The toy they actually played with

Hi, with Christmas on its merry way, I wondered if people might share what toys their children have that have proven worth the money?

We were given a Toot Toot pirate ship. I wouldn’t have guessed it, but my kids have had loads of use out of it. I’d definitely recommend it for young ones.

The box.

Things you might actually buy, though... we've had a lot of use out of toy food, also a toy farm with animals and a tractor, and Duplo. The toy pram is also a firm favourite.

DD is 4. For her first birthday she got a little plastic teaset that comes in its own case. It was about a fiver from Wilko, and still gets used often.

For her second she got a wooden ice cream store from GLTC which is still used pretty much daily - I think just about the best thing we’ve ever bought her - https://www.gltc.co.uk/products/lolly-scoop-ice-cream-stall?sku=18065060875305211682283510&country=GB&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAqSY0GOvuEagRYuWnY7pOrCcY6fEJ&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjNS3BhChARIsAOxBM6oeJb2vh-E_H3tp5qyo40LiumS8VlGljIt1Z7nGIACUEOSYdzO4Ww8aAmtuEALw_wcB

Magnetic tiles also getting plenty of love and use here.

From around 3 little board games/ orchard games. I think we played shopping list and pigs in pants pretty much every day for about a year!

Currently obsessed with jigsaws and getting really good at them.

Colour in life size castle
Cars

Paw patrol vehicles feature daily as tripping hazards

Tbskejue · 27/09/2024 07:14

A toy torch, a poppet and a whoopee cushion.

tarheelbaby · 27/09/2024 07:14

The toy baby buggies. We had several all at the same time. They're teens now but they still talk about the one we accidentally left on holiday. It was a small, rickety, maclaren-style, Flowertots one - cost about £7 and most of the relatives declined to buy it b/c it was so cheap and naff. They sprung for more expensive gifts to show their love. But it was DD1's abosolute FAVOURITE, hands down. The flowertots pushchair fit perfectly in my biggest suitcase so we could take it everywhere and it went on all the holidays with us.

Monkeybutt1 · 27/09/2024 07:15

My son is 12 now but when he was young we really got our money's worth from hot wheels cars and the tracks.

I have two girls, aged 6 and 4 this year. Last year they were each given one of these and they are still playing with them all the time 9 months on.

Age about 3 and 4 I bought my DDs one of those fold out schools -about A5 size. They played with it for about 5 years and i bought refills of the admin stuff from amazon.I ended up getting the post office too.I really wasn't expecting them to be such a hit.

TeenToTwenties · 27/09/2024 07:18

Mine got best use from
. Schleich animals
. Duplo to make enclosures for the animals
. Cuddly soft toy animals
She is now studying animal care!

Humanswarm · 27/09/2024 07:19

Lego..from Duplo blocks when younger and then older Lego. We do have rather a lot of it, and storage is an issue but my DS9 still asks for Lego every birthday/Christmas and it's played with daily.

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 27/09/2024 07:20

The toy kitchen and the Brio train set are by far the most played with here. We've had years of use out of them.

Other toys used plenty are a Galt marble run, Lego and dolls.

The only purchase I think has not been worth it is the play house. DD was excited to receive it but it's neglected.

GigiAnnna · 27/09/2024 07:21

My kids range from 7 to 16. Younger boy still plays with action figures, Lego, cars and a magnetic building set. Eldest doesn't play with toys of course but my other two will get the LOL dolls, Sylvanian Families and Barbies out now and again. They all collect plush toys from various Youtube channels. They also enjoy all type of crafts. They are all more into technology than toys right now though and can't see it changing as they are getting older.

Could you possibly post a link to something similar. I’ve googled. It can’t find what you mean. Thanks so much if poss!

We bought a doctors kit for DD when she was about 3, when she was about 8 we added the contents of a real first aid kit. 10 years later, she still has it and won't part with it, although doesn't play with it anymore 😁

Georgie743 · 27/09/2024 07:41

Duplo

elastamum · 27/09/2024 07:44

Brio train set. My DC are now in their 20s. I have still got it and it comes out occasionally for visiting small kids. Keeping it for the grandchildren.

InnerPlop · 27/09/2024 07:46

Wooden train set.
Leap frog ice cream cart - DS had this when he was 1, he's now 6. Him and DS2 still play with it and it's what all the kids gravitate to when they come over!
Fisher price DJ decks. Both boys play with it regularly.
Light up fidget pop game thing.
Henry Hoover cleaning trolley. It has a little broom, mop, dustpan and brush and hand held hoover.
Stretch Armstrong Superman
Squishmallows
The general buckets of plastic animal/dinosaur toys

MiseryIn · 27/09/2024 07:46

@Morasssassafras that's the one we had too and it was used daily!

Also the little dolls buggy and the toy food.

isthereaway · 27/09/2024 07:47

Brio train set (with non brio add ons!)
Toy kitchen & food. Toy shop / theatre (wooden 2 sided one, £££ but worth it)
Lego. Trampoline. Books, books, books

MySocksAreDotty · 27/09/2024 07:53

Bikes for boys aged 6 and 10. Bought them second hand from the Bike Club eBay shop who did an extra discount for buying two.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 27/09/2024 08:02

When my DD turned 1 she got a vtech train which had pop up animals. Much loved.
Also megablocks, a shape sorted ark and garden.

I was clearing out recently and found a foam tile puzzle thing which is currently her favourite thing.

Dolls and push chairs definitely.

For her second this Xmas we have recommended to family as we know she'll play with them;
Brio train set
Magnetic tiles
Anything to do with dolls
Doctors set
Puzzles

She's still a bit young to play with boxes!
