Poncetastic Christmas 2024

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 25/09/2024 18:41

@vivajen hasn't posted on MN for a year so I've taken the bull by the horns. I can't wait any longer !
Wherever you are, Fellatio, here's to you. I hope you're brining a turkey and had crafting authentic organic woven tinsel somewhere.
"OK, first of all, I know it's still September by we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom.
So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobs worth ponce, join me on this thread.
Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapés and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.
Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessie’s' on the packet, this is not the thread for you".

I'm hosting Christmas this year so looking for some poncey ideas.

Bluebellsinthewind · 25/09/2024 21:42

Is this thread for planning homemade Christmas bits and bobs? If so, count me in Grin 🎄🤶🎅🎁🍁🍂🍷

Really looking forward to Christmas this year. Ds, Dil, Gkids are spending Christmas with us for the first time. So, looking forward to spoiling my family 💖 dd is a tween and is always too busy 😪 dh is laid back and goes with the flow. I feel its my first ever Christmas just me sorting out the bits. Not going to get sad about it because, that's life. I am going to embrace it all 🌟

So far I have tried and tested, sausage rolls (homemade) for the buffet, I can't remember what else. Started thinking about games, presents and food/drink list. Also started a deep clean list for the house.

This thread has gotten me all Christmas excited 🎄Grin oh, I also saved a thread on here that's a list of Christmas movies 🎬

I love the Poncetastic thread.

So far I have placed my order at the butcher, bought the chocolate for the Yule log filling and made (and tested 😬) raspberry gin.

I'm away from home for the next two weekends but once I get back I will start my fruit soaking for the Christmas cake and render down the bag of duck skin that I have been stashing in the freezer.

I'm knitting Christmas socks currently

What Moomin accessories have you got planned @Trumpton?

Right @TheWoollybacksWife you have the kind of life I want to have but don't have time for right now.

What is the bag of duck skin for?
Have you frozen the chocolate filling? Can I have your recipe?!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 25/09/2024 21:48

I too, am hosting. Our house is about to go on the market and we have one on mind we want to buy...so maybe we will be hosting from our new home!

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/09/2024 22:04

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy if I buy duck breast for stir fry then I skin them and freeze the skin. Last year I rendered them down chucked them in the slow cooker on low and walked away for a few hours and then poured the resulting liquid into a couple of lidded tubs that went into the freezer when cool. I then defrosted them to use for duck fat roasties - I used one a couple of weeks before Christmas as a trial run just to check that it was ok before I used the other on the big day.

The Yule log filling/icing is just ganache. I use half dark, half milk chocolate and I buy it from Aldi as their chocolate is delicious and doesn't contain palm oil. I'd like to say there's a recipe but it's roughly 1:1 ratio with cream.

These days most of my poncing is food or drink related 😂

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 25/09/2024 22:08

Ooh exciting to see this thread!
Last year I made DGC's advent calendar so I've only got the filling part to do this year.
I'm going to make my cake in the next few weeks if I have time.
Last year I had 10 to cook for on Christmas Day but everyone brought something so that was fab.

I'm going to an Autumn wreath workshop soon and will use any tips to make my Christmas wreath.

I've learned how to embroider cardigans and jumpers with names and things so I'm looking forward to making one for our tiny DGC this year. Just about to start on an Autumn one too.

I've also been painting little wooden pieces that will possibly be gifts if I think they're good enough.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 25/09/2024 20:08

It's pretty easy, if you don't want to talk about Christmas in September
a. Don't come on the Christmas Board
b. Don't come on the thread where the title clearly suggests we are talking about highly overblown crimbo plans
c. Don't be miserable

Edited

Never mind coming on to the Poncetastic threads telling us all we can't do the thread the way it's been done for years and years by now. 🙄

Anyway. Peace and good will.🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

Annual Christmas namechange! I'm the resident Dane. 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰

Poncy cards have been bought (photo attached), chilli jam has been made, Christmas magazine inserts have been dug out for sombre and serious perusal, and I've got my planner ready.

I do actually prefer quite a low key Christmas, so I poncify things in a very restrained way.

@Trumpton I love your Moomin theme!

