Cool White Lights indoors did I make a mistake?

I know this gets talked about on MN alot but wanted a hand hold. Last year I had warm white lights on my tree. I have white and silver colour scheme and just felt it looked wrong with the yellow of the lights against the crisp white and silver. This year i bought some cool white ones and they are lovely on the tree. However, I wanted some lights inside my window and assumed they should match so got cool white too. I've spent a pretty penny on all these lights and think I made a mistake. DP will leave me if I change them as the lot were fifty pounds in total. Have I made a massive boo boo?

Just get some warm white ones OP.

frozendaisy · 02/12/2024 18:24

On the flip side I would leave H if he stopped me buying fairy lights, we have plenty. I would still buy more, and have this season, I just find new places to hang them.

Put the cool whites in the porch or somewhere darker and get warm white for the window

Or as someone on another thread suggested, you can colour in led fairy lights with sharpie markers.

I bought a box (new box) in November of what said was warm white lights. They are were not they were cool, or at least cooler than I expected.

They are now pink, blue, purple, turquoise, orange, yellow, lime green and another blue sharpie coloured lights.

Much prettier do that, clearly the full random spectrum of colours would possibly not be your style, but what about a pale pretty pink, or pale orange, or bit of both?

LoafofSellotape · 02/12/2024 18:26

Take them back and get warm ones if that's what you want but won't the mix of the two bother you then?

frozendaisy · 02/12/2024 18:27

Not the best image granted but you can sort of get the idea

Just colour them in!

200 light string took about an hour, best have them on whilst doing it so you can see any gaps

frozendaisy · 02/12/2024 18:30

The kids now want fairy lights in their rooms and the youngster wants hand coloured in ones so I am doing another string this weekend

@SnapdragonToadflax our house is parquet wood floors with all neutral decor - walls are white though. The lights just haven't made it look cozy at all. Maybe I can damage them accidentally when I take them down so I have to buy new ones next year. 😀

Neutral colours and white walls.. I'm not sure the colour temperature of the xmas lights would really make that much difference to the warmth and cosiness of the room. You're expecting a lot from a small detail.

Good to know that you can colour them in. I bought some that were cooler than expected and I can't take them back so that's a great solution, thanks!

Unless you're on a tight budget, can you not buy a set of warm white for the window and try those, and if you prefer it then leave them up and move the icy white ones to somewhere else? You could wind them round the spindles just under the bannister rail, or along the skirting board going up the stairs? Or in a frosted garland with some red berry picks? Or if they're outdoor compatible maybe put them on a bush in your back garden? You've loads of options really

After scrolling through tik tok I believe I have what's known as a tacky Christmas tree 🤣 I absolutely love it and wouldn't change it.

I think you should choose one or the other, mixed white and warm looks terrible. Which one you prefer is down to personal preference really- but cool white with white and silver does sound nice!

I agree all my lights are warm white, I bought a new pre lit garland for the fire surround at the weekend supposedly warm white, they were definitely not! They were the brightest white lights I had ever seen and probably could be seen from space, they looked awful with the warm white lights on the tree, looked totally wrong, they had to be returned.

@PotOfViolas ok I have pictures. I've turned on my other lights too that are warm white. It looks wrong together doesn't it? Plus we have wood burner so you get a yellow glow from that.

I think that looks beautiful OP

Jooolz1 · 03/12/2024 16:19

Plus, I told DP and he said "oh but I really like them" so I'm gonna have to put up with it now. Maybe he will have forgotten the 50 quid by next year.

I'd maybe move the warm light on the hearth to somewhere else so you don't get the contrast. But they are christmas lights, they always look lovely.

gamesconsoler · 03/12/2024 16:37

I like them, OP. The window ones look icicle-y because of the cool colouring!

I can't tell the difference but they look lovely.

ABirdsEyeView · 03/12/2024 16:45

You need the cool ones in the window because they are meant to look like icicles.
Tree looks beautiful - I wouldn't change it.
I think it's okay to have different tones to suit different things, personally.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 03/12/2024 16:48

They look nice.

But at risk of overreacting, your DH sounds a bit uptight/controlling. Are you on a really tight budget?

fishfingersandchipsagain · 03/12/2024 16:55

WeeOrcadian · 02/12/2024 17:43

Jesus Christ

Just have whatever lights you like - unless you leave them up yesterday round, nobody gives a fuck

You realise that this is the Christmas board, yes? Where it’s actually perfectly OK to need a hand-hold about having the wrong fairy lights.

It looks fine.

The lights just haven't made it look cozy at all
It's the white walls make it feel like the inside of an igloo, not the lights.

SereneCapybara · 03/12/2024 16:58

Personally I don't like them as they are very chilly and I prefer a warm, cosy glow with trad red, gold and green colours. But I can imagine they would look great with a frosty, glacial look with blue and silver decor - like walking into an ice palace.

So you've got cool white on the tree and also in the window if I've understood? It looks fine to me. I don't think you should change it.
