Posh adult "stocking" presents

CurlewKate · 23/10/2024 12:41

I need some posh small presents. 4 for men and 4 for women. Maybe 10/15 quid each? I want them to be a bit out of the ordinary-and something they won't want to recycle immediately. The recipients are between 23 and 28.Any ideas?

if you have a millennial daughter who was a Jacqueline Wilson fanatic as a child then Wilson has brought out an adult book called “think again” which is a follow up on the “girls” series where the characters are now adults

Wow thanks dd2 will love this

If you get it from Waterstones they give it to you with a matching tote bag! (Good for food shops/gym/lunch for work!)

So many lovely ideas-thank you. I'm compiling a spread sheet as we speak! Keep them coming thought- I'm sure it's not just me looking for this sort of thing! Incidentally- this is way outside my budget for this "project" but someone gave me this for my birthday and it's absolutely lovely. Mine is dark green and bright pink. The giver knows me well! tomsstudio.com/collections/wren

@CurlewKate apologies for the derail (loving this thread BTW!) but pls could you let me know more about the Toms studio pens....I keep seeing these all over my SM and am v tempted...I have a 'big' birthday coming up and thinking that I might put one on my list with a multi set of inks! Which one(s) do you have? There are so many lovely ones....I like the idea of a fountain pen but with a 'calligraphy-esque' slant.... Thank you!

MerelyPlaying · 26/10/2024 20:19

Some great ideas here. It just goes to show how different we all are, I love soap and candles and prefer consumables to ‘stuff’.

A friend bought me a personalised wine glass a few years ago, none of my wine glasses match anyway and so if friends are over I use it because I always know which one is mine. I certainly don’t think it’s tacky.

It’s great to have such lovely suggestions on here, but no need for the rather dismissive criticisms. We probably all know what our nearest and dearest would prefer and it’s not what everyone else would like!

I love the meal planner journal. Can you give me an idea where to get one?

You can get lovely personalised ones from Papier

CurlewKate · 26/10/2024 21:19

@AlwaysRoomForGin This is an underailable thread! I have the Wren-and I love it. It's the refillable rollerball and it's so smooth and lovely to use. I only use it for writing
though, so I don't know about drawing. The Wren only takes fountain pen ink-I tried using drawing ink because of the lovely colours, but it clogged it up. But that's the only drawback I've found. They feel so well made and come in such good colours. It makes me happy every day.

Anoisagusaris · 26/10/2024 22:08

My 20’s definitely did not require posh olive oil or a cheese knife……things have obviously changed since the late 90s/early noughties 😆

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 24/10/2024 22:50

Ah you see Aquascutum for me is what 'the old people' (poshly) would have worn. So it has all come round. (Yeah that's the old Abercrombie CEO but so often there's a culture...).

What climates/regions do they live or travel in? Mine skew cold so things like fjallraven are more all-age (I've been lectured on the miracle of merino undies by a 30-something native of Deep Coldness but couldn't really recommend her choices as stocking fillers!) Skewing warm would mean different treats. Even Aberdeen vs Brighton would mean different treats!

What do you mean by ‘skew’? It’s not a word I see in this context…..is another sign that I’m behind the times??

Hotel chocolate is generally not nice, HOWEVER they do little chocolate macarons for about £9.95 that I can attest are very nice. I like the white choc and milk choc one. Only thing worth buying there, aswell as the ice cream/coffee.

Do you think you are the only person who has tried Hotel Chocolat and their macarons? 👍

YorkieTheRabbit · 26/10/2024 22:38

@Everleigh13 Thanks for the jigsaw recommendation, I’ve just ordered two 😊

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 26/10/2024 23:17

Hotel Chocolat is mostly terrible quality for texture and aftertaste, but they are prettily packaged and provide a chocolate hit. Fine if you are buying for someone who's not a gourmet but enjoys the look of a gift, and a comforting sugar rush/cocoa hit. Macarons -- I've known someone to insist on https://www.laduree.co.uk/ but a lot of places do excellent macarons; they are not so complicated.

What about a gift box of East Asian or Middle Eastern or Bengali sweets, if the people you're buying for like cuisines from those areas? There are lovely and unusual colours and flavours.

