Cool White Lights indoors did I make a mistake?

I know this gets talked about on MN alot but wanted a hand hold. Last year I had warm white lights on my tree. I have white and silver colour scheme and just felt it looked wrong with the yellow of the lights against the crisp white and silver. This year i bought some cool white ones and they are lovely on the tree. However, I wanted some lights inside my window and assumed they should match so got cool white too. I've spent a pretty penny on all these lights and think I made a mistake. DP will leave me if I change them as the lot were fifty pounds in total. Have I made a massive boo boo?

Honestly they are Christmas lights, does it matter? If you like them crack on.

Sofa1000 · 02/12/2024 16:30

Well. It just means that everything else you buy and every other decoration has to be cool toned which is difficult at Christmas. If you have cool white everywhere already what’s the issue? Is it that your lights look wrong against all the neighbours’ lights?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 02/12/2024 16:30

Hate white lights, cool or otherwise. He have a proper retro feel.

You may not like what I like and vice versa.

wouldbeflowerfarmer · 02/12/2024 17:03

All my lights are bright white, colour scheme is red/gold/pine green and clear glass. I think that if all your lights are the same shade of white then it all works.

Jooolz1 · 02/12/2024 17:06

LOL realise it' not a real problem. They are only lights at the end of the day. I just wanted it all too look so lovely as it's the first Christmas in our new house. Immediate neighbours all have warm white. Thinking its making the house look and feel colder.

I think you’re overthinking it. I’m sure they will look lovely. I’ve just decorated our tree and can’t even tell whether the lights are warm or cold. I just know I like them.

SnapdragonToadflax · 02/12/2024 17:12

Surely a white and silver colour scheme looks very cold anyway? You must like the style, otherwise why would you make your decorations cold colours? I'm guessing your house is very modern, shiny, grey and white.

It probably does look cold against other houses with warm lights, but if that's your style go with it.

slipperypenguin · 02/12/2024 17:16

If you had warm lights you'd be beating yourself up that it didn't match the decor and feeling equally as unsure about it. I get it though and the comparison - but if it matches your internal then that's really what matters most as you are going to be sitting in it!

cookiebee · 02/12/2024 17:19

Can you explain exactly what worries you about warm vs cool lights? I don’t understand, but il add I come from a place of having multicoloured, new, vintage, warm white, cool white, foil decorations, my parents old ones, new ones, plastic, glass, a light up post office scene that plays carols, basically NOTHING matches, it’s just Christmas to me. I’m guessing you are the type that likes it all subtle and neutral? Nothing wrong with that but take the stress away, get a kitsch Father Christmas snow globe that plays jingle bells 😂

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 02/12/2024 17:22

I don’t like cool white, I must admit, BUT I love having cool white and warm white entwined together, it’s really pretty! Maybe you could do that to ‘warm it up’ a little? It’ll still look ‘icier’ than warm white alone, so should fit your scheme nicely 🥰

Caffeineismydrug35 · 02/12/2024 17:23

I have a blue and silver decorated tree so use white lights too. I think they’re lovely! I used to have blue walls in my single days and no matter how many people told me it’s cold I loved it.
Don’t overthink it. As long as you and your family are happy, no one else cares much.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 02/12/2024 17:24

@Jooolz1 like this…

Cool White Lights indoors did I make a mistake?
Jooolz1 · 02/12/2024 17:27

@SnapdragonToadflax our house is parquet wood floors with all neutral decor - walls are white though. The lights just haven't made it look cozy at all. Maybe I can damage them accidentally when I take them down so I have to buy new ones next year. 😀

YANBU @Jooolz1 But saying you 'need a hand hold' MAY be over reacting a touch! 😬 I am not a fan of cool white lights at all. They always look garish to me. Can you switch them to warm white/take them back?

We ALWAYS have warm white.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/12/2024 17:28

We have warm white lights on the tree in our white playroom and cool white lights in our pink sitting room. I don't see any difference in the warmth of the room, there's more than the light colour that affects how inviting a room is. Some people like one, some like the other and some like very colourful lights, you've bought the colour you think goes best with your decorations and that's all that matters.

genesis92 · 02/12/2024 17:29

You need a hand hold about Christmas lights?

Chasingsquirrels · 02/12/2024 17:29

Can't you just try the warm white ones from last year in the window instead?

Jooolz1 · 02/12/2024 17:34

@cookiebee i guess it just feels cold and not cosy. The tree lights arent as much of a problem as they have a dimmer function. Those lights where you put the ring over the top of the tree and unfurl all the lights down, which is great by the way. So much easier. But I digress!
The ones in the window I cant dim and are very bright. I just know I should have gone warm white.

@genesis92 I know, I know. Bit daft to get upset over xmas lights. Just kicking myself that's all. Wanted to get it so right and haven't.

It sounds fine to me. Could you post a photo? Or have you already and I can't see it?

WeeOrcadian · 02/12/2024 17:43

Jesus Christ

Just have whatever lights you like - unless you leave them up yesterday round, nobody gives a fuck

Skyrainlight · 02/12/2024 17:48

If you like them that's all that matters. I personally am team warm white all the way.

StormingNorman · 02/12/2024 17:52

I’m sure they look beautiful. Christmas is all about colour and variety. It would be boring if we all decorated the same.

I think you should choose one or the other, mixed white and warm looks terrible. Which one you prefer is down to personal preference really- but cool white with white and silver does sound nice!
