Advent Calendars

Georgieporgie29 · 22/08/2024 21:10

I’m just starting to think about advent calendars for Christmas and I wondered if anybody had tried the sweetzy one before?

I was also thinking of the food one that lots of people seem to get (but I can’t remember the name of it)

Any other recommendations would be great DS19, DD13, DH42 am trying to steer clear of makeup this time round (and I’ve already pre-ordered mine ☺️)

Thank you

@Georgieporgie29 it was this one. If I recall correctly it was a bit difficult to get some items out as they had slipped to the bottom of the box so might be best to store laying down! It was £25

We get the sweetzy advent calendar every year, we really love it. It’s huge and has a good selection of sweets.

thursdaymurderclub · 25/08/2024 20:23

i always make my own... the calendars ive had since my girls were little and i decide on a theme, i then pass them over end of november.. i make sure each DC of the family gets one, and now i have GC i need to get my hands on something similar.

i dont think i will ever not do advent calendars...

Vermin · 25/08/2024 20:33

The Paxton and Whitfield cheese calendar (2 separate parcels so it fits in the fridge) is phenomenal but it’s a LOT of cheese!

Aproductofmyera80s · 25/08/2024 22:56

We’ve had the cheese one 2 years in a row, dd loves it aswell, I share it between 3.. and the only one non of us like the dog has 😂

just got DS 16 a lynx one
and literally just ordered dd the soap and glory one she asked for, I was gonna wait but I saw it’s been selling fast and I don’t want to miss it.

I always get myself a really big, glittery, traditional advent calendar. Choosing this year's calendar is one of my greatest joys (I really, really love Christmas!).

I've had a Nespresso one a couple of times, you get a nice gift with it like a lovely mug or something but after seeing it on here, I'm tempted by a Bonne Maman one, we love jam!

katystar · 26/08/2024 16:36

I got DH a chocolate biscuit one from m and s a few years ago which went down well.
Last year I got him a shortbread one which again was well liked.

It is summer.

Its also the xmas forum.

To the OP I bought my advent calendars yesterday. I only buy the cheap character ones but found them really hard to find in shops last year (had to go round dozens of shops and couldn't get the characters I wanted in the end) so when I saw they had just been put out in B&M yesterday I thought I'll beat the rush and get them now so its done.

As like PP though some people just can't let people live their own lives. As I was paying a woman joined the queue behind me and just couldn't keep her thoughts to herself. She very loudly blared 'Oh my god, people are buying advent calendars already'. Her pre-teen aged kid said 'mum' in a shocked voice then walked off clearly embarrassed and she was so loud everyone looked and she seemingly clocked the confused/dirty looks people in the other queue where shooting her so half ass apologized (to her kid not to me even though it was me she attempted to shame for no reason).

Its bizarre, the shop sells them and I bought them, it has ZERO effect on anyone else's life but she just had to be rude for no reason.

LuckysDadsHat · 26/08/2024 17:58

I have splashed out this year and bought a fortnum and mason refillable calendar. The doors and holes are quite big so I am going to be putting different stuff in them. Hot chocolate, tester perfume etc..........

It makes the cost for this year expensive, but for future years it will be a lot cheaper than buying one.

I struggled to get calendars last year as well so totally get why you would be extra prepared this year. I just don’t understand why anyone is bothered by the people that love Christmas and being organised! Don’t they realise they probably wouldn’t have any lovely Christmas memories if it wasn’t for us crazy mums being so organised 😂

Cannot you just enjoy season you are in without skipping one and jumping to one particular winter day?

Georgieporgie29 · 26/08/2024 21:15

Well I’ve bought a sweetly one, just 2 more to decide on.

Really fancied the noodle one but can’t find it anywhere.

Cannot you just enjoy season you are in without skipping one and jumping to one particular winter day?

Believe it or not , I can Multi-Task and I can enjoy the season I am in while looking forwards .
I can plan things and buy ahead to save myself time and money .
I won't be spending loads last minute to find the perfect gift or the chocolate .
I won;t be the miserable git in Superdrugs complaining about the queue in December because I'll be organised .

I also know that December is the month that flue /colds/Covid strikes so if nothing else I'll have what I need .

