Does anyone else not class Christmas as over till after new year?

My social media is full of
"Christmas over for another year "
"Decorations down for another year "
Is it just me who still celebrates Christmas till January?
I don't understand people taking decorations down when it's still festive.

Those that say this in between period is still Christmas and for walks, staying in pjs and watching films, obviously don’t have to work. For many, they get Boxing Day off and then it’s straight back to work. After a four day week again this week, you don’t feel much like Christmas anymore. There’s no time for relaxing or doing those post-Christmas activities with family.

I for one was back at work at 6.30am on 27th, so even Boxing Day was an early night to prepare for my alarm call. Christmas now feels like a distant dream and I’m thankful that my decorations are away and I’m not having to do that around work. Don’t get me wrong, if someone gave me two weeks off, the decs would still be up (as they probably would for a lot of people) but not everyone is that lucky!

Do you only put the Christmas decorations up when you finish work for Christmas if Christmas is related to being off work?

FreshWinterMorning · 29/12/2023 00:40

1st Jan is not so bad @IdaPolly but some people are like urgh I am soooo over it by 9pm on Boxing day!

Yeah this! Confused Many people only have say, the 24th to the 26th (or the 27th) off. (2-4 days.) But they don't go to all the effort of putting the tree up and multiple decorations and lights, just for 2-3 days surely? Confused

We have our decorations and tree up till 12 th night. I go back to work on the 3rd but consider the season to end on the 6th.

StoneTheCrone · 29/12/2023 00:47

No, I believe in the 12days of Christmas, so I still have my decorations up and I'm still listening to Christmas carols and watching Christmas films, etc..

I think it's really sad when everyone removes all signs of Christmas by the 26th.

It's a lovely time of year/season so I think we should enjoy it for as long as possible but I think I might be in a minority because i'm older. I notice my 20 something and 30 something colleagues see Christmas as a 1st - 25th December celebration.

MerryChristmas23 · 29/12/2023 00:48

I aim to get all the decorations down by the 27th December, can't stand seeing decorations in January

I used to love Time and Tune at Infants School, if that's what your name relates to.

Namechanged4obviousreasons · 29/12/2023 01:05

@IdaPolly No, I put the decs up in December, whilst working, sorting kids, arranging Xmas activities and shopping for presents. Pre-Christmas is stressful, so once it’s done, I get the decorations down so I’m not faced with having to do that at a weekend after another long week at work, whilst lots of smug folk sit at home in their pjs with their decs up.

Not everyone finds Christmas relaxing and all that enjoyable. I like the lights and tree but I do most of it for my children and after Boxing Day, I prefer to have it down so I can spend any remaining time with them at the weekend or after work. It’s what I can manage and works for us.

I’m not sure why anyone should really be bothered by what others do or don’t do though. We all have a different Christmas. Some people barely manage to get through each day.

AnSionnachGlic · 29/12/2023 01:22

I would like to say Christmas isn't over until the 6th, but in reality it's over on 2nd January when dh goes back to work. Until then it's full on eating cheese/ chocs, drinking wine, watching movies in day time and not knowing what day of the week it is!!

PuffyShirt · 27/12/2023 11:33

We very much treat the whole week between as Christmas. Back to normal on 2nd.

Same here. It's a downer to see people removing trees, etc., already.

Yep, it's still the Christmas season for me, and will be till 12th night.

Absolutely this!

coxesorangepippin · 29/12/2023 01:39

Jan 2 it's over

HoHoHoliday · 29/12/2023 01:48

I have stages of decorations and celebrations.
Winter solstice/yule is celebrated on the appropriate day with candles and a Yule log.
Anything Santa/gift themed is put out the weekend before Christmas and taken down in the few days after Christmas Day.
Anything religious/christian/nativity themed also put out the weekend before Christmas and stays out until around a week after epiphany. I am eating Christmas food and doing Christmas traditions for this entire time too!
Anything seasonal/wintery is out from late November going into February. I have a real Christmas tree, Holly wreaths, real garlands. I refuse to get rid of real plants until they are dead. Likewise, I will absolutely not take down fairy lights during the darkest time of the year!

FriedasCarLoad · 27/12/2023 11:45

Full-on Christmas until Epiphany, when most of the decorations come down.

The nativity sets and a few sets of indoor lights will remain up until Candlemas.

I would also have said it ends on the epiphany, 5th January. Candlemas is not a well known tradition and not celebrated much in the UK but it sounds nice.

I remember vividly going back to school after Christmas probably around 3rd/4th January and coming home to the tree still being up until 12th night. I just felt so depressed at seeing it all still there. I always take mine down on NYD at the latest now for that reason. Hyacinths and a spring clean to cheer me up for the months of January and February which I hate. I really can't stand the winter anyway.

This absolutely, think of it as The Holidays/The Festive Season not just 2 days

This is my reason for reluctantly cutting it short. My kids are young enough that it would be really confusing for them to have to go back to school when it's still Christmas. I'd have found it really depressing too.

JaninaDuszejko · 29/12/2023 07:46

Based on my steeet most people don't put decorations up before mid December and then keep them up until 12th night.

This is the best part, I'm not working, kids have no activities this week, the house is full of food and guests, there's not the 101 concerts to attend. Just chilling with family and a couple of parties to host. Not back to work till 8th Jan and the tree will only come down the morning it's collected for recycling.

I assume all the influencers are fed up of Christas because thy've been doing campaigns since October and are ready for the nex thing. In the real world we are still enjoying our holidays.

I love this thread. Ill drag it out for as long as possible. I love Christmas and winter. I try to plan to have friends and family round 27, 28, 29 for big meals, games... i was playing my Christmas music loud and proud yesterday while cleaning. Dec's will stay up till 12th night. I feel sad when Christmas has gone. It's such a happy season, my daughter 16 loves it as much as me thankfully. We never celebrated Christmas when i was a child, so it's extra special for me. i actually listen to Christmas carols throughout the entire year to hang on to it, and remind me it wont be long till it returns. I start my planning in September

Catsknowbest · 29/12/2023 10:58

Me! Not over until 12th night

FestiveFruitloop · 29/12/2023 11:07

I've just heard this period referred to as 'tweenmas' on This Morning (how twee! - no pun intended) - is that a common term nowadays??

Definitely still Christmas for me, all the way through until Twelfth Night even though I'm working some of that time. Also considering doing Candlemas this year as I just love the decorations so much and hate to part with them.

I've never heard 'Tweenmas', but have often heard this period referred to as 'Twixmas' in recent years.

Poppins17 · 29/12/2023 20:28

We used to take them down in between Christmas and new year, but last year we were poorly and weren’t well enough in that period to do it.

Despite feeling great this year, we still have our decorations up. Think we’re just too lazy this year to take them down!

We’re back at work on 2nd, so will wait until Saturday 6th to take them down.
