Advent Calendars

I’m just starting to think about advent calendars for Christmas and I wondered if anybody had tried the sweetzy one before?

I was also thinking of the food one that lots of people seem to get (but I can’t remember the name of it)

Any other recommendations would be great DS19, DD13, DH42 am trying to steer clear of makeup this time round (and I’ve already pre-ordered mine ☺️)

Thank you

I saw someone had a Buldak ramen advent calendar last year. That would be right up my street as I LOVE ramen noodles 🍜 😋

Ooh that sounds like a good one. Noodles are loved by all in our household

If anyone likes tea Bird and Blend do a great one

Can tell you that the pork scratchings one isn't worth it according to ds small bags of mainly same taste but with different names.

I’d like a really old fashioned one with those 1970s pictures in. Children skating, a robin on a bird table, a snowman, some holly, that sort of thing.

And I might get myself a cheap Cadburys one this year. I like tradition!

Although the jam one sounds interesting @Bilbonne.

It's the Bonne Maman one also mentioned upthread, they have a lot of the more unusual flavours so nice to try different ones. I also save some of the little pots if I don't eat that day's to take away in the caravan.

I think last year there was only one choice. There was a mixture. The swet bags were a good size. I think I will order again this year!

It is summer.

And this is why the Christmas board was set up by MN because people moaned about it being summer.

You can hide the board if you want and maybe check which board the thread is posted under.

Thanks, that was also one I was thinking of so will disregard that one now.

DS had a porridge one a few years ago, with different sachets of flavoured porridge and muesli. He loved it! It was from a German company though so they probably won't deliver to the UK anymore.
But if anyone is looking for ideas for a homemade calendar - porridge!

MsSquiz · 23/08/2024 11:55

I always try to buy DH a "different" one, he usually gets me a John Lewis one.

I've previously bought for him:
Fenwick food
Pork scratchings
Jelly beans
Swizzles sweets
A homemade haribo calendar
Gin
Popcorn

I was going to pre order the sweetzy one for him, but haven't yet. I do often order him sweets from there though

Why do you have different ones each year? In our family we look forward to the Lindt chocolate ones every year - circa £15 ones, and of course one each!

Leeds2 · 23/08/2024 16:04

Never had it, but the Lush one always looks nice.
Whittards usually do coffee and hot chocolate ones, in a decent sized, sturdy box with 24 drawers.
For my DD and her American boyfriend, I usually wrap 24 different chocolate bars each, label them with a number and put in a gift bag. Each day is usually the same bar, but different flavours. They like this as they don’t get them very often in the US.

I got my teenagers this last year https://www.harveynichols.com/yummacandy/advent-calendar-325g-976879-na-167424/

really wanted to try https://meltchocolates.com/product/notting-hill-house-advent-calendar/ but was a bit out of budget for 4 kids.

have had the bonne maman one previously and they had some great flavour https://www.bonnemaman.co.uk/advent

Tiptree also have a jam calendar, however they have repeats of the same flavour so have that one a miss https://www.tiptree.com/collections/advent-calendars/products/bus-jam-advent-calendar

Oh that melt chocolate one looks amazing but yes out of my price range too 🤣

I've gone full retro this year and got myself an Advent calendar where you open it and there's a picture behind - from https://mollylemon.com/products/moonlight-advent-calendar-greetings-card

I actually love this

Any advice for making a DIY food/chocolate calendar? Some of the chocolate ones are expensive!!

Finallyiamleaving · 24/08/2024 14:32

Does anyone know when The Perfume Shop’s advent calendar is available. I (DD actually) was too late last year. Is it any good?

A few years ago I got DC the "Illustrated Santa Sleigh Christmas Eve Crate" from No Ordinary Gift on NOTHS £35 initial outlay with "DC's Advent Calendar" on it. Now each year I wrap the gifts in green/red tissue with numbered stickers. I'd be wary of trying to do it cheaper DIY though!! It adds up pretty quickly!

950g pick and mix calendars on offer for a few days at £19.99 www.sosweetshop.co.uk/products/picknmix-advent-calendar-950g

We have had Pringles, an American sweet one, Nespresso, Bonne Maman and Whittards hot chocolate. As well as the usual chocolate ones.
The most popular was Whittards and Nespresso.
This year I have Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate on my radar.
I already have a Liberty and Harrods fragrance on pre order.

IlovePond · 25/08/2024 18:45

I had the H&B tea calendar once - unfortunately I thought the teas tasted a bit dusty and bitter. However, my friend liked it, so I guess it’s a matter of taste.

I think I saw a Jelly Belly a/c somewhere last year, which looked interesting.

JL had a 12 day gin a/c last year in addition to their gin crackers - it was heavily reduced in January, but I restrained myself - looked good, though.

IlovePond · 25/08/2024 18:46

Also, the Kinnerton chocolate a/CS are good for people with nut allergies.

Can I ask what the American sweet one was please? That sounds interesting.