@Anoisagusaris by 'skew' I mean that if someone did a graph of the temperatures of where I frequent, it's going to tend to cold, not entirely, but probably more than the average for holidays/work travel as described by Mumsnetters.

Annnnd a few more for the trend-oriented, social media influenced type 20s girlies.

  • satin pillow case from kitsch
  • Chelsea peers pyjamas (very soft, cute designs, true to size)
  • If she’s got dyed blonde hair and uses purple shampoo, treat her to the Olaplex purple shampoo - it’s more expensive than most brands and very much something she may not want to splash out on herself
  • Gisou honey infused hair perfume
  • Abbott Lyon name or starsign necklace
  • Drunk Elephant bronzi drops
  • A seletti makeup bag (very cool designs)
  • white crew socks from an “it” brand with logo on (adanola, Alo, gymshark, sweaty betty)
  • adanola hoodie
  • again for the gym, if she uses the weights there then lifting straps (to protect hands) ankle straps to clip onto cable machine from Bear Grip are a winner. Nice to have your own rather than using the grubby communal gym stuff.
  • also in gym theme - really good quality barbell pad because the gym ones are always horrid (get a bright colour - not generic black as easier not to get mixed up in the gym)

Also if you have a son/daughter who is 16-25, TikTok might be your friend here. Search “Christmas haul” and see what’s trendy.

A book voucher? Or even a book you know they'd enjoy?

I read it as eschew, but does that make sense?

RedRosesPinkLilies · 27/10/2024 07:15

Really good thread - am keeping it to read later - am on holiday now
so this may have been suggested already - a voucher for an experience they might like - eg; escape room? Could be for cinema or restaurant too
Apologies if that’s already been suggested

PermanentTemporary · 27/10/2024 07:25

Just bought a couple of things for dh yesterday which I'm pleased with -

Gingerbread Chai teabags from Bird & Blend. They smell so lovely.

Cliftonville suspension bridge fridge magnet from the SS Great Britain museum shop - bit niche but translatable to other interests! We use fridge magnets a lot so it's not that random.

CurlewKate · 27/10/2024 07:42

@PermanentTemporary One of the unintended consequences of getting it kitchen done is a non magnetic fridge door. It makes me sad!

Has anyone tried these chocolates? I've seen them in shops
https://doisyanddam.com/

For vegan chocolate, the smarties ones are good. The dark chocolate drops I think they are - anyway they look like smarties. Obviously if you’re not vegan, then not worth it. But for vegan choc, I think they’re better than NOMO. (I’m not vegan, but a friend is so I’ve tried them.).

CurlewKate · 27/10/2024 08:35

@TorroFerney @Anoisagusaris
"skew warm/cold" in this context to me means that if you make a list of people you want to buy presents for, it tends to have more people from warmer/colder areas. Don't think it's a new expression-I am older than God (to quote my late father) and I understood it!

Lol I know, but I was honestly a bit shocked how much I liked their macarons (the rest of their choc is usually not good at all).

I got dh a fortnum and mason truffle honey he liked a lot. Maybe too old for that group though. I hate truffle but he loves it so he can add to things.

I was intrigued so googled it.
Because I don't live in the UK it won't let me just read about it. A huge big "Choose your country " thingy is blocking it.
When I do choose my country and do a search for the product it says it can't be found.
Ugh Fortnum & Mason sort your website out !
I could he visiting your shop tomorrow to buy it and bring it back home with me.

Sorry for the derail.
Great ideas on here.

Same here. I wanted to have a look to see what DH could buy and bring home, but no..had to shop elsewhere than Fortnum & Mason.

Very local honey, possibly in the form of honeycomb, though there's an ewww factor to honeycomb to people who aren't adventurous with texture or dislike bees. Local beekeepers may have other gifts, e.g. beeswax candles.

Tool for finding local honey near you in the UK:

I'm starting to realise how many of my gift ideas come from random conversations with strangers who have put up a booth somewhere.

BBKA National Honey Day

The British Beekeepers' Association celebrates National Honey Day on 21st October each year.