EternallyDelighted · 25/09/2024 22:38

Oh, I forgot to do a Christmas namechange, oops.

DS is back to uni at the weekend and the poncing can start. I have bought paperwhite narcissi, started some prepared hyacinchs (always done these the first week of term in September) and started thinking about cakes, puddings etc. Last year I made mini Christmas cakes in baked bean tins, I saved the tins for this year. We don't eat much cake so I iced three of them and froze the rest to use as and when which was nice. Other regular poncings here are Jamie Oliver's make ahead gravy, homemade cinnamon buns for Christmas morning, cutting our own tree at a farm. Would like to do more decorative things this year.

Elderberrier · 25/09/2024 22:49

Oooh this is all very lovely. I had a Xmas planner arrive today. We were going to be hosting 14 but plans have just changed so down to 7. Determined to space things out in a way that makes it more enjoyable than some years have been, so am here to learn!

Lalanbaba · 25/09/2024 22:57

Ahhh poncing! Missed it last year as we went away.
This year we are staying home!
I have started the gingerbread gin and bramble whisky. I would like to try another festive flavour but can't find another similar. Any suggestions?
I will as usual prepare in advance our Xmas dinner, so I can enjoy the day without having to dissappear in the kitchen.
I have made a big batch of sausage rolls but not sure is going to last 😅
I want to bake something festive for the school xmas fete to raise funds and was toying with the idea of mini xmas cakes. Will be this something you would buy? Alcohol or no alcohol in them?

Here's last year's tree to kick it off

A triumph !

Fab Yule Lous to be back poncers!

We're going out for Christmas dinner this year. Not sure how I feel about that but after several years of hosting 15-20 family and friends I declared that I needed a break, so here we are. 10-12 joining and will still come back to ours afterwards for cheese and maybe a poncey chilli jam or two.

This year I intend to:

  1. work on my half finished Christmas cross stitch (when I find it Blush, it's in a "safe place").

  2. forage for cones and holly and make wreaths. This is one of my favourite festive things to do and they look amazing.

  3. make our usual Christmas cakes (Delia creole and Nigel Slater) and attempt some little tuna tin cakes for poncing up the cheeseboards throughout December.

  4. Add to my Christmas lemax village and build a higher display stand for it.

  5. Make Christmas bead bracelets with DS as table gifts for those joining us on Christmas Day.

  6. Test some recipes for "nibbles" for Boxing Day. I'll have more energy since I'm not doing the big roast this year!

Thank you @StiffyByngsDogBartholomew for starting the lovely thread.

Welcome to any new people, to those in new houses, those with aspirations which might not get realised this year as well as those with polished timetables.

@Trumpton I'm so looking forward to seeing the Moomins arrive in your sunroom.

My goal for the weekend is mskjng mincemeat, probably Mary Berry's recipe which uses butter instead of suet.

Any recommendations for vegetarian pastry recipe that rolls thin please?

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 26/09/2024 08:26

Lovely. Am actively considering stir up Sunday and the making of the cake. I actively consider making it every year with approx a 25% chance of seeing it through…

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 26/09/2024 08:29

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat what do you want to make with the pastry ?

NoItsStillNighttimeDarling · 26/09/2024 08:31

Ohhhhhh lovely stuff yes please.

I am hosting for the first time this year and have paid to have the house professionally decorated. I feel so embarrassed but so happy 😆

Mince pies. Just can't seem to crack pastry. I'm thinking it's the lack of lard?

Decorated house sounds wonderful.

InconvenientPeg · 26/09/2024 08:37

Love these threads.

I basically read them, ooh and ahh over the ideas every year and then don't do anything different. I did however see a tiktok about popcorn garlands made of yarn this morning and I need a new project to justify sitting in front of the TV, so maybe that can be my 'thing' this year!

lovelylight · 26/09/2024 08:50

I absolutely love these threads - I'm a novice poncer myself but I can't wait to live vicariously through all your incredible talents! This year I'm trying my hand at a few cross-stitch Christmas decorations, planning to hack away blindly at the overgrown foliage in the garden frolic through the local woodland in search of foraged greenery for a wreath, and I may even attempt a Christmas cake.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/09/2024 09:15

Well I'm a bit late to the party. Pondering on my lonesome I was on the Preamble thread, four hours after the official thread had opened. Thanks to @NowLightOneThousandChristmasLights for pointing me in the right direction.

