I’ll start,
O Holy Night.

Something about this Carol that makes me all arm and Christmassy inside 😍

OP posts:
Mittens1717 · 11/12/2023 07:17

O Holy Night
O Come all ye faithful
In the Bleak Midwinter

I've always loved those three and could never decide between them

BlackJumpsuit · 11/12/2023 07:30

@imnotthatkindofmum

I was just thinking about that line the other day and had it playing in my head on a loop 😂

I do love Emanuel, but the highly favoured lady is hilarious.

BlackJumpsuit · 11/12/2023 07:31

See Amid the Winter Snow always a favourite for me

SoundTheSirens · 11/12/2023 07:37

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
The Holly and the Ivy
I Saw Three Ships

I like a jolly carol rather than the ones that can be a bit dirge-like.

renthead · 11/12/2023 07:52

For singable carols, I find it almost impossible to choose. Probably Hark the Herald and O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

My favourites to listen to are:
What Sweeter Music by John Rutter
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day

ValuableLimeLesson · 11/12/2023 08:09

@imnotthatkindofmum The Angel Gabriel makes me laugh - the syntax is so tortured. 'For known a blessed mother thou shalt be'. Er, you what?! I still love it, though.

As I get older, I find I get more sentimental, too. I used to loathe Away in a Manger and Once in Royal, but now they make me cry. There's such an innocence to them.

I love all Christmas music, really!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 11/12/2023 09:07

To sing, deck the halls with boughs of holly. Love a good fa la la.

To listen to, carol of the bells. Beautiful harmonies.

I misread the title and thought this was a thread about the best version of A Christmas Carol. It's the Muppets one for the record.

SparklesInTheCloud · 11/12/2023 10:10

Carol of the bells. Especially the Metallica version!!

I love German Christmas carols. My favourite is: "Süßer die Glocken nie klingen".

I don't know if it's classed as a carol but I love Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. And I love the twelve days of Christmas for the sheer challenge of trying to remember the different presents. We usually manage to memorize them by the time the 25th rolls around.

I love the melody of god rest ye merry gentlemen but not the lyrics.

maldivemoment · 11/12/2023 10:17

Soooo many beautiful carols!

For me it has to be O Holy Night & Candlelight Carol (John Rutter)

John Rutter’s Christmas Album is outstanding!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2023 12:28

I love the Calypso Carol, though never heard it until dds were at school. There’s a lovely version on YouTube.

And ditto to Good King Wenceslas, which you don’t hear so much now.

I was long grown up before I realised that ‘the feast of Stephen’ was 26th December!

Sidebeforeself · 11/12/2023 12:39

@FartNRoses Let me know if you like it!

Bubble54 · 11/12/2023 12:42

I love O Holy night and What Child is this ❤️

@CurlewKate haven't thought about Lift up Lightly the Stable Bar in decades!!!!!! Thanks for the reminder 😁

ChimpyChops · 11/12/2023 12:44

Oh Come All Ye Faithful. Everything.

Also, Little Donkey 😆

ChimpyChops · 11/12/2023 12:46

That should have said every time.

Also, the Calypso Carol!

londonmummy1966 · 11/12/2023 12:53

I sing so like the ones I enjoy performing more than the standard Christmas hymns which always feel a bit of a slog. I love Gaudete as spitting out some really fast Latin is fun. There's also a lovely version of A Great and Mighty Wonder with an amazing double descant on the various Trinity Cambridge recordings. However my all time favourite is the Coventry Carol.

The angel Gabriel is always messed up by young choristers who think that "highly flavoured gravy" is hilarious.

cjcghana · 11/12/2023 13:08

Hark The Herald Angels Sing is my favourite

Brody77 · 11/12/2023 13:17

I love god rest ye merry gentlemen, I saw three shops, we three kings and the rocking one - it makes me cry. Not carols but Christmas songs is dominick the Italian donkey as it’s such a catchy ear worm and my dd loves it

deplorabelle · 11/12/2023 13:17

I can't pick a favourite but I quite fancy a woodland carol service featuring

Cherry tree carol
Linden tree carol
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Sans Day carol
Holly and the Ivy

Any more? (Don't say Coven-tree carol 😁😁)

Fluffyc1ouds · 11/12/2023 13:44

O Come All Ye Faithful and We Three Kings are my favourites.

After reading this thread I've decided I'll be listening to (and singing along to) Christmas carols on my drive home later.

And thanks for the little childhood flashback @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER! I loved Calypso Carol when I was in the school choir and completely forgot about it.

londonmummy1966 · 11/12/2023 16:27

I realise just a typo but @Brody77 's "I saw three shops" made me smile - at the moment I'd be delighted never to see the inside of a shop again....

ElizabethVonArnim · 11/12/2023 16:46

God rest ye merry gentlemen and Good King Wenceslas

Least favourites are the Carol of the Bells and the Coventry Carol

The Wild Wood carol, by John Rutter, is lovely!

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 11/12/2023 18:09

Cicha noc / silent night

O tannenbaum / oh Christmas tree

The Holly and the ivy

Oh little town of Bethlehem

Hark the herald angels sing

Ding dong merrily on high

Ángels we have heard on high

Once in royal David city

Away in a manger

Oh come oh ye faithful

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 11/12/2023 18:11
