What's in your treat corner and when does it officially open?

A throwback from my childhood Christmases, always a corner of the living room with treats but normally under strict instructions not to be touched until Christmas Eve or else we'd end up eating them all. So we've got those pretzel cracker things that come in little plastic compartments, Lebkuchen, Quality Street, liquorice all sorts, jelly babies, mint and orange matchmakers, toffifee, Pringles and After Eight mints. If it were 1992 and my Mum was still alive, we'd also have rum balls, orange and lemon slices and that toffee you could only break with a hammer...

oh I used to love those orange and lemon slices! Can you still buy those I wonder hmm…. I have a corner of my bedroom with all the Christmas snacks and drinks I’ll bring it downstairs on Xmas eve although we have already eaten an entire tub of quality stree my AND Roses 😬

User1789 · 20/12/2023 18:49

Great thread. We have Lindor balls, Danish butter biscuits, medjool dates I am going to stuff with marzipan, Benedicts mints, Terry's chocolate orange, Twiglets, cheese straws, pistachios and nuts I am going to roast. And A LOT of naice beers.

'Treat bar' opens up tomorrow after school as it is the last day of term for my little boy, and those were the rules when I was growing up with teacher parents.

Pushkinini · 20/12/2023 19:02

Usually the treats are not allowed to be opened until the last day of work before Xmas but my adult DC are home and have already gone through a tube or two of Pringles, a bag of pretzels and a tub of Celebrations. At this rate my stash won't last until next week. I replenished a bit on the way home from work tonight. We have two of the DC's friends joining us for NY so I will have to restock before then too.

Currently nothing.. 😆

Iamacatslave · 20/12/2023 19:08

I have already started eating the pistachios and pepero.

The chocolate nuts and stuff aren't until xmas eve after the kids bed time lol.

CharlottePimpernel · 20/12/2023 19:38

I'm already into the Cadbury snowballs, honey roast cashews, pretzels and marzipan.

Same here. The eldest two returned from Uni today and all three are chomping their way through the goodies!

fourelementary · 20/12/2023 19:41

Where did you get the pretzel compartment thingy please @CatalogueOnVinylFlooring

I have Pringles, nuts, cans of soft drink and bottles of schloer. A tub each of roses, QS, Heroes and Celebrations. Cheeseboard, mini oatcakes, Christmas cake, stollen mini bits… open from the weekend.

Splendidsunbird · 20/12/2023 19:41

Some of my goodies are in the fridge - some amazing locally produced cheeses. Can't wait to get stuck into those. Plus some nice beers.
In the cupboard are some goodies from Lidl - mini stollen, lebkuchen, Moser Roth chocolate, roasted mixed nuts and roasted pistachios, some marzipan sweets that DP likes, some crisp thingies. Do like a Lidl raid for Christmas goodies.

honeyfox · 20/12/2023 19:44

I don't have a treat corner but last night we finished a small box of Leonidas chocolates I got for my birthday. I am thinking of getting a box of Chocolate Mikados, they are lush.

Mumaway · 20/12/2023 19:44

Cheese footballs, twiglets, some Xmas pudding shaped rocky roads, Liz Shaw crispy mints (milk and dark!). I had actually forgotten about them hidden in the Christmas cupboard, so the cheese footballs are about to meet their end! Thanks for the inspiration

SugarCookieMonster · 20/12/2023 19:48

I broke into the Christmas tree pretzels with a glass of wine last week when DS was in bed and DH was at his work do - felt like I deserved a bit of fun too! 😂

We’ve got the fill your own tin quality street, chocolate orange, sweet and salty Christmas tree pretzels and Guylian seashells. DH has his roasted peanuts, cheese biscuits and I’ve got him marzipan fruits, jelly fruits and some white chocolate for his stocking (only he eats any of that).

Doing the big shop on Friday so I’ll be adding some After eights, Pringles and pistachios.

TheChosenTwo · 20/12/2023 19:52

I don’t really build up a collection but tend to stick extra stuff in with the shopping last week and this week, it just gets opened as and when people want it. I don’t want loads of crap food hanging about for weeks and Christmas Day we are stuffed, Boxing Day we will eat leftovers and then we go away after Boxing Day and not back until the new year.

Loupenny25 · 20/12/2023 20:39

We have a big snack stash going on and we're (Me, DH 4yo and 1yo) just eating as we go, we finished our 3rd chocolate tub of the year today!

Normally I would delay the treats to closer to Christmas however 4yo has been poorly for about a year so we spent all of December 2022 in hospital, home for actual Christmas and then back in for most of January 2023. Needless to say Christmas last year was shockingly shit (illness was totally unexpected).

Our motto this Christmas is "don't delay joy", nothing (bar the turkey) is being saved for later, no film or activity or special plate etc. If we fancy something or doing something we've just done it this Christmas as normally I'm always "saving" treats, activities etc to closer to Christmas. We're squeezing every last drop out of it and we're honestly having the most magical run up to Christmas. Especially as if tomorrow (touch wood) our "home" Christmas stops and "hospital" Christmas begins we know that we've had a great time at home already.

I'll get off my soapbox now 😆...

... but eat the Terry's chocolate orange tonight everyone 🤣

OhMehGoddess · 20/12/2023 20:57

I buy all the nice chocolate we want at Christmas. Eating it starts on Christmas morning with coffee, while presents are being opened.

I think this is a great attitude. I really hope your little boy gets better soon.

GreenLight23 · 20/12/2023 21:07

I’ve got a secret stash in a bedroom cupboard. I did open the all butter fudge this evening and we have finished a tub of Heroes and all chocolate biscuits. The Baileys is open too. There are no more sweet treats yet as if I buy too much in one go I will eat it all.

Jf20 · 20/12/2023 21:10

Oh I can’t imagine laying food out on display and telling people they couldn’t eat it till Xmas eve. That’s really miserable.

i have all the usual stuff in, three different types of boxes of chocolates, different types of nuts, mince pies, lots of millionaires shortbread etc, but we just help ourselves as we please, in fact I encourage it, and I just replace when the shopping is delivered.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/12/2023 21:10

We've got Roses and the tubs of twiglets/cheddars etc. There's always a bottle of Baileys on the go at this time of year, and I've finally discovered that it's lovely in a hot chocolate.

Most of my favourite goodies are ones I haven't yet baked and they will be spread out over the holiday. Streusel topped Mince pies, toffee and chocolate loaf cake, Baileys cheesecake and Yule log will all by home baked and then enjoyed over the 2 weeks.

Catsknowbest · 20/12/2023 21:15

Satsumas, toffee, matchmakers, toffifee, nuts, cherry liqueurs, butter biscuits, chocolate biscuits, lebkuchen, wine gums, Bailey's, beers and various drinks- and I announced today that nibbling could commence 😅

DH and my adult daughter did our food shop yesterday, I was too poorly to join them. They've bought lots of treat stuff, but most of it won't taste right to me as I had Weightloss surgery earlier this year and I don't have the same tastes anymore. However, fruit jellies and chocolate Brazils have been added to the last bits shopping list, so thank you for the reminders!! 😁