I've posted a link on the old thread to point any stragglers here.

Anyway, reporting for Poncing duty.

Hohohopeful · 26/09/2024 09:25

I was on a night out last night having a lovely dinner when I suddenly realised the date and was genuinely sorry for a minute that I was missing all this fun!

I love this thread. I aim to do better this year in actually joining in as all of my children are now in school. I have so far done a good job of emptying the freezer. I was delighted when out last night when someone said "we can do that at your Christmas party" to me. I had hoped to have an annual gathering of friends, but last year was the first time we actually managed it so I'm pleased it has become an institution.

I love seeing all you have made. (And Tumpton's sun lounge which defines this thread for me).

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/09/2024 09:26

I see we had our first dickhead within an hour of the thread starting. I wonder if we will also be told off by some randomer for use of the word Ponce this year?

I'm currently rearranging my lounge and got rid of a sofa this week. New table in situ from last night. It looks so different and is giving me so many new options for poncery. I feel a festive frisson of excitement.

NowLightOneThousandChristmasLights · 26/09/2024 09:50

I did the paperwhites several years ago but it turns out neither DH nor I like the scent. Might do hyacinth this year, but if I do I'll buy in my poncing at the last minute instead of lovingly nurturing them from bulbs.

I've got crochet hook and wool from a few years ago but as yet have never attempted even a tiny star or snowflake...I aspire (in my head, not by action, clearly!) to become good enough to make a whole village à la @lucysmam. Someday.

I've got half a cross-stitched card somewhere in my crafting stash. Might finish that this year.

Yes I thought the seed cards could probably be made quite easily but that was never going to happen, tbh, so I bought them instead!

We're going to make mincemeat soon; have made Delia's and Mary Berry's in the past but last year we tried the Hairy Bikers' recipe and DH liked it a lot so we'll do that again this year.

I've already got boiled beetroot of various colours in the freezer ready to roast on the day. Will make braised red cabbage soon. We were thinking of doing duck so I already have two stashed away in the freezer but now we've settled on rolled sirloin instead. I might still do one duck as a supplement, though. Will also pick up a small turkey as we must have sandwiches over the festive period but prefer not to have the bird as centerpiece for Christmas dinner.

I bought a Nordic Ware pan last year but ended up just admiring the beauty of the tin and didn't get around to actually making the dinky little cakelets...so that's definitely a priority for this year. Need to do a practise run!

This year I'm going to treat myself to the book Advent by Anja Dunk and am going to do at least one thing from there - Dried Pear Fruit Loaf, in lieu of Christmas cake.

@EternallyDelighted yes I would buy a homemade mini Christmas cake for sure. I'm toying with the idea of making a small batch of tin sized cakes, icing one for DH and possibly one for BIL too, and freezing the rest. I think if you set yourself up with a festive namechange on your account and then report one of your comments and ask MNHQ very nicely to change it for you, they would be quite happy to retroactively apply it to this thread (if it matters enough to you!).

@LalanbabaI have made a few different ones (mostly Nigel's recipes from Christmas Chronicles) but can't actually remember any right now other than cranberry gin which I just found on t'internet -- was a great festive colour and worked very well for us and our tastes in cocktails. We don't make much anymore because we don't see many people over Christmas these days and we don't want to drink too much ourselves (middle aged now and feeling the effects much more keenly!), but I might still do one.

@NoItsStillNighttimeDarling that takes poncing to a whole new level! I heartily approve! 😁

@Hohohopeful that's really lovely. There's a special kind of happiness in welcoming friends into one's home at Christmas, I think.

@RainbowZebraWarrior I had to really give it to one utter numpty on the Christmas Fridge thread a few years ago. My god the madness was strong during lockdown.

Also thanks for linking on thx Preamble Thread, totally forgot I'd said I was going to do that. 😳🙄

Welcome to everyone, and may we all be filled to the brim with festive fun and cheer!
