Ds3 asked for toy that doesn't exist

My DS3 loves the show Giant Jack on Netflix and has asked Santa for a Giant Jack toy for Christmas. I have searched everywhere and bar a 6in Teddy that costs £79.99 plus postage from America (that won't get here on time now) they don't exist. I'd hoped when he asked at the beginning of December he'd forget about it but everyday he says he can't wait for his Giant Jack toy. I don't understand why they don't make merchandise for this and have tried to put it to the back of my mind but I feel so sad for him that he's not going to get what he wants for Christmas and this is the first time he's really understood Christmas and Santa etc - November birthday so had just turned 2 last year. I've managed to get a small book from Amazon but if anyone has any good ideas of how I could make or come across a Giant Jack toy (called trash truck in America) I would be so appreciative, otherwise please tell me I haven't ruined Christmas for him already at only 3 Sad

Could you have an image of Giant Jack printed on a cushion or blanket, something special he could take to bed with him?

Thats a good idea!

Don’t panic @sunshowers01
I had similar last year- DD (3 then) wanted a tow truck like a broken one circa early 90’s that she plays with at a local cafe with a play area. She is obsessed with Gecko’s Garage on Netflix/You tube and there’s a tow truck in that.

I searched the planet for the same sodding tow truck as the cafe or one from
Gecko’s garage, stressed to bits that it would ruin Christmas. In the end we got her an entirely different (but with more features) tow truck. She absolutely loved it and never mentioned that it wasn’t the same.

The one you have ordered will be fine, his imagination will do the rest honestly!

Do you mean trash truck with the green truck thingy ? If so, there are some on etsy

SnacksToTheMax · 15/12/2023 13:29

My daughter does this every year. The best one was when (age 5) she asked for a cuddly toy version of a random character from one of the random reading band books at school… a shy, furry, purple monster with a bow in her hair. I was all set to try and make it (got as far as sourcing purple teddy bear fabric) but then I found a hand puppet on Amazon that was just about close enough if you squinted. It didn’t matter that it wasn’t identical - it was enough that she had her own purple monster friend. I’m sure he’d be happy with a cool-looking rubbish truck even if it’s not “official”!

(ps: this year she wants a ZEBRA in a NETBALL UNIFORM. I think she’s testing Santa…)

I love this thread. So wholesome, everyone coming together and trying to help a mum make her little boy's Christmas magical 😭

CourtenayDevon · 15/12/2023 13:51

If you can get some a4 adhesive sheets you could print several images to be cut & stuck.

Tarkan · 15/12/2023 13:51

I'm glad you found something that works OP, I hope your DS loves it come Christmas. I think the toy and book together sounds great.

My DC are both teens now but the youngest did the same thing to me at around the same age. It was Woolly the spider from Woolly and Tig. I spent more than I normally would on a handmade one from Etsy (sewn rather than crocheted like many of the ones at the time) but we actually still have it in the house. Of course they released branded toys from the show just a few months later but our Woolly had had lots of hugs and been played with loads by then and it was worth it to see the excitement when the presents were opened. Smile

I think the idea to customise the truck toy you've bought is great! And if your son does question whether it's 'really' Giant Jack then you could say 'Well, the thing is, the shops didn't have any Giant Jack toys so Santa's elves couldn't find one, but they knew you really wanted one and you've been such a good boy that they tried to make you one themselves. This is the only one that exists in the whole world.'

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 15/12/2023 14:12

The truck could be Giant Jack's British cousin, to get over it not being exactly the same!

Oh man I had this with octonauts when ds was almost 3.

Could Giant Jack be on his way from America on Xmas day? Maybe you could track him on Google maps, print some pics of him on his journey? Have you checked etsy for something handmade, or maybe you could commission a plush toy from a UK maker?

Typical netflix - you can't buy the octonauts movies in any format anywhere, stuck with a subscription just to watch the musical...

Or could you go the other way and sink him into something new like blaze? Some other vehicle franchise with accessible toys?

sorry, off topic, but which Octonauts movie - or is your child older now? Aren't they all on iPlayer (if you are in the UK...) https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b00xhyjf/octonauts

Oh Lord yes, the Octonauts. I ended up buying hand crocheted Oconauts from an enterprising woman on Etsy (or Folksy, can’t remember which). So it is worth checking those as someone might have hand made them, as people did with the Wombles when they first came out.. !

Onemoretimeok · 15/12/2023 18:27

Can you get a giant Jack image printed in to a t shirt for him? Or maybe one small enough for a Teddy?

wyse · 15/12/2023 18:54

I love this. Hope Santa delivers 🤞
My son at the age of 4 was really in to the Musical Oliver!
All he wanted for Christmas was a Lego Workhouse. That was a fun challenge!

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 15/12/2023 18:57

Just because its on his list to danta doesn't mean he gets it. The list to santa is a list of ideas that santa will choose from, its not a list of demands 🤦🏼‍♀️

Piss off back to your rubbish tip, Grinch!

Really!!!!

Get someone on Etsy selling vinyl stickers make you transferable vinyl stickers as a custom order, it's quite simple and quick for anyone who has a cricut. You could also try cricut makers groups on Facebook and post asking if anyone local to you could print you some. They'll send them with transfer tape and you can then transfer them right onto the toy.

Igglepiggleandhisboat · 15/12/2023 20:56

I had a search. What about this:

Or something similar although not quite the same:

I don't get your point about the child being three? Surely 3 is prime age for making Christmas as magical as possible. Could you really not be bothered to print off a few stickers and stick them on a toy rubbish truck, for your three year old, so that they could get their dream present? It's as my children have got older that I have explained to them that they can't have certain things as they are too expensive.

Thanks so much everyone - I've bought the linked green toys recycling truck from Amazon

Green Toys Recycling Truck amzn.eu/d/fJst5h0

I think I'm going to try and print off a picture of Giant Jack and maybe cut out his features and stick them onto the front. Do you think a few layers of PVA would do the trick? Ive no idea how to get them onto vinyl stickers otherwise that would have been a great option lol.

I've also got him the trash truck (Giant Jack) book and love the idea of packaging them as a set.

Oh good! Was just coming here to suggest that one! 3 year olds have brilliant imaginations and I think it’s close enough that he’ll accept it as the real thing - maybe eyes?! POSCA pens would work brilliantly for that (black and white available)
