My social media is full of
"Christmas over for another year "
"Decorations down for another year "
Is it just me who still celebrates Christmas till January?
I don't understand people taking decorations down when it's still festive.

Yes we take all decs down on the 27th. Christmas is finished after Boxing Day. Our dd birthday is very soon after Christmas so we don’t want decs up when it’s her day.

Sourisblanche · 27/12/2023 18:33

It’s Christmas for us until epiphany. I did have a really good tidy up today though.

Christmas cards went and advent stuff away but trees and main decorations stay up until someone has found the baby Jesus in the Galette des Rois!

Lisbeth50 · 27/12/2023 18:36

Our tree only went up on 21st. We will probably keep it up until 6th Jan.

I love the week between Christmas and New Year - walks, food, TV, reading etc. It's lovely to have the decorations up. I find it sad- and a little strange - when I hear of people taking them down on Boxing Day!

MySecret21 · 27/12/2023 18:36

The tree and decorations all come down on the 27th. As far as I’m concerned the Christmas Period ends on Boxing Day.

tinytemper66 · 27/12/2023 18:41

I am going away on NY Day and would normally have taken my decorations down before departure. This year my son is coming home to visit and we will be overlapping so will leave them up until we return on 12th night!

FestiveFruitloop · 27/12/2023 18:43

It doesn't end for me till New Year's Day at the earliest, but I am fortunate in being able to take the week between Christmas and New Year off work - maybe I'd feel differently otherwise, but I just love Christmas and even in my fifties am always a little sad to see it go.

As a kid it didn't finish in our house till Jan 6, but as an adult of course it tends to feel over once you go back to work. Decs won't come down till later in Jan though, usually whenever the tree starts to look too sorry for itself.

Chickpea17 · 27/12/2023 18:46

Christmas finishes on Boxing Day.

LolaSmiles · 27/12/2023 18:46

Most years I keep mine up until new year and then take them down.

For people who decorate early and do lots of run up to Christmas things I understand why they'd be over Christmas by December 27th though.

ChocolateCandle · 27/12/2023 21:42

The run up to Christmas is so busy (lots of preparation and events at school and church), so we really look forward to the time between Christmas Day and 12th Night. It's a time for visitors and visiting, reading, relaxing, playing games and watching films. Definitely keep the main decorations up but cards and a few things might get removed earlier. I understand those who want a "fresh start" at new year but not those who end Christmas on the 27th! We go back to work on the 8th so although we're definitely in holiday mood, I do get a lot of jobs done too!

I'm a Christmas is over after the 26th. Decorations stay up until 30th/31st but I'm itching to take them down ASAP. I'm a minimalist at heart and struggle with the mess and things everywhere. I like to start NY with a sparkly clean house, all fresh.

We've started to go away for a few nights in between Boxing Day and NYE every year for a change of scenery which I prefer to the chrimbo limbo weird, don't know what to do with ourselves time.

What do you mean you don't know what to go with yourselves?!? You enjoy Christmas food and drink and watch Christmas films and your presents and generally relax and enjoy Christmas after the stress and planning! If you really need to do something you can go and see family or friends or have them come to you or go on wintery walks. Or do activities like ice skating or go to Christmassy lit up gardens.

I couldn't be bothered to organise Christmas at all if it were just one day! It's a whole festive period which is what makes the weeks of organising worthwhile!

I love Christmas. And the bit between Christmas and New Year is my favourite. You get to eat day's of "Boxing Day Food" and relax and cosy in. We weren't even at home for Christmas Day but have put up a lovely tree, that's making the front room look lovely and sparkly and cost, and have just made a (second) turkey dinner just so that we can enjoy the leftovers!!

There are 12 days of Christmas and 25th is the first.

If people are sick of it before the 12 days are up they are starting too early!

This. They'll be taken down 12th night here too! The later the better. I love the Christmas decs! Especially the tree!

Polis · 28/12/2023 21:11

Twelfth night for us.

EllaPaella · 28/12/2023 21:17

The 'holiday' period doesn't end for us until after New Year when the kids go back to school. To be fair DH and I both have to work off and on throughout the two week break as I'm sure do the majority of people so I do understand why most working aged people aren't able to just sit around eating chocolate, reading and watching TV for two weeks and perhaps feel Christmas is over after boxing day and normal working weeks resume as normal.

