Posh adult "stocking" presents

I need some posh small presents. 4 for men and 4 for women. Maybe 10/15 quid each? I want them to be a bit out of the ordinary-and something they won't want to recycle immediately. The recipients are between 23 and 28.Any ideas?

Labour and Wait do various bits and pieces that some of your more utilitarian loving giftees might like.

"skew warm/cold" in this context to me means that if you make a list of people you want to buy presents for, it tends to have more people from warmer/colder areas. Don't think it's a new expression-I am older than God (to quote my late father) and I understood it!

Definitely not a new expression!

dudsville · 27/10/2024 09:49

I've enjoyed reading this. It got me into the swing of things. I used to get all my gift buying done by the end of November, and that had fallen by the wayside in recent years. Our only spontaneous gift giving is in the form of these smaller stocking purchases, so this has given me a few ideas so I'm going to get started today!

CurlewKate · 27/10/2024 09:59

@jacksonlambsregulardisorder oh my! In another incarnation, I am going to LIVE a Labour and Wait lifestyle! Is anyone old enough to remember Pedlars? There was also a German company called Manufactum....

Lovely thread, apart from the occasional sneering.

I’m not at all posh but here are some things I think would be nice:

Second the Lamy Safari fountain pen - you can get them engraved on Cult Pens for a couple of pounds extra

Local honey, jams, chutneys or pickles

French bars of soap

Tiny hanging picture frames from Oliver Bonas - I buy vintage stamps to frame in them

Neals Yard bubble bath

Edibles such as posh Turkish delight or chocolate coated dates

Chanel lipsticks- with an offer you can get them for a bit over £30 and they are without a doubt the nicest I’ve ever used

Papier notebooks are beautiful but I’m not convinced they’re worth the price

Mini bottles of champagne with some nice cheese straws or something

Really good chai tea and a ‘posh’ mug (Denby, Emma B or Le C)

A beautiful Christmas tree decoration from Liberty or Fortnums

Lipbalm from Milk makeup brand

Mermaid Gin is pretty and comes in a mini gift set as well.

I am also old ! I know what skew means but not heard it used in that context - or I have but it would have more filler words. Interesting to hear new phrases though.

Another old gimmer here, but I (after a couple of reads) understood 'skewing cold/hot' to mean 'leaning towards'. Does anyone know what 'skew-whiff' means, these days?

Truffle honey is delicious on hard cheese like a nice parmesan but also nice on things like pizzas/toasties etc so it actually gets used. Also love the Wilderbee hot honey for the same uses - £10 so a nice stocking filler IMO.

Ha not heard that for ages, means squint where I am from

It does - and has done all my life, to me. But I used it in conversation with some youngsters (teens/twenties) the other day and, after asking me to repeat it several times, they concluded they'd never heard it before!

My small contribution: Neat handwash kit. Very eco, fun to wash your hands in a smoosh of foam, and they smell nice (fresh, herby).

The bottles don't last terribly well - the white coating comes off - but they look good for long enough to use all three of your included concentrates.

agreed, these are absolutely vile and would be straight in a charity shop!

they wouldn't be to glad to get one off me. I've got a rare name. the chances of someone buying it are very slim 😂

That's why stuff you can eat or drink and get rid of is such a good idea. Soap and flowers come into that category too.

if they like getting flowers, a nice thing would be a promise to deliver flowers in January.
January always feels so dull after the sparkle and colour of Christmas, and you can really feel in a bit of a slump. some nice, bright flowers can be a real pick me up at that time.

I'd like a pet ferret or three

I love ferrets! they're so much fun. not really in a position to have them now, but grew up with them and they're such entertaining, funny goofballs.

OnionBag · 27/10/2024 13:02

If something has gone wrong we would say it’s gone “skew-whiff” 😄

I love the meal planner journal. Can you give me an idea where to get one?

Paperchase always used to have things like that. and recipe files, fitness planners, wedding planning folders and so on. they're worth checking out for that sort of thing.

I bought a lovely Liberty London cracker last year that was around that budget.
If the person does a craft or is crafty a mini crochet kit or a handmade crochet hook- (Etsy)
A silk pillowcase.
Nice gifty things on Lisa Angel or Not on the high street.
Holly & Co is a good place to find gifts from independent designers.
If they're into music- Rough Trade records has some good merch. They also sell mini 'dolls' like Mattel type things in famous musician styles like sex pistols, Jimi Hendrix etc..bit odd but different.
Musician- cd's, vinyl record cleaning cloth, guitar plecs, chord book, Plec cutter (like a hole punch to make your own plecs)
Cool music related book I had my eye on 'us and them' is about Hipgnosis the company that designed loads of famous album covers. It's on the Rough Trade website.
Emma Bridgewater 1/2 pint mug.
If they like trains the London transport.museum has good stuff on their website shop.

we got my Mum Sid and Johnny last year. she loves them.

they're displayed with her Taxidermy sex pistols themed squirrels (taxidermy is her retirement hobby, but the squirrels always turn out looking a bit demented, so she's dressed them as Sid, Nancy and Johnny)

but yeah, her hobbies and interests may not be considered typical :P

I got a Star Wars Mr. Potato Head. Loved it!

Poffy · 27/10/2024 13:46

@Flustration I love those memo pads, took some tracking down.
I'm buying for DSs partner who is 25 but not into brands, labels or cosmetics. She will definitely love those.
I'd love lots of things on here. I think I should make a wish list. DC tend to go for grand expensive gestures but I would much prefer lots of little luxury bits.

Me & my bff always try to buy something special within a tight budget for Christmas & birthdays. This is what we’ve got each other in the past:

Turtle Doves wrist warmers
Space eye masks which heat up
MAC eyeshadow
Nespresso x Liberty mug
Personalised vintage spoon (to go with above mug)
Liberty silk headband (a lucky sale find)
Jo Loves perfume pen
&Other Stories gold hoop earrings
Candle subscription
Book subscription

This year I’m eyeing a gold bar necklace from Oliver Bonas but it’s £20 over budget. Instead I might get an Emma Lewisham mini skincare set which although is currently £15 over budget, should go down over Black Friday.