Second to Christmas I like Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes

Growing up my Mum hated Christmas because she simply CBA with the extra work- she didn't decorate , we got presents of course but I was always aware that my friends and cousins had more put into their Christmases . She didn't cook if there was any way she got out of it , usually a family friend guest or me when I was 10 , cooked .
And her favourite phrase was "Boxing Day is my favourite day , its all over " or "I want to go to sleep and wake up after New Year" .
Yeah , I get it , you CBA and we're not worth making the effort for eh ?

So when posters like yourself come onto he CHRISTMAS THREAD and suck the joy out , and the ones who do the faux Innocent "Oh , is this a THING then" or "Am I being unreasonable to not understand Christmas Eve Bixes or Dec 1st Boxes"

It;s a Thing if you want it to be
Yes you are being unreasonable , what;s to understand ?
And if I can plan things and enjoy the planning then why is it anyone elses business ?
Just don't read Christmas Threads .

I have no interest in Art , or Chickens or designer handbags or many other threads on here . I skim by

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/08/2024 21:37

I like the idea of the Bonne Maman jam one but I'd need to look at the flavours .

Last year I bought Cadbury Chocolate Coin money boxes for my DC ( adults ) much prefered these to the Advent Calendars .

I used to do a Beauty Calendar for DD , a box that I put a re-useable tag on 1-24 and put it in her room early morning . But after three - four years it got difficult to find things , so she has a Dec 1st Box with hair, skin, nail polish and treatments , eyelash serum, shower gel, those eyegel pads , nail file , hand/foot moisture sock/glove , mini perfume ,
She's 22 , it forms part of her Christmas present but she can use it in the lead up to Christmas .

BirthdayRainbow · 26/08/2024 21:42

I have had M & S, Holland & Barrett and I think the Boots MacMillan one was in my basket but I wasn't quick enough.

Some of these sound fabulous and I'm definitely going to chose a food one this year.

It depends in which part of the world you live actually.

DS had a porridge one a few years ago, with different sachets of flavoured porridge and muesli. He loved it! It was from a German company though so they probably won't deliver to the UK anymore.
But if anyone is looking for ideas for a homemade calendar - porridge!

@BaronessBomburst this intrigued me so I went searching. Is it this one? uk.mymuesli.com/gifts/christmas/adventcalendar/porridge

PurBal · 27/08/2024 03:54

The Paxton and Whitfield Cheese one is the best we've had by far.

Can’t you just let people enjoy what they want? No one is stopping you from enjoying this season or anything else.. It really doesn’t affect you at all.
so if you wouldn’t mind leaving us to our planning in the safe space provided for like minded people, we’d be very grateful.

Merry Christmas ☺️

Bilbonne · 27/08/2024 07:21

I quite fancy the cheese one but I'm a bit concerned the cheese might be a bit much as there is only two of us and DH is not that adventurous with cheese, does the cheese have a reasonable date on if there is a bit much

Who is not 'enjoying' anything?

I was in a shop, saw something I knew I would need and bought it. It literally took no extra time than the rest of the shopping I was doing.

A) I have health issue that make winter particularly hard, I don't get to 'enjoy' winter or even function very well in it which make shopping very hard.

B) I get good deals buying everything early which is needed since my ability to work is greatly reduced and we have a very low income

C) I don't have the money, extra time needed or physical ability to trapse round shops in a mad rush in December looking for things that are at peak price and sold out everywhere

There such ignorance, ableism and privilege to people... as mentioned it effects you in no way so why would you go out of your way to put down another person?

ShowOfHands · 27/08/2024 10:51

I do hope that the people who perpetually berate those in the Christmas forum, apply the same principles to everything in their lives. I don't want to be hearing that they've booked a summer holiday, nay even pondered their summer holiday until summer is in full swing. And they had better not buy something they've seen in a shop which is perfect, like a pair of sunglasses or a raincoat, unless it's sunny or raining or applicable right that second. I assume they lollop through life thinking only one thing at a time. Perhaps it seems impossible to them that people can enjoy the moment and plan ahead at the same time. Do they wake up each day and scream "FUCK ME, IT'S TUESDAY, I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING"?

Anyway, I bought this year's advent calendar last January when I happened to be in a Christmas shop in York. It's a very retro picture one. I always have one with pictures in it.

DS had the Dr Who one last year which was brilliant if you're a Whovian.
