My social media is full of
"Christmas over for another year "
"Decorations down for another year "
Is it just me who still celebrates Christmas till January?
I don't understand people taking decorations down when it's still festive.

I'm guessing them people don't like Christmas or something. There are 12 days of Christmas.

shearwater2 · 27/12/2023 13:17

I definitely see it as lasting for the 12 days of Christmas. It would be nice to leave lights up until Candlemas as they do in parts of France. This year we'll probably take decorations down on NYD though as we are back to work and school on 2nd Jan and may be then too busy to take them down by 6th.

Blinkityblonk · 27/12/2023 13:19

I'm afraid it's ended today for me, taking the decorations down. It all looks a bit sad to me after Christmas Day- I mean in my house, I don't mind what anyone else does. I also don't want to eat excessive 'Christmas-style' for a week or two and then self-flagellate all of Jan, rather just have two days of fun and then get on with work and normal life! I'm not big into Christmas though and I'm slightly relieved when it's over, we all just seem more relaxed and there's less stress to enjoy ourselves, so we have more fun!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/12/2023 13:22

Xmas is over on 27th for me

GrumpyPanda · 27/12/2023 13:26

Christmas eve to Epiphany for us. Jan 6 happens to be a public holiday here so that helps. The municipal Christmas tree collection is shortly thereafter so it's not an isolated opinion. In Catholic areas it's also the period when Carol singers go around and chalk blessings for the new year on your doorway if you've arranged beforehand.

Tree doesn't go up until Christmas eve or the day before mind you so we haven't had a chance to get fed up with it! Advent is a separate period and we have advent wreaths for that, with one candle added for each Sunday.

We’re atheists but we love the Christmas celebrations - but for our family the Christmas season is 6-25 December. We don’t have Boxing Day where we live so it’s back to work on 26 December. Decorations are always down before the end of the year - separates the end of one year and start of the next.

AuntieStella · 27/12/2023 13:29

It’s Christmas until Twelfth Night, then everything gets cleared away at Epiphany (the day following) with those Kings marking the end of the season

It’s a dreary time of year - so I really don’t like to cut Christmas short

gwenneh · 27/12/2023 13:35

Some of my older family members were raised in the Eastern Orthodox church so we keep Christmas through January 7th. Our main celebrations are the 24-26 of December, and then we do a smaller one on the 7th Jan.

Interesting. Different strokes and all that. I tend to be a bit disorganised so the tree goes up late - this year was good - 19th December 😄so automatically we take it down late as well. We've always taken it down about the 5th/6th. I always intend to put it up near the start of December but it never works out like that.

Still Christmas here!

Lots of lovely food and drink still to have.

Christmas for us starts on Christmas Eve and ends on 12th night.

stargirl1701 · 27/12/2023 13:41

Our tree only went up on Christmas Eve and it will be Christmas here until Twelfth Night. I would extend it to Candlemas if DH would agree!

DH and I are both off until the schools go back on the 8th January.

This is Christmas. Time for friends and family, time for reading, playing board games, making jigsaw puzzles, long walks with the dog, great food, watching films, naps on the sofa, listening to music, baking...the best time of the year.

It's so calm and relaxed.

slavetothekittens · 27/12/2023 13:42

Still Christmas here. Still got lots of nice things to eat and drink, just got a couple of Christmas cards in the post today and the decorations are up until Jan 6th.

minipin · 27/12/2023 13:43

Yes!!! I've found my people! Really bristle when I'm asked on 27th "did you have a good Christmas?"
I know it's petty.

piscofrisco · 27/12/2023 13:54

It finishes on Jan 2nd for me. That siss this year I would probably start taking things down on this coming Saturday and just ledge a few bits up for New Year's Eve, just as I put alot of decs up this year and it will take me a while. I can't do that really as we have two different sets of family staying from today until the 30th and then we are going away for New Year's Eve, back on the 1st. Back to work 2nd and I will have a busy old time of it in the evenings taking everything down before the 6th!

tadpolelove · 27/12/2023 13:56

Mine are up until Jan 2nd here new years is still Xmas to us. I saw people taking theres down Xmas night 😱 that insane to me. But some was putting them up oct/nov which is also insane. When you've got kids why would you want to take them down Xmas night that's just sad for the kids.

louisejaynn · 27/12/2023 14:05

Oh I'm so pleased there's more of us
Today for us has consisted of board games, cheeseboard ,Malibu and lemonade while watching Harry Potter and Christmas chronicles soon
Still in my pjs and tree is twinkling away

Still Christmas here. We have a meal out with some family tonight, big family gathering on 29th and meeting different family members out for lunch on 30th. Then going to the panto NYE.

Decorations definitely still up. I don’t usually take them down before the 6th Jan however I’m no longer teaching so back to work on 2nd rather than 8th like the schools round here. My relative who is staying is leaving on 1st and I’m back at work on 2nd so it may be that we take them down on the afternoon/ evening of 1st - I will see how I feel on the day. I might at least get the tree down then start to take the other bits away slowly - maybe leave a few lights up through Jan just because they’re pretty.

I was actually really looking forward to this in between bit this year and really enjoying it so far. The build up was quite hectic and we all had various cough/ colds and other ailments on top of work, events booked and preparations. The day itself was lovely but quite a lot of work hosting, and so I was really looking forward to the time off work/ off nursery for DD, a few low key social things seeing family but mainly
just chilling at home, eating the masses
of food we’d laid in and no pressure at all.

tigger1001 · 27/12/2023 14:14

I enjoy the time between Christmas and new year. But I don't need the decorations up to enjoy it.

I don't have a fixed date the decorations come down. Sometimes it's been Boxing Day, other times it's after new year. It just depends. But they are always down before I go back to work and a good house clean too. Am back on the 3rd this year so might be 31st or the 1st this year

Notmetoo · 27/12/2023 14:15

I agree. Christmas isn't over until 12th night. Definitely not until after the new year. This is the Christmas season. If people didn't put their decorations up in November they wouldn't be in such a rush to take them down on Boxing day

MrsMoggy · 27/12/2023 14:15

I’ve taken everything down today. My husband is back at work tonight and I’m back in work tomorrow so not particularly in the festive spirit anymore. Still have a mountain of party food to make our way through though!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 27/12/2023 14:18

I love Christmas. Decorations went up on 2nd December and will come down just after NYD.

I do feel a bit sad when xmas day is over, as I love it so much, so keeping the decorations and sparkle going till after NY is my way of keeping that magic.

Plus, I'm not working again till 8th Jan which is rare so enjoying the break. DH is working, so it's just me and the kids.

The only person I know who takes decorations down early, is someone who has 2 kids birthday on 26th Dec (not twins, unbelievably) so they come down Xmas night and decorate for birthdays.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 27/12/2023 14:19

Each to their own, but I'm with you. Still the holidays till 12th night 😊😊

Freddyschase554 · 27/12/2023 14:21

Agree op! Decs go up 19th. Come down 12th night.

Have to work tomorrow and Friday but apart from that still enjoying the Christmas season!

ElevenSeven · 27/12/2023 14:23

I would have said yes when I was younger, but now Christmas seems to start earlier; trees seem to go up earlier, celebrations start earlier. So we’re taking the tree down tomorrow. I can’t wait to clean where all the decorations have been.

Heart Xmas is gone too!

Mammyloveswine · 27/12/2023 14:26

I only broke up on Friday! It absolutely is still Christmas!
