Ds3 asked for toy that doesn't exist

sunshowers01 · 14/12/2023 22:59

My DS3 loves the show Giant Jack on Netflix and has asked Santa for a Giant Jack toy for Christmas. I have searched everywhere and bar a 6in Teddy that costs £79.99 plus postage from America (that won't get here on time now) they don't exist. I'd hoped when he asked at the beginning of December he'd forget about it but everyday he says he can't wait for his Giant Jack toy. I don't understand why they don't make merchandise for this and have tried to put it to the back of my mind but I feel so sad for him that he's not going to get what he wants for Christmas and this is the first time he's really understood Christmas and Santa etc - November birthday so had just turned 2 last year. I've managed to get a small book from Amazon but if anyone has any good ideas of how I could make or come across a Giant Jack toy (called trash truck in America) I would be so appreciative, otherwise please tell me I haven't ruined Christmas for him already at only 3 Sad

He’s 3 years old!!
why are you pacifying him??
Tell him , no he won’t be getting one as A they’re too much money and B you can’t get one!!!

WickerMam · 15/12/2023 07:57

I would get one of the linked normal recycling trucks. That's probably what he wants to play with, and they do have great play value. We had a similar one that lasted years and was the most played with toy in the house. (Top tip: if you loose anything over the next few years - it's probably in the recycling truck).

That plus a book (maybe wrap them together, so they seem like a bundle) would be perfect, IMO.

It's up to you to manage his expectations here, you have known you can't get something (although pps have given some good ideas) so you should have been telling him not to expect this type of toy. Not so bluntly of course but by saying nothing you are setting him up for huge disappointment.

They do a few books on Amazon - Search Trash Truck Netflix.. I bought them for my nephew. Could you bundle them together with a truck toy that looks most like Giant Jack?

Recycling Truck Playset – Premium Wooden Toy Set with Large Truck, 2 Functional Wheelie Bins, Sorting Card Game, Additional Mini Truck & 3 Wooden Block Bins – Fun & Educational Toddler Toy : Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games

Lots of options for 'representative' toys - I think if you were to be really enthusiastic when he opens it "Oh wow, Giant Jack!", he will be convinced and excited, too.

This one that a pp found would work well if you get some sheets of A4 labels, cut them to fit the flat bit on the side and colour them in to match the Giant Jack markings. Add some eyebrows with a sharpie and it will be definitely close enough to make a 3yo happy. My DS was obsessed with Chuggington at that age and he got some homemade train characters one year, they were a bit crap but had the right colours and he loved them. If it’s close enough to the cartoon that he can tell what it’s supposed to be and it’s fun to play with he won’t care if it’s not accurate in every detail. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176085429580?chn=ps&_ul=GB&mkevt=1&mkcid=28

Any green truck with flat sides you can stick a big sticker on would work.

the brand green toys has a green bin truck, you could get someone that does vinyl stickers to do the detailing for you. Im a crafter and their are tons on facebook that will do the job just join a cricut selling group and post a pic of the truck and one of giant jack and ask if someone can do send you the detail stickers the green toys truck is curved like giant jack and pretty similar in colour and all you need is the eyes and eyebrows and maybe the side signage

Piss off back to your rubbish tip, Grinch!

muchalover · 15/12/2023 09:23

I don't think he would be anticipating the actual truck but something similar will be fine. We want our children to manage expectations and also use their imagination. Any toy you get would be HIS toy.

Or you could get one 3d printed by someone on Etsy or something.

Time to get busy making !
Remember my mum sitting up way past midnight on Christmas Eve trying to make a fairy dress for my little sister's Sindy!!

dottiedodah · 15/12/2023 09:40

Hopefully you will be able to trace one.If not perhaps just gently say that children ask Santa for something ,he does his best but if one of his elves are ill or he had too many requests then something else may have to be given instead

ImustLearn2Cook · 15/12/2023 09:46

@sunshowers01 Giant Jack is originally called Trash Truck but it’s name was changed for Uk audiences and there is overdubbing in the show.

Try a search for trash truck merchandise in the Uk.

I did and found books, clothing etc.

Here is a link to a toy from Etsy.

This one is really sturdy and well made. It has gone through 3 children over 10 years in our house and is still in great condition.

I would get this along with the book and then go with another posters suggestion up thread of getting a picture of Giant Jack on a blanket that he could take to bed with him.

Thanks so much everyone - I've bought the linked green toys recycling truck from Amazon

I think I'm going to try and print off a picture of Giant Jack and maybe cut out his features and stick them onto the front. Do you think a few layers of PVA would do the trick? Ive no idea how to get them onto vinyl stickers otherwise that would have been a great option lol.

I've also got him the trash truck (Giant Jack) book and love the idea of packaging them as a set.

Eyeing up the Etsy blanket now too!!

The Etsy toys look great but they are all from America and I don't think he'd understand if they weren't there on Christmas morning - the cheapest one at £27 has 15 postage and £7.50 tax which works out almost £50 for a second hand toy - which I would definately get if I thought it would be here on time but it's a bit steep for something that might arrive after Christmas.

So many great ideas on this thread - you've really helped a v stressed and guilty mum out
