Mine is still an absolute mess!

I've just gone downstairs and now it's the 28th I feel I need to do something about it.

The dc have toys and clothes scattered everywhere, chocolate wrappers on the floor and glitter everywhere ( don't know where from ). I've just accidentally kicked a die under the sofa which I'll have to get as I know ds will want it later. There are loads of them mini brands lying around just waiting to be stood on.

There seems to be every cup/ glass we own out on the side that needs washing. About 10 loads of laundry to do.

The funny thing is me and dp have been non stop the past few days cooking and cleaning but for some reason it looks like someone has come in, shook our house around and left us the results.

If a visitor turned up this morning, I would have to refuse them entry ( for their own safety).

How is everyone else's houses looking? Please tell me I'm not the only one still falling over stuff left lying around.

This is usually when my house is the tidiest and cleanest! Being off work with extra time available, guests in and out, etc means that it’s all kept on top of.

Unfortunately my back has been in agony since Christmas Eve (I can only just walk again) so it’s all gone down the pan. Back at my desk today as well so that’s that.

WolfFoxHare · 28/12/2023 08:51

Chaos because I have a chest infection so no one is tidying or cleaning.

sanityisamyth · 28/12/2023 08:52

Carnage, but I only moved into it on Friday having had my flat flood 7 weeks before that and staying with friends as an emergency in between!

JustOneMoreBaileys · 28/12/2023 08:55

The house is not bad but I am starting to get The Itch that'll make me glad to pack the decs away in a week and be able to dust and clean everywhere they have been.

The washing machine is currently taking a real hammering: all the clothes and bedding and towels from guests etc.

We'll be washing, drying and ironing for days Grin

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 28/12/2023 08:55

Mine isn't too bad. DD's toys are still unwrapped under the tree so need to move them.
MIL is going home today after being with us since Christmas Eve so when she's gone I'm planning a blitz of the house, I tried to do it yesterday but I find it really hard to clean while someone else is here.
OP I feel your pain with the mini brands, my dd is obsessed with them and I have a few scattered around the living room

Not everyone lives in a show home OP, certainly not us

I Really dislike this passive aggressive nonsense. There is no need for it. Peoples whose home is relatively clean or tidy doesn’t make it a show home. You don’t need to be aggressive about others homes, due to the state of yours.

On the other hand just coming onto a thread saying, my house is immaculate I even cleaned the oven a fridge, is not very supportive of the original poster, at least not without offering some suggestions of where to start.

For some keeping house is easy, for others it's swimming uphill. Like everything not everyone can do it to the same standard.

So for OP.
Put a laundry load on
Whilst the washing machine is dealing with that get fresh washing up water do the glasses leave them to dry on a tea towel they take too much space on drying rack/dishwasher
Any plans to soak do this with glass water
Whilst they are drying clear living room floor to push a hoover around the middle bit
Empty washing machine
Dry glasses completely put away
Do another round of washing up

Clear enough kitchen surface to prep what you need on

And that is the start of breaking the back of things.

I hate housework
But do it
But try to do it in as small amount of time as possible so treat it as a time management exercise

All above will take about an hour

MintJulia · 28/12/2023 09:01

ds is with his df, so the sitting room is partially decorated, there are dust sheets & paint pots.

The fridge is gradually emptying, the kitcen is mostly back to normal and I'm about to start changing bed linen.

This is how I always use the in-between week. 🙂

lucysmam · 28/12/2023 09:02

Not too bad here! One kitchen side out of action holding treats - the others are relatively clear. Just a few pots to wash there, my tea bag to chuck, & hot water bottle to empty.

Washing basket seems to be taking itself next door to be filled 🙄

Living room's reasonable - all my books are neatly on my table until I can get to the bookshelf, or on the arm of my chair (crochet) until I can get to my craft things. Few presents not taken upstairs yet, and one not delivered yet.

There will be more mess in there shortly as it's dd2's birthday & the tree has become "birthday tree" with party poppers waiting for dd2 & there are presents for her to open.

DO NOT ASK ABOUT MY BEDROOM 🤣

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 28/12/2023 09:09

All clear and tidy. I learnt early on that a good strategy is having ikea bags ready on Christmas Day to sort everyone’s presents as they are opened then they can go straight up to bedrooms. And then yesterday I found homes for everything so it’s all properly away now (always do a sort out in dc’s rooms pre-Christmas so spaces are ready and waiting). DH & I both really hate having clutter around so we work pretty effectively together to keep things tidy.

