kids closest school friends x whoever is a bestie at the time
Teachers and volunteers who run clubs. x however many of them there are

Edited to add, I forgot about our cousins and their children, that's a few more....

PastaAndProse · 04/12/2024 09:47

DH, DS, 2x dogs, DMum, 3 sets of aunts/uncles, 3 godchildren, 8 friends, 2 friends children, teacher, TA x2, cleaner.

irregularegular · 04/12/2024 09:50

Not many.

DH and (young adult) DD, DS. They are the only people I buy a few presents each for.
My two sisters and their children (two children each). However, some years we have just bought for one sister each, or skipped husbands, or skipped gifts altogether. This year one sister is travelling in Asia with her family for six months. I'll probably offer to pay for some activity for the family as a gift.

DH's family don't do Xmas presents as it's not really part of their culture. I used to buy for my parents but they are not alive any more.

I also usually buy token gifts for people I want to thank at work eg. the woman who cleans my office. A secret santa among local friends. Small gifts for people who host Xmas parties etc.

Mum & Step-dad
Dad & his dog
DH
Grandma & Grandad
Cousin
Step-dad's mum

Next year we will have our first baby, and will be stopping Xmas gifts for everyone else. It feels like a waste every year. We'll just get people token gifts like a box of chocolates or nice biscuits and a card, my mum's also floated the idea of everyone going for a nice christmassy meal instead which I liked!
