Mine is still an absolute mess!

I've just gone downstairs and now it's the 28th I feel I need to do something about it.

The dc have toys and clothes scattered everywhere, chocolate wrappers on the floor and glitter everywhere ( don't know where from ). I've just accidentally kicked a die under the sofa which I'll have to get as I know ds will want it later. There are loads of them mini brands lying around just waiting to be stood on.

There seems to be every cup/ glass we own out on the side that needs washing. About 10 loads of laundry to do.

The funny thing is me and dp have been non stop the past few days cooking and cleaning but for some reason it looks like someone has come in, shook our house around and left us the results.

If a visitor turned up this morning, I would have to refuse them entry ( for their own safety).

How is everyone else's houses looking? Please tell me I'm not the only one still falling over stuff left lying around.

I taught my kids from being young to tidy their toys, and they start going upstairs to be put away on Boxing Day.
Sounds like you need a black bag, and to attack the mess. Good luck!

Mickeyfish · 28/12/2023 07:27

Ours is pretty clear now. But im constantly on top of it . We have friends and their kids round today so ive had to tidy a bit the kids rooms were just awful stuff everywhere. It'll prob get messy again today. Im now on my like 5th load of washing since Xmas eve

WinchSparkle80 · 28/12/2023 07:29

Mine is super tidy downstairs as my DH struggles if it’s untidy, but bedrooms and my office an absolute car crash!

I just had to put bins out as all the days are the same??? and tripped over boxes of choc, washing baskets and a reel of sellotape to get to my bin upstairs.

Going to make everyone spend 45 min later tidying and quick clean

Whatdoyouwantforxmas · 28/12/2023 07:29

We have more stuff than storage, and Christmas hasn’t helped!
I am discovering that the kids brand of tidying their room is to shove everything under the bed.
I have huge disruptive plans for the house & many unfinished projects, so it’s going to go well!
am about to get up and start somewhere, anywhere, I don’t know!

Gardeningtime · 28/12/2023 07:29

To be honest, it’s tidy and relatively clean. Cleaner due for her weekly visit today, we all keep on top of it. Stuff away every night and tidy round before bed, everything stacked in dishwasher. Work surfaces cleaned, quick hoover round in the morning.

but I hate mess, and can’t stand to get up in the morning to come down to look at it.

Baystard · 28/12/2023 07:30

Not dissimilar here OP. I try to hang on to the festive mood as long as possible, so I avoid the temptation to tidy up the various presents, but I'm starting to get tired of it all now. When I do start to clear up it will be tempting to clear the decorations too but I like to leave them until after NYE if I can.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 28/12/2023 07:32

We spent yesterday putting all new stuff away, getting the decorations down and now the house is completely back to normal. Spend today sorting it OP and you will feel a lot better. Kitchen is clean but will get a full on clean including the oven on Saturday. I have to start the new year with a lovely clean and tidy house.

BringMeMyOodie · 28/12/2023 07:33

Thankfully my parents took the DC for a few hours yesterday afternoon to allow me and DH time to get our house sorted. Everything has now been, binned/stored/put away and we can actually relax, it's such a good feeling.

headcheffer · 28/12/2023 07:36

Mine is tidy and clean but that's because I'm not in it!! We had Christmas Day there and then on Boxing Day morning me and DH spent one hour on a timer sorting it and were away to a relatives house. We go back today and most of the kids presents are there so I think they'll enjoy getting them all out and playing with them. I keep them in their stocking sacks in the playroom until we go back to work/school and then start putting them away.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/12/2023 07:36

It is immaculate. Last guests went home yesterday morning, all the decorations were taken down and the house cleaned. Today we are packing to head off to the sun for a week.

Upsadiddles · 28/12/2023 07:43

Mine is almost back to normal, just the last few toys to put away from the living room. I tend to get most presents put away on Boxing Day and do a clean on the 27th. I’m a bit out of order though as we are going on holiday so we spent yesterday getting the decorations down (which I don’t normally do until January), getting up to date on the laundry, and packing our cases. So it could still do with a clean. I had a tidy of the kids craft stuff while putting presents away, and also sorted DD2’s outgrown clothes and decluttered my summery clothes and dressing table drawers while packing. I’m feeling vaguely organised and could let in visitors. I was like you yesterday morning though.

