My social media is full of
"Christmas over for another year "
"Decorations down for another year "
Is it just me who still celebrates Christmas till January?
I don't understand people taking decorations down when it's still festive.

My decs stay up until 30th dec. I take them down on the 30th and clean the house to welcome the new year in. Plus i find it depressing going to work on the 2nd jan and coming home to the decs still being up until 6th or 12th january like it was when i lived with my parents.
It just helps me accept xmas is over and back to the grind, albeit a new year lol

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/12/2023 12:01

Until 12th night here. But then I don’t start it in November so I’m not fed up of it by Boxing Day.

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/12/2023 12:02

The lights and candles will probably sta up until candlemas in February though. They make the house look warm.

RuthW · 27/12/2023 12:03

Back at work today so all normal

HappyBusman · 27/12/2023 12:04

Till Epiphany/Women’s Christmas.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/12/2023 12:04

There are 12 days of Christmas (it's not just a song!) Christmas isn't over until Epiphany on 6th Jan.

louisejaynn · 27/12/2023 12:04

Instagram is full of all the bloggers
"So bored of them, new start for new year "

Christmas ends on NYD for us but that's because we're not back to work until the 4th.

When I worked in retail it pretty much ended on Boxing Day.

grayhairdontcare · 27/12/2023 12:10

Christmas decorations have always gone up first of December. Always down Boxing Day evening.
The run up to Christmas was always packed with pantos, Santa trips and things . So that was the Christmas stuff.
After Boxing Day we always play, build, use all the toys and stuff they got and arrange the storage for them.

yepmeagain · 27/12/2023 12:35

Everyone back at work now so everything comes down and is put away. All over until 20 December next year.

It's no longer 'festive' when you're back at work!

PersephonePomegranate23 · 27/12/2023 12:41

It's still Christmas here! Decs will come down 6th or 7th Jan, ready for school and work to begin again for a full week on 8th.

I absolutely love Christmas. I love the build up, butbut the weeks leading up are so busy it's lovely to have the time to sit, relax and enjoy this quieter time.

Jan and Feb are bleak months for me.

Scampuss · 27/12/2023 12:45

I hadn't really clocked until this year Xmas Blush that most people seem to fall into 2 camps over this, those who start early and see Christmas Day as the end, and those who start late and see Christmas Day as the beginning (and some, of course, who do it all). I'm firmly in Christmas Day being the start.

SugarCookieMonster · 27/12/2023 12:45

In previous years I’ve got fed up of the decorations between Christmas and new year (especially when we had a real tree that was drooping and looking depressed!).

However, this year I want to enjoy Christmas up until New Year’s Day. All that build up to immediately take it down after makes me feel sad this year.

DS is 5 and still all excited about his presents, the food and playing. DH has a shift today but then off again until new year and I’m off until the 4th so will probably clear everything away before I go back to work.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/12/2023 12:51

Here it’s not over until 6th Jan, when the decs come down, but admittedly I don’t really feel festive once NYE is over. I love the week between Christmas and NY though.

drspouse · 27/12/2023 12:52

Tree and decorations up till the 6th, mini nativity up till Feb 2nd.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 27/12/2023 12:52

There are 12 days of Christmas and 25th is the first.

If people are sick of it before the 12 days are up they are starting too early!

TheChosenTwo · 27/12/2023 12:53

Properly over here, only lasts one day for us, the 25th, every other day is just normal days. Decs came down yesterday as we’ve come away on holiday today, big family get together we do every year. So much fun, we look forward to it way more than Christmas!
come back in the new year and normal life resumes again.

dutysuite · 27/12/2023 12:58

I try to stay off social media over Christmas, I don’t care what other people choose to do, I’m not one to follow everyone else, I do me! Therefore, my tree stays up until New Year’s day, I like it up for my birthday and NYE.

Nanalisa60 · 27/12/2023 13:01

Yep probably the same people putting them up in early November, mine will be up until at least 4th January.

Tinseltomato · 27/12/2023 13:03

Yeah I think it is still Christmas. Definitely until at leatsnew years day.

LegoHeads · 27/12/2023 13:05

Still Christmas here. My preference would be not to start Christmas at all until 24th- keep Advent for fasting* and reflection, then celebrate Christmas between Christmas Day and Epiphany. But that obv doesn’t fit well with how people do it these days.

  • not a full fast, maybe just no booze or sugar.
DrCoconut · 27/12/2023 13:06

We're only just getting started! It's day 3 of 12 here. All the music channels, radio etc have completely dispensed with Christmas now, it's depressing. Surely some people who have extended family, separated families etc are still catching up with everyone. Or they just want to listen to slade and stuff their faces with mince pies for another few days.

EasyLifer · 27/12/2023 13:06

We put the decorations up the first Saturday in Dec then take them down on New Years Day. Until then it's still Christmas, we still have family get togethers this week and will enjoy some lazy days eating the leftovers and catching up on Christmas TV.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 27/12/2023 13:07

For me, Christmas is when we're all off school/work/nursery. DH and I are off this week and back in the 2nd so New Year's Day is the last day of Christmas for us this year really.

Tinseltomato · 27/12/2023 13:07

I would also say when I worked in retail I had the same approach. Possibly more important to keep it going and I start celebrating early on 1st Dec.

For me it's about colour, sparkle, joy and fun. Why would I not want as much of that as possible? I'm sure people have reasons and it makes not drop of difference to me but it does feel kinda grim that people are so keen to cut it short.
