What is your wrapping theme for this year?

One of my favourite bits of Christmas is working out my wrapping theme -last year I did brown paper, red and white twine and holly leaves. One year I did Navy with white snowflakes and glittery ribbon with a white pom pom tucked in.

What's your theme or ideas for this year?

Agree brown kraft paper does look nice with little natural bits like pine cones, or sweets tied on.

RedVanYellowVan · 08/10/2024 13:36

Brown paper here with a different colour of cord for each person. The cord gets reused year after year.

The paper gets thrown into a large clean garden tub (there has been known to be a bit of competitiveness about aim and distance) then over the next couple of weeks it gets shredded and layered on the compost heap with leaves and vegetable peelings.

LOVE THIS!! 😍

90's gangsta is my general wrapping style.

mondaytosunday · 08/10/2024 13:43

Last year I did retro, getting mostly used paper off of eBay.
This year the theme is red and gold. The tree is a bit all sorts - the theme is mostly confined to dining table and mantle and door decorations but I'll definitely use more of my existing paper that's in the predominantly red or gold colour way.
I'll need to get some red fairy lights as I used retro multi coloured ones last year!

JaninaDuszejko · 08/10/2024 13:44

We have so many Amazon fabric bags that I now just use them although the newer ones aren't as pretty as the ones they used to sell. Several family members just send us unwrapped presents so I have to do a lot of wrapping and the bags save time and are better gor the environment. I also reuse gift tags.

Also I find it very bizarre hearing the 90s described as retro.

notnorman · 08/10/2024 13:46

I used Kraft paper and twine one year to look 'fancy' (in my head it looked really sophisticated but in reality it looked like the Amazon man had emptied his van in the living room)

Purplestarballoon · 08/10/2024 13:49

When people say reusable fabric bags do you have to ask for them back once you’ve given the present? Or do you have to wait and hope that it’s “gifted” back to you with your present next year?
I'm considering fabric bags but don’t want to be awkward asking for it back as people might think it’s part of the gift?
We have paper gift bags that circulate the family over the years and a few that go back forth with an old friend 😂

HappyDane · 08/10/2024 13:53

I'll be asking for them back in a breezy, totally non-awkward way. 🙂

We don't do many gifts outside immediate family so would probably stick with paper bags for those people and just use the fabric ones amongst ourselves.

We don't do particular themes colour-wise (same for the tree, it is a multi-coloured riot) but I do love the poncetastic threads and all the making, baking and crafting, I just prefer our overall look to be vaguely coordinated rather than highly curated. Each to their own.

HappyDane · 08/10/2024 14:00

Vaguely coordinated is what I do too.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/10/2024 14:04

I have gone over to fabric bags too (green holly-based pattern on with gold drawstrings), though I realised last year that we have too many small ones and not enough big ones so I will have to ask my daughter to make some more (she has moved out and taken the sewing machine)!

The only people who get their presents wrapped in paper are outside the immediate family and there are very few of them these days for whom we still buy presents. They get whatever is left from the days when I used to buy lots of paper.

Taytocrisps · 08/10/2024 14:06

I usually have a look around the shops and pick up a couple of rolls I like. I really miss Debenham for this - I always got my wrapping paper there. I'm far too busy this time of year to be doing ribbons or fancy trims but if other people enjoy it, that's absolutely fine.

I think that this is a thread to make us more casual mothers feel bad! There is no theme at our house and nor has there ever been. But Christmas is still fun.

I don’t have a theme and I don’t feel bad about it. I do love that some people have themes though, but that just isn’t me 😅. I’ll just pick up some cheap rolls from card factory and frantically wrap Christmas Eve I imagine.

MrsForgetalot · 08/10/2024 14:13

Oooh I love a wrapping thread. I had a use-it-up year last year and then I deliberately avoided buying any in the sales to save up the joy of choosing a theme when the shops are full of choices. Otherwise it’s a struggle not to buy next years, and maybe the year after too! But I’m not quite ready yet to plunge into Christmas shopping yet.

Some of my favourites of previous years have been vintage 80’s, tartan and velvet, vintage maps, and snowy Dutch canal houses.

zeitweilig · 08/10/2024 14:13

Not generating loads of unnecessary waste.

where did you get the vintage 80s ones? and the snowy dutch houses sound gorgeous! I love a christmas village/ row of shops pattern

Ooh I love a wrapping theme - makes it really clear which presents are from you. Last year I did silver with shades of blue ribbon and the year before I did brown paper with gingham ribbon. Not sure for this year yet, following for ideas 🥰

MrsForgetalot · 08/10/2024 14:30

One of the 80s paper I’d had for a few years. It don’t really fit my style but I held onto it. Then I saw some paper in Flying tiger that had a very vintage vibe, and they were perfect together. I got a bit carried away that year and got coloured tree lights and tinsel too.

Raspberryripple11 · 08/10/2024 14:32

Oooh I love this thread! Already so excited for Christmas!
Last year I did similar to you - brown paper, red and white twine, dried orange, cinnamon and berries.
Haven’t decided yet this year, so loving all the inspiration I’m getting from this thread!

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/10/2024 14:34

It has never occurred to me to have a theme. I start with using up last year's paper and buy more if necessary.

SpikeyHousePlant · 08/10/2024 14:37

No theme here but…

I make sure I don’t use any leftover ‘father Xmas’ paper that He used for presents.

I hide that paper as to not go and spoil anything. 🎅🏽

PlantDoctor · 08/10/2024 14:38

I tend to buy similar colours each year so they sort of match! I have mostly green and red tartan, brown paper with Christmas trees or stars on, and random dogs with hats for kid gifts!

I guess you could say vaguely traditional is my theme (for adults). I wish I was fancy enough to add more decorations. Maybe I should collect some bits and bobs on walks!

GPNightmare · 08/10/2024 14:44

I love a good wrapping theme but mine are largely based around my millennium year theme of gold and silver as I try to reuse the bags, ribbon and boxes I bought in 1999 😂 I craft decorations from scraps to try and change things up each year. No idea what it will be this year yet but I have a lot of red felt… maybe embroidered felt hearts that can be reused as tree decorations next year.

I am moving towards fabric wrapping though. I bought some gold fabric last year that didn’t cost much more than fancy wrapping paper at £4 a metre (136cm wide).

Ophy83 · 08/10/2024 15:11

I like the idea of saving the Amazon packing paper for wrapping. Maybe with brightly coloured ribbon and some charity shop baubles