We’ve got friends staying again now though so it will be surface level messy for the next couple of days.

justmyluck1234 · 28/12/2023 09:11

Mines not looking good, our apartment is to small for all us as it is but the extra stuff from Christmas has definitely taking its toll. Want to try getting on top of it today.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 28/12/2023 09:12

Mine looks like a bomb has hit it.
We have a 3yr old and a 1yr old and they created more chaos than expected.

On Christmas Day DP's mum decided to come for the meal despite telling us previously that she wasn't. Then turned up much earlier than agreed. That put us in a fluster and nothing got tidied as we shoved everything in the living room and shut the door, containing his mum to the kitchen and dining room.

Boxing Day we were out all day and yesterday we were out shopping most of the day.
We managed to get the majority of the packaging and wrapping paper to the tip before it closed. The recycling bin is full and the sodding bin men didn't take it this morning - just drove straight past DP who had dragged it out ready for them. Now we have nowhere to

Posted too soon 🙄

... have nowhere to put the rubbish for 2wks until they come back.

We're back at work tomorrow and DP is working all weekend. I've done my back in and we all have colds.

So today we will try to get back on track and sort out all the toys.

Can't wait to get all the Christmas stuff back up in the loft next week and have a good dust/clean.

WonderingWanda · 28/12/2023 09:18

Presents everywhere and too much food. All needs a good clean again after guests over Christmas and the washing machine definitely needs to go back on. Oh and the recycling boxes and the big bin are overflowing already.

Fizbosshoes · 28/12/2023 09:23

On Christmas day I was feeling smug because the kitchen looked pretty tidy as we did not host any guests or do any cooking.
DH has now started a diy project which likely means chaos in the kitchen and several other rooms for the foreseeable future!🤣

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 28/12/2023 09:23

Stuff everywhere. Floors clear but any surface has detritus on it.
my mental state as a result = murderous.

it’s my job for today.

Morewineplease10 · 28/12/2023 09:27

Mine isn't too bad.
Need to do some laundry and clean the bathroom but otherwise cleanish and tidyish which will do for now!

My spring clean happens in spring!

maddiemookins16mum · 28/12/2023 09:27

Ours is okayish, an hour would have it pristine but omg the washing that needs done! No way can I get any outside, I must have 4 loads that need done 🥹

Ariela · 28/12/2023 09:38

Super tidy - because the rest of the year it just heaps up and we blitz it for Christmas.

daffodilandtulip · 28/12/2023 09:39

I hung their new clothes up last night so they didn't get trashed on the floor and had a Hoover around for the first time. I've just put a load of washing on. I've kept up with the dishwasher so the kitchen is tidy, apart from the billion nice snacks but they're still laid out nicely so that's ok. Everything else still scattered in the living room but that's Christmas!

lucysmam · 28/12/2023 09:40

@maddiemookins16mum I have three loads to be done here! It's all going on the big airer in my room, door closed & dehumidifier on for the day. Ours seems to be mostly pj's!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 28/12/2023 09:41

Ours is fine but our DS is 14 so there’s no massive piles of toys. He took his presents up last night and I expect his rooms are a tip but that’s nothing new 🙈. There’s a few of the dog’s teddies strewn around but again that’s nothing new, I wonder if I could teach him to tidy them away?

We’re having a party tomorrow and DH will want the house spotless (I’m much more laid back about it) so we’ll all spend tomorrow morning having a really good clean.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2023 09:42

Tree is still up but I've taken the cards down. Kitchen is clear. A couple of loads of washing to do.

Ambi · 28/12/2023 09:45

Not too messy but it is desperately in need of a deep clean that I'll do on NYE when the decs come down. The laundry basket is overflowing.

Allthecatsandcosyblankets · 28/12/2023 09:47

The tree is down and living room/dining room/kitchen are all organised and clean. The kids bedrooms are not. There are boxes/beauty products/gadgets/toys everywhere. The wash baskets are almost at the ceiling but I'm tackling that today. The bins have been emptied thankfully but have about 20 boxes to bring to the dump. But I am in no rush and still enjoying movies and endless food despite having the tree and decorations down