Lovemusic82 · 28/12/2023 21:18

Took my decorations down today, for me it’s over after Boxing Day, celebrating the new year doesn’t involve Christmas trees and tinsel.

My Christmas isn't over til Epiphany! ( Jan 6th) I like to enjoy after Christmas Day, before is still stressful and busy 🙂

Isn't it funny that people are different?

For us, the exciting Xmas period is all leading up to the big day. We have watched all the Xmas films from 1st Dec, had enough of Xmas treats and drinks by Boxing Day. We never have traditional Xmas Dinner so don't have left overs.

I guess our busy Xmas period is 20th to 26th Dec as I finish work on 19th every year so we do all the family visiting and wintry walks then. We don't generally do the paid Xmas activities as they are usually £20 pp so £80 per activity and December is expensive enough.

For us, after Boxing Day we are all on chill out / wind down mode, its usually my first time off work since early Summer (this year was June) and I need the recharge time after a hectic year to switch off and reset. I'll contemplate the year gone, have a declutter, plan the year ahead, start good habits whilst I have the time and headspace to do so. I'm so ready to deal with the merry go round of the impending NY by the 30/31st and clear the house and have a deep clean. Xmas has more than outstayed it's welcome at mine by then. We're not religious so Epiphany and twelfth night are meaningless to us.

I think it's great that we've all got our own traditions and ways of doing things that work for us.

ChristmasCwtch · 28/12/2023 22:41

Bored of my decorations now. I want to take them down and clean for the new year 😂 I’m looking forward to Spring 🤩

SkaneTos · 28/12/2023 23:02

I celebrate Advent during Advent. Special candle holder, etc.

Christmas for me starts the day before Christmas Eve. That's when we put the tree up, and all the decorations.

Christmas lasts until Saint Knut's Day, which is on January 13. (In my home country we call it Tjugondag Knut, "Twentieth Day Knut", twenty days after Christmas. The tree and the decorations stay up until then. Sometimes that day one can have a party, especially for the children - they get to dance around the tree (again) and eat all the goodies that hang in the tree.

stargirl1701 · 28/12/2023 23:44

Spring is not until the 20th March!

Namechanged4obviousreasons · 28/12/2023 23:45

Those that say this in between period is still Christmas and for walks, staying in pjs and watching films, obviously don’t have to work. For many, they get Boxing Day off and then it’s straight back to work. After a four day week again this week, you don’t feel much like Christmas anymore. There’s no time for relaxing or doing those post-Christmas activities with family.

I for one was back at work at 6.30am on 27th, so even Boxing Day was an early night to prepare for my alarm call. Christmas now feels like a distant dream and I’m thankful that my decorations are away and I’m not having to do that around work. Don’t get me wrong, if someone gave me two weeks off, the decs would still be up (as they probably would for a lot of people) but not everyone is that lucky!

Cornishclio · 28/12/2023 23:56

We take the decorations down New Years day so that is when Christmas is over for us.

FreshWinterMorning · 29/12/2023 00:26

Urgh! I do find these people so very tedious, although I do only find them on mumsnet, not in real life. All the people I know (many are on social media,) are still fully in the Christmas groove. It's a season, not a fecking day or a weekend.

I find it so bizarre. Some people take everything down on the 26th or the 27th of December. Christmas is 1st December in our home, until the 6th of January. And everything stays UP! Some people seem quite proud of pulling it all down on the 26th or the 27th. Nobody's impressed 😑.

WhatNoUsername · 29/12/2023 00:26

@Ambi So your comment about "don't know what to do with yourselves" which I was responding to isn't accurate. Sounds like you have plenty to occupy yourselves! I wasn't suggesting people don't do different things. Of course they do. I was commenting on the fact you couldn't seem to occupy the time between Xmas and new year. As you've now described you do occupy that time with your own traditions!

IdaPolly · 29/12/2023 00:35

I'm a 1st - 31st December person.
1st Jan I like to take decs down and the potted Christmas tree and put out pots of winter flowers instead. Indoors I like to put out pink candles and look towards Spring, even though it's not Spring yet.
This week though I'm still eating Christmas food and chocolates.