Gardeningtime · 28/12/2023 07:46

I would crack down on the throwing rubbish on the floor though op, and leaving it, it’s one thing to have a mess with toys etc,but chucking your rubbish on the floor and leaving it is something else entirely.

just spend a couple of hours, grab a bin bag, get everyone to muck in will be tidy before you know it.

StragglyTinsel · 28/12/2023 07:51

Mine was a disaster yesterday so I blitzed stuff. There are toys all over the floor again rough, because my 3 year old is playing and leaves a trail of detritus in his wake.

bettynutkins · 28/12/2023 08:01

Mine is exactly like yours. Really got to try and tackle it today!

LeonoraFlorence · 28/12/2023 08:12

Toys everywhere!
DH has been trying his best but I went down for some water last night and both main lounge and playroom are wild!

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 28/12/2023 08:14

All tidy bar one room that needs a good sort out. I would say clean but surface clean is more accurate.

NellyWest · 28/12/2023 08:15

Mine is similar. We had a couple of hours without the oldest kids yesterday and while I was trying to sort spare room etc for impending guests, my husband decided NOW is the time to sort out the garage. There’s still wrapping paper all over the living room. I despair.

Not everyone lives in a show home OP, certainly not us! Good luck breaking the back of it!

frozendaisy · 28/12/2023 08:16

Presents opened but in piles under the tree.

Carpet clear enough to hoover most of it.

Kitchen ok ish. Round of washing up and is functional but there is much less surface space than usual.

So in between?

It will get done eventually.

I am going to drink coffee for an hour and read winter murder mysteries before day starts though.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 28/12/2023 08:17

I like to keep new toys downstairs between Christmas and new year. We keep them in their stockings/gift bags etc for the kids to take out and put back as they please.

The Organised Mum method have guided cleans on the app. You have to pay a £3 monthly sub but you get 7 days free trial so you could have a look at that then cancel it next week.

There's one about the in between Christmas and New year clean up which isn't a deep clean and tidy but just the essentials. I did it yesterday and house looked a lot better. Didn't take long at all!

My Decs will be staying up until after new year. To me it is still the Christmas season.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/12/2023 08:20

Mine is fine, astonishingly, apart from our bedroom (which has piles of washing and some presents). We had guests staying for several days, they left and took their stuff with them. Dh hoovered and mopped yesterday, and it's all looking pretty civilised. We have teens rather than little children though, so no piles of toys!

Peridot1 · 28/12/2023 08:22

Clean and tidy but I don’t have young children. Cleaners were in yesterday and we have visitors coming tomorrow so I tidied around for them to clean. Still got some stuff lying around but it is in tidy piles. About to do dishwasher which I didn’t do last night so kitchen is messy.

JollyJellyCat · 28/12/2023 08:23

We had 6 for Christmas day, 8 yesterday, another 8 tomorrow. There's no rubbish but there are definitely too many things everywhere and soooo many leftovers. Washing is up to date after a pre Christmas trip away.

Always like this in the holidays, not much space in our house.

I'm also doing a few deep clean jobs between all the visitors which creates mess in its own way!

Gardeningtime · 28/12/2023 08:29

I Really dislike this passive aggressive nonsense. There is no need for it. Peoples whose home is relatively clean or tidy doesn’t make it a show home. You don’t need to be aggressive about others homes, due to the state of yours.

MyLibrarywasdukedomlargeenough · 28/12/2023 08:34

Big box of recycling in hall of Christmas stuff that needs breaking down and putting in the outside bin , floor could do with a vacuum but not too bad, games all out on the dining table in a pile.

Snowforabit · 28/12/2023 08:38

ours looks lovely but it would, our guests went home yesterday and we have no small children, I remember it well though!

going to start a super big clear out in the new year, Swedish death cleaning it’s called, something like that !
